Glenn Greenwald, Salon contributing writer and author of “With Liberty and Justice for Some,” tells “Viewpoint” host Eliot Spitzer how the political and financial elite have managed to defy accountability and rise above the law.
“We’ve created this mindset where we expressly repudiate the idea of the rule of law. We have a whole series of arguments now about why if you’re sufficiently important or prominent or instrumental to the functioning of the country, it’s better for the country to simply move beyond your crimes and not hold you accountable,” Greenwald says. “That was the argument Gerald Ford made to justify the pardon of Nixon, it’s what now gets hauled out every time we go to immunize elites, whether it’s the Iran-Contra scandal, the Bush crimes [or] Wall Street.”
