Eliot Spitzer challenges the use of legal memos to thwart justice, role of lawyers as ‘facilitators’

“Viewpoint” host Eliot Spitzer cites Jose Rodriguez, retired from the CIA, and John Yoo, professor at UC Berkeley School of Law and formerly of the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, and their involvement with legal issues related to U.S. use of torture as an example to criticize how legal memos that establish a paper trail are allowing lawyers to work as “facilitators” to protect their clients from punishment. “Letting people who commit torture and fraud off the hook isn’t what our law is supposed to be used for. It’s time to put laws — as they were intended — back on the side of justice,” says Spitzer.
