South African paraglider Cyril Mazibuko got his start in the sport at the age of 12, building homemade wings from plastic bags and rope. Amazingly, his do-it-yourself wings worked -- to a point.

But after other paragliders saw his efforts, they took him under their tutelage, got him a commercial (and safer) wing, and taught him to fly. Now, after more than a decade in and out of the sport, Mazibuko is returning to paragliding as an instructor.
