Richard Socarides, former president of Equality Matters and former LGBT adviser to President Clinton, analyzes yesterday’s Mike Huckabee–sponsored Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day with “Viewpoint” host Eliot Spitzer.
Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, called on people to show their support for the fast food chain after it came under fire from gay rights activists, who have taken issue with Chick-fil-A’s treatment of its LGBT employees as well as the controversial comments made by Dan Cathy, Chick-fil-A’s president, against gay marriage.
“I think no company wants to be on either side, this dramatically, of the cultural wars,” Socarides says. “Even if it’s just a 50/50 proposition, no company wants to offend this much of the population.”
Socarides and Spitzer then move on to the news that the Democratic Party will embrace same-sex marriage as part of its platform. “It’s a very big moment, a real milestone,” Socarides says.
