Bonds would skip Hall of Fame induction

Barry Bonds would boycott Cooperstown if the Hall of Fame displays his record-breaking home run ball with an asterisk.

That includes skipping his potential induction ceremony.

"I won't go. I won't be part of it," Bonds said in an interview with MSNBC that aired Thursday night. "You can call me, but I won't be there."

The ball Bonds hit for home run No. 756 this season will be branded with an asterisk and sent to the Hall. Fashion designer Marc Ecko bought the ball in an online auction and set up a Web site for fans to vote on its fate. In late September, he announced fans voted to send the ball to Cooperstown with an asterisk.

Of course, the asterisk suggests Bonds' record is tainted by alleged steroid use.

    • Couple questions:

      - How can Bonds prove his innocence?

      - If you look back in baseball history, there was a strong movement to apply an asterisk to Maris' record since he broke it a longer season (the season was shorter when Ruth set it), Rightfully, that sorted itself out and there is no asterisk. Why would it suddenly be acceptable to start tagging records with asterisks?

    • We aren't talking about Bonds getting in to the Hall here. We are talking about the Ball being taken in. My favorite quote from his Olberman appearance which aires tonight and tomorrow was this
“You cannot give people the freedom, the right to alter history, you can’t do it,” Bonds said in the interview. “There’s no such thing as an asterisk in baseball.”
      WRONG AND WRONG. SIR!

    • I'm glad Barry was the first to utter such a suggestion. I think a lot of people should boycott his induction on the obvious charges of illegal doping. We could all be saved the pain of a ceremony if Bonds would prove that he is not guilty .. which wouldn't happen and as a consequence prove that he is guilty. Thus, he would never make it into the hall. Then, we could all be spared his trite indictment of a hall that celebrates 'legal' starts of the game. Bonds is a suckerfish and just another reason that the sport of baseball has taken a major nose dive.

    • I agree with him yet think he's full of it. The Hall of Fame displaying a branded ball is a travesty, but I don't think there's any way Barry doesn't attend his enshrinement. My guess is he takes the opportunity to deliver a grandiose "eff you" speech as only Barry can.
