These girls may look young and harmless but underneath their teenage skin is a passion for shooting guns. Take a look at the emerging scene of young female gun enthusiasts that are changing the face of a predominantly male dominated sport.

This pod is a cut-down of the feature length documentary "A Girl and A Gun, " directed by Cathryne Czubek.

    • I am very happy to see that these girls are able to follow their passions and not caved to sterotypes. I am happier to see that they are being taught responsibly and in controlled surroundings.

    • Excellent post. My dad taught me how to use a gun when I was just a child. And I am very accurate with one. There would be a lot less accidents with guns if people were taught the basics young. Rule number one: NEVER point a gun at someone unless you are truly willing to shoot them. (That is if your life is in danger.)

    • I just got into shooting this year. Lots of fun and very rewarding. Please don't allow your state to sway one of your basic Constitutional Rights. Fight for it.

    • This is a great pod- I love to see documentary films coming to Current- what a great combination! But besides that, growing up in a gun-friendly family but living in a gun-phobic city I love to see this angle- guns as sport- shown in an honest way. And being shot by girls, no less. I'm sure plenty of people will find this pod disarming to say the least.

    • Wow, it was really amazing to see how passionate these girls are about shooting! This pod shows the general public that guns aren't just weapons, and more importantly, they aren't just for guys.

    • Impressive, the girl stroking her "1st boyfriend" (about and $8000 perazzi MX8 shotgun) was shown shooting International Skeet. International Skeet is arguably one of the MOST difficult shooting disciplines, you don't have to call it a sport if you don't want to but you have about 3 seconds to hit 2 targets flying at about 65 mph from a low gun position. Rigorous work out, not really but it does require a helluva lot of hand eye coordination and concentration. Good on these kiddos for learning how to handle firearms responsibly!

    • My wife loves the shooting sports almost as much as I do, and I’m sure my daughter will enjoy the shooting sports when she’s a bit older as well. The shooting sports are a lot of fun, and can be enjoyed by both girls & boys. It’s an equal opportunity sport. :)

    • i love this pod! and i can't wait till i get to see the feature length.

It seems like a lot of young girls and women who have eating disorders do so because of some issue with control in their life, and their body is the most tangible thing to them, and it seems powerful that these girls (like most girls in sports, probably) are able to find a way to break free of that. I've never been a big fan of guns, but maybe I can rethink a gun's use and purpose.

    • I enjoy watching current but I was really bothered by the sexist way this pod was introduced. I find it inappropriate to introduce female target shooting as 'totally disturbing phenomena.' If this pod was about men at a shooting range I don't think it would have been introduced the same way. I don't think current should support sexist comments, period.

I've never shot a gun before, but I would not pass up a chance to learn any skill. Shooting is a skill and a women shooting is no different. None of the women talked about using their skills outside of a shooting range.

I'm a totally non-violent woman, but after viewing this pod I plan to visit my local shooting range to learn something new.

Why is the idea of a women shooting so different than a man?

    • I went to the Biltmore Estate in NC for Thanksgiving in 2007 and went skeet shooting for the first time. I shot a 20 gauge automatic shotgun, and I actually really impressed the guide that took us out. I found out Im left eye dominant and I happen to be really good at it. I would love to go again. I wasn't aware they had shooting teams! I think that's pretty awesome.

    • I'm not really impressed, I've seen 10 year olds shoot machine guns before, and a monkey shoot a pellet gun on youtube. Guns are made to be simplistic, it's endowed by their purpose. As for the women who use firearms, that's great, more power to ya', just don't be surprised if guys are reluctant to date you. =)

    • Quite honestly, I believe it is ridiculous how they humanize these guns. This just shows me how unoticably people can manipulate guns into an average "toy." Shooting a gun should only be used as a weapon and should NOT be offered to these young girls as a simple hobby. What is this showing youth? It's so obvious that we just don't see the extremeties a gun can hold. We go off selling toy guns, paintball guns, BB guns, pop pistols, video games and so on. Sure these are reasonably harmless now, but the whole picture this is giving these kids. The child brain physically cannot function to debate things that people around them make seem so safe and just normal. So by brainwashing our youth with these generalized weopons, we are creating a violent future.

On the other hand, I think it's great that people are now attempting to expose girls to things that are commonly not thought of as a "girly" thing to do. With all the categorizing of the sexes, it's nice to chip at the wall. I wish that these things were better thought out by it's advertisers. There is ignorance shadowing any beneficial intentions and I think it's time to take a look at what is stimulating the millions of minds that so eagerly tune into the TV.

    • This is a well-constructed, beautifully shot, and fascinating piece. The selections from the interviews were insightful and poignant; especially the moments of reflection we catch from Emily, the 18-year old world champion skeet shooter. I can't wait to see the feature-length version.

    • I've come to the understanding that a gun is a tool.

I've used guns personally, and I've never had such feelings before as expressed in the video. I can see where you're coming from, (apparently you know these girls personally?) but understand this:

What I wonder about when I look at the video, is not, "Oh my God, how is she so obsessed with her gun?"

but rather, "Is she more into the skill of shooting and sport, or the powertrip that comes with using a tool that is powerful and destructive by design?"
and it's obvious that she enjoys the "bad ass"comments that the macho image of her with a gun invokes among her peers, which means she happily accepts their view.

      *shrugs*

oh! and as for, " The last thing girls like these would ever consider, is using their guns for anything other than their sport "....

    • I'm a little concerned that mjd4evr is so upset over what a teenage girl thinks about her gun. Lighten up. You obviously have no idea what competitive shooting is about. The last thing girls like these would ever consider, is using their guns for anything other than their sport. Out of ignorance, their friends may have the wrong ideas about what makes someome a bad ass but these girls don't.

    • I'm just upset at the way she was stroking that gun (her first boyfriend!)and the way the young lady was describing the way the gun helps her release "her power" within herself..you don't need a gun for that. she also seemed quite proud of the comments on the pics "don't mess with her..or else" or something along those lines..I wouldn't want that image presented about me even if I was a bad ass.

those actions send up red flags in my mind, like the ol' possible school shooter if she has a mental breakdown...flag.

    • Shooting is a sport because you must control your breathing and heart rate to do well. I look forward to seeing the movie since I enjoy seeing media which shows women doing sports as women and athletes.

    • It's nice how activities like this don't just have to be for boys. It was amusing though how they keep saying the words "sport" and "athlete". I imagine that it's difficult to develop the skill to be a sharpshooter, but like golf, racecar driving, bar darts, poker, if you could smoke while doing it, it's not a sport. But don't smoke, it's legal suicide.

    • I think more girls and women should learn how to use a gun..Especially with the way things are nowadays..More power to any woman who takes the initiative to learn something that most people feel they shouldnt..
