Zac Sunderland, 17, returned home to southern California yesterday after becoming the youngest person to sail around the world alone on his 36-foot sailboat, Intrepid.

The 27,500 mile voyage wasn't easy. Zac encountered pirates off the coast of Indonesia and had to deal with severe storms.

"It's interesting just thinking back to the different places in the world because I have so many friends in different parts of the world that are like family, you know, and all these different experiences," he said. "It's an amazing year. It seems like yesterday that I was here but in other ways it seems like a hundred years."

    • Heck, I been on 3 Great lakes freighters (there's a reason why they call the Great Lakes the "Inland Seas") To my knowledge, no freighter has sunk in the Great Lakes since the Edmund Fitzgerald took a nosedive to the bottom in '77. I've been on 3 Navy ships as well, in some pretty rough seas- but to do it in a little boat all by yourself, trying to avoid all the major shipping lanes AND pirates? No thanks.......I don't mind being on a ship at all, but it's nice to be able to see some land once in a while.
