‘The victim got justice’: Zerlina Maxwell weighs in on Steubenville rape trial verdict

Zerlina Maxwell, political analyst and EBONY.com contributor, joins Current TV’s John Fugelsang to share her perspective on the outcome of the Steubenville, Ohio, rape trial in which two high school football players were found guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl. Maxwell also weighs in on the controversy surrounding CNN’s coverage of the story.

“What we should have been talking about the whole time was that the victim got justice,” Maxwell says. “This is one of the 3 percent of cases that the victim actually gets a conviction on a rape charge.”

Maxwell reflects on her own experience to consider how society and the media can better address the issue of rape: “I identify as a survivor. Sometimes I use the word ‘victim’ in my writing, depending upon the context, but I think that it’s empowering to call yourself a survivor because you’re overcoming something so horrific.”
