John Rosenthal, co-founder of Stop Handgun Violence and Common Sense About Kids and Guns, and Aurora shooting survivor and gun control advocate Stephen Barton join John Fugelsang on “Viewpoint” to continue the gun control conversation. Details of legislation under consideration have started to emerge from the task force led by Vice President Joe Biden, which was established to examine gun violence in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School last month.
“The NRA has literally bought and sold Congress. They own the Republican Party, they’ve intimidated the Democrats into submission,” says Rosenthal. “And although I think [Vice President Biden’s] initiatives are just common sense, the Democrats in the House are going to run scared and the Republicans are not going to allow any meaningful legislation to pass.” He points out that since Newtown, 540 Americans have died from gun violence and says, “It’s not going to stop until the public realizes that their Congress is more concerned about their jobs than the 20 innocent children killed at Newtown and the 3,000 kids killed every year from gun violence.”
