Public shame instead of jail time for thieves in Pa

A woman and her adult daughter in Pennsylvania have struck an agreement with the local authorities that will allow them to avoid jail time for swiping a gift card from a nine year old (on her birthday, no less), if they stood outside the courthouse holding signs proclaiming to the community what they had done.

It's like they've brought back stocks, but adapted them so they fit in with health and safety. Genius.
