When 33-stone Viking enthusiast Tim Barnacle got too heavy for his longboat he knew it was time to take action.
Now Tim, 47, has shed almost 10 stone since February 2008 so he can take to the water on his replica Nordic boat without fear of it capsizing.
Tim originally purchased his boat back in 2000 but his weight continued to rise, making his his past-time harder to pursue. The keen sailor and Viking and Tudor re-enactor, who lives in Hesketh Bank, said: "I was too heavy so it wouldn't have been safe. I couldn't manoeuvre around.
Tim, who has visited Norway, says he has been interested in Vikings and their crafts for years. He said: "You can't believe the skill involved. I like interpreting history to the public. "Being out on a battlefield and pretending you're dying horribly. It's all part of history."
This is definitely one of the weirder reasons to lose weight, can you think of any more?
