Iranian satirist Saman Arbabi on how comedy is perceived in the Middle East

Iranian satirist, award-winning international journalist and Voice of America broadcaster Saman Arbabi joins Current TV’s John Fugelsang to discuss news that political satirist Bassem Youssef is out on bail. Egyptian authorities issued an arrest warrant for Youssef, who is often described as Egypt’s answer to Jon Stewart, alleging that he was guilty of insulting Islam and Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

Arbabi, who is based in Washington, D.C., suggests that he might face severe scrutiny if he were to return to his home country. “If I went back to Iran, they would probably catch me immediately at the airport and execute me on the spot because the mullahs don’t really like me over there,” Arbabi says. “They’re not really fond of humor.”
