Lagerfeld: Curvy women should stay off the catwalk

"No one wants to see curvy women", Karl Lagerfeld has stated in response to a leading German women's magazine's ban on ultra thin models. He goes on: "You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly."

He claims fashion is about "dreams and illusions", calling the size zero debate absurd, implying that consumers and readers have no need to identify with what they see on catwalks and in magazines, just to appreciate the aesthetic.

Thoughts?

    • Even though Lagerfeld does often suffer from word vomit, I have to agree with him to a certain extent. There is a difference between curvy and fat. Lagerfeld loves Lara Stone, and even though she is really skinny she's curvy compared to the rest of the top models (i.e. Raquel Zimmerman, Freja Beha Eriksson, Eniko Mihalik etc.). Then again, plus size models are still a fringe element in the fashion industry because let's face it, they don't fit into the sample sizes. Mainstream designers aren't going to make size 8-12 samples. Hell, they won't even make a size 6.

    • The size zero debate is a controversial one. Fashionistas carefully dance around the issue, magazine editors blame the designers, designers blame the model agencies...it's a much-talked about paradox but, I have to say, I'm happy to see Lagerfeld telling it like it is. Why can't we, as readers and consumers, stop comparing ourselves to the catwalk models and just appreciate the aesthetic? Because let's face it, at the end of the day, the models with the biggest pulling power are likely to be those with the smallest waistlines.
