Championship footballer Al Bangura is to be allowed to stay in the UK, the Home Office announced last night. He was facing deportation back to Sierra Leone after his appeal for asylum was rejected. Bangura, 19, who became a father last month, had made a tearful appearance before fans at Watford's Vicarage Road ground, prompting supporters of Watford and Claire Ward, the Labour MP for the town, to conduct a campaign to persuade the authorities to let him stay.

    • This is such cool news. I read about the guy in an article in the Guardian's Weekend magazine in mid December and I've been following what's happening to him ever since.

The guy's a great influence on young people, he's got a really positive role in this country and contributes thousands every year in tax (nice to see a story on immigration in the media that doesn't have the usual 'scrounger' angle) and I'm really pleased he's staying.

Last year his team's fans showed their support at half time. It's amazing to watch. Click the thumbnail on the right to see it (excuse the low quality) or click the link below to read the Guardian's piece about him.
