According to Alabama police, Mrs. Pritchett seduced and had sex with 8 boys on the Chalkville High School baseball team. So far, she's only been charged with two counts of sodomy (some of the boys she boinked were over the age of consent) and faces up to 20 years in prison.

OMG all the idiots who think these boys feel traumatized r crazy. I agree with the person who said it's insane to give her 20 years more time than some violent felonies. These boys were NOT raped. They weren't forced into anything and r probably happy and laughing about it right now. Also it was a high school students and NOT her students not that it makes it O.K. but that shld be taken into acct. Physically 17 yr olds look more like men than boys. Also there's something wrong with our culture when it comes to this TRAUMATIZE bullshit! People r much more resiliant than we want to believe. I mean society talks people into believing things r a bigger deal than they really are. It's sort of like when a kid falls and cuts his knee if u get hysterical and make a big deal about it he will cry. If u act like O.K. your alright get over it they won't cry or get as emotional. Our society makes a big mellow dramatic thing about everything so alot of people act overemotional. These boys definately will not be traumatized I know a 36 year old guy who had sex at 13 with a 20 year old baby sitter and has a smile on his face when he told the story he was happy it happened.

Sexual issues are so different from economic or environmental issues. The ethics that needs to be applied in one not necessary needs to be taken in consideration in the other. According with the Law, she is wrong! According with passion, sexual desire and natural physical needs she's right. You pick which one you want and think it is right. Let's all put this hypothetical scene where she have been approached by the students wanting a better explanation for their sexual issues. She goes ahead and give them the best sexual lecture and practice class they could ever had. So there you have, she still a good teacher! To some viewers, the best! Nothing was forced, no one used violence and nothing wrong happened. Shall we end the story here? Otherwise we can go on on a loop again where she is going to be found guild by breaking the US rules and ta da da, da, da. Just like the Canadian Law, girls and boys should be considerate responsible for their act at 14 years old. That seems kind of reasonable if we are going to respect humans for what they are sexually. Therefore US Law should grow up a little on its interpretation. I am hearing these voices in my head: "Oh, No! It might take a life time to teach a monkey how to speak! I am not sure if in the end is worth the trouble as the poor fellow will never vocally formulate an intelligible sentence."

Unless the parent homeschooling is abusive, controlling and demanding.
Homeschooling has been shown to have no major difference (socially) between those that are in school from the grade of K-8th grade. But at the High School level there is a difference, one that homeschooling parents cannot compensate for.
One that I'm sure they would be complete understanding with the Amish as in their children want to taste what they have not and that is the life of a public school student or someone that isn't around their parents 24/7.

Here we go again. It’s immoral, illegal (in most states) & definitely gets lopsided “way to go!” attention when the teacher is a woman who offers her male students a more complete education. But there comes a time when boys put their GI Joes down & look for something else to play with. Where were these teachers when I was growing up? Oh yeah, I went to Catholic school where I was assured I was destined for eternal damnation if I so much as had a dirty thought, yet I somehow couldn’t wait to have one. And I sure as hell stayed away from the priests, they always had bad breath. Anyhow, I hope the kids are OK & don’t need add’l counseling as they were special-ed students who played on the baseball team. Who knows, maybe this is just what they needed to get jump started in life or at least raise their batting average & move the team up in the standings.

Apparently they found her attractive or they wouldn't have had sex with her. They were on the baseball team...jocks found her attractive enough to have sex with her and then brag about it.
In Canada the age of consent is 14. I'm sure there is some sort of stipulation that would make it wrong for a teacher or someone in authority taking advantage, but I can't seem to get past the idea of the difference in age of consent from country to country and then become gun-ho about her being naughty for breaking US law.
What really has she done wrong? She cheated on her husband and she slept with more than one person within a span of time at their parent's home or at the school.
I think she's disgusting.
But really what has she done wrong? Morally people can jump on her and morally they have that right. Legally it's a little more iffy. If I were on the jury I couldn't see charging her with a crime that would have her spending an extensive amount in time in jail.
What she did was what a teenage whore would do and what the boys did is what stupid, idiotic losers who can't control themselves would do. And as dumb as the combo is they harmed who? Those that heard the tales? The parents ignorance for not knowing how much their child was into getting sex? Who was harmed?
No one.
Therefore whatever punishment they have for her via the legal system will not fit the crime that I'm not so sure she committed.

In reply to the people confused about the sodomy counts, keep in mind that the legal definition of sodomy is different than what we immediately guess it would be.
In reply to the people critiquing her appearance...the woman slept with underaged boys and all you can think of to criticize is her looks? Seriously?

Even if the woman didnt force them to do it, it is still illegal. I just find it unfair. If a boy has sex with a teacher, then it's practically ok! But if a girl did the same with a male teacher, then he's defamed.

When we are taking about Sexuality and the Law it is already too late to formulate any argument. She as a teacher as you mentioned did act on an unethical manner. However, to say that she raped those boys and they will be in emotional humiliation, in my views it is just going too far. You are practically creating the psychological problem by describing the issue according with your views. For them it was just having sex with a women in which they had some physical gratification in the end. Now if You start telling them that this is or was rape, then you are practically creating the sickness in their minds that did not exit.
However this is all speculation right? In addition to that we were not there neither in her shoes.

Cases like this are not the heinous types of cases that most rapes are...making it hard for some individuals to even consider it a rape.
I agree that no one was "forced" into anything, but for a grown adult to take advantage of a bunch of horny kids that won't likely say no is irresponsible, to put it mildly. The teens in the situation lack the foresight to see that getting it on with the teacher is not going to help them in the long run. Perhaps the term "child abuse" is what I'm looking for here.
With teens, the thought process often is more geared towards going for whatever feels good. Any teacher that takes advantage of that fact is still committing rape---maybe not in the traditional sense, but in a very real psychological sense. In the end, after the fact, when authorities find out, and the rumors start to fly in the school halls about who did it, then the students that were involved are prone to experiencing at least something similar to the type of emotional humiliation and degradation that goes with rape.

Young men have no idea about sexual maturity or responsibility. Of course those boys were molested or raped. Only in a macho-male (white-male) dominated society do folks want to pat the boys on the back and say hoorah as if they should be lucky or as if they achieved something.
Those boys will most likely experience dysfunctional relationships and greatly misunderstand the potentiality of sex and love.... SAD (standard American dialogue).Buk!

That probably means she had anal sex with two of her students. You guys know that and are just fooling around right? Sexual issues are very complicated to talk about here or even to put it in the news as very few people have the qualifications to analyze it. What most people know is the restriction about it. Think about for a moment? You all know that young people look hot and sexy and practically are bursting in flames all around. They do not have the control we develop over the Years. Now many teachers are also sexy and sometimes these things happen. Picking up a Teacher and public crucifying him or her will not resolve the issue but only impose more fear and create more sickness. This issue is not that simplistic as you all are attempting to comment here.

I know that sometimes we all need some distraction but try to use defenseless people that we do not know the details of the issue, specially on sexuality, it becomes very unfair to humans. It is all speculation, unfair judgement and fear! Oh yes we need to impose more fear in the population in regards to sexuality. More fear! It is good for you! You will become more sick, mentally castrated and food for psychologists. Sorry, I cannot help but act on sarcasm here! If you only knew the real truth about being human...
Ps: I got this wonderful book about human sexuality from 1971. You know, before our society became so sick and more misinformed about it. It is a great book with nice photos and good content that takes the issue from A to Z exploring and talking things in the light of the day without any unfair discrimination to anyone.

well-spoken stopnoise "feeding frenzy" is the perfect term to describe the big media "discussions". Hiring analysts to pass judgement on things they dont always know the facts of is what our media lives on.

I think issues like that should not be in the news but on the hands of very qualified professionals. When it gets thrown in the news, it becomes a feeding frenzy to a group of robotic people living in America that thinks no one needs sex. Their thinking is that Teachers should be asexuals. You will be very surprised to find out how much misinformation, bashing and absurd thinking goes behind sexual issues.

No one is asking anyone to be asexual. However, a little bit of ethics and self control are nice. The question of whether or not a teacher should sleep with his/her teen students is a more severe version of should a boss sleep with his/ her employees? These are minors, however. Even though they might have been willing participants, they more than likely lack the maturity to recognize when they are making a bad decison. The adult in this case was taking advantage of their naive nature.

Hey guys, chill out with the teacher BS. She was a FORMER special-ed MIDDLE SCHOOL teacher. She had sex with kids in high school. She eyed them and went after them, it's not school related at all.
Personally, I really think stuff like this is totally absurd. Up to twenty years for underage sex? You couldn't get that for armed robbery or assault. Hell, you wouldn't get that much for two rapes. Shows you where the priorities are. They weren't even that far from the age of consent. And why is it sodomy and not statuatory rape? The word sodomy in law makes me very uncomfortable.
In any case, I'm sure the school kids are doing hive-fives all arou...*ahem* I mean are terribly traumatized for life. >.>

i feel like the age of consent is a little bunk. a lot of people who are 15,16,17 are smart enough and wise enough to make decisions for themselves.
obviously this is an extreme case, and the student/teacher relationship is a little ethically off because of the power dynamic, but i think the way people are going about have a discussion about this is far from intelligent, talking about the way she looks and all.

I think with lots of teachers-- especially younger teachers who are new to the profession-- you won't be able to tell if someone is likely to do something like this. You just have to interview them, see if they pass the "not crazy" test, and trust them with the job until they prove they can't be trusted.
But what you *can* do is keep your ear to the ground on gossip (we had teachers involved in improper relationships with students at my high school and all you had to do was listen to five minutes of gossip and you'd know all about it), have evaluations, enforce stricter behavior standards (ie. no teachers and students alone in a room with the door closed, etc.).
You can't just try to hold students accountable for their actions. You have to hold the teachers accountable, too. Especially since they're the ones the students are being told they can trust. The higher up your position of authority when it comes to being a trusted figure for kids, the more stringent the standards you're asked to live by should be.
