You could liken it to all of those old Lacoste shirts that your dad says he would have kept if he had known they would be so cool today. "Fixies," or "fixed-gear" bicycles are making a comeback, and people everywhere are trading in their 18-speeds for one gear and - in most cases - no brakes.
At least your father remembers being able to stop. Maybe he'd feel more comfortable if you stuck to the Lacoste shirts.
