Proposed GOP attack ad proves Republicans know they have an Obama popularity problem

Jim Rutenberg, national political correspondent for The New York Times, tells “Viewpoint” host Eliot Spitzer about the article he co-authored that reveals a leaked plan for a GOP super PAC ad campaign designed to attack President Barack Obama. Billionaire Joe Ricketts commissioned the proposal, which emphasized Obama’s ties to Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright, but has denied that he supports the politics it represents.

Rutenberg highlights the GOP dilemma that underpins the proposed ad campaign: “What stuck out to me the most was this challenge that the Republicans acknowledge they have and the Romney campaign agrees with: that the independent voters still like Barack Obama, and how do you grapple with that because they don’t feel good about where the country’s going?”
