Political reporter Joe Williams and Dan Gross, global business editor for Newsweek/The Daily Beast, analyze the impact of today’s jobs report on the election with “Viewpoint” host Eliot Spitzer. The country added 96,000 new jobs in August, the Labor Department reported Friday. But, as Spitzer points out, the country needs 200,000 to 250,000 new jobs a month “to have a real recovery.”
Gross quotes Paul Ryan, who told CNBC Friday morning, “This is not what recovery looks like.”
“Obama’s narrative seems to be, ‘We lost a ton of jobs, we’ve started to get them back, and if we just let the economy grow and kind of avoid disasters … we’ll get those jobs back,’” Gross says. “The reality is we’ll get some of them back, but without changes in policy — more infrastructure spending, changes at the Fed, better stimulus, helping the states so they don’t keep firing people — they need to do more of that to get more job growth.”
