Chelsea captain Terry was sent off with 13 minutes remaining on Saturday
Chelsea captain John Terry has been cleared to play against Manchester United on Sunday after his appeal against a red card proved successful.
Terry was sent off for a foul on Manchester City striker Jo, but a Football Association hearing upheld Chelsea's claim of wrongful dismissal. He received a straight red from Mark Halsey, with the referee deeming the incident to be serious foul play.
The England skipper had been set to miss three games.
Had the ban been enforced, Terry would have missed Sunday's crucial Premier League clash with champions United, as well as the Carling Cup tie against Portsmouth on 24 September and the league encounter with Stoke three days later.
The foul on Jo occurred inside the centre circle, with Terry's centre-back partner Ricardo Carvalho covering the play and full-back Jose Bosingwa also sprinting back to defend.
But Halsey's decision to issue a red card for serious foul play rather than a professional foul meant the position on the pitch and the presence of other players were not relevant. Serious foul play is classed as when a player "uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when challenging for the ball when it is play".

I hate when the FA legislates from the bench! Yes Terry may feel that he was wrongly carded, but come on he cant count all the times he has gotten away clean or was given the advantage with decisions that went in his favor. Calls on the pitch, over the long run, eventually even out! Some days you lose some, others you win! To have the FA dictate any and every play on the field ruins the game.

Man City I don't believe will become the #1 team. As for Ref's having the final say, that is a complete joke. Appealing gives the team the opportunity to try to correct the Idotic decisions of the refs. Plus there is too much money involved through sponsorship nowadays where Red Cards and disallowed Goals must be corrected. Technology probably will have be introduced sometime.

Halsey seems to make a lot of bad decisions in chelsea matches....glad to see justice served. as for man city - they'll be lucky to grab the last euro spot.
and its called football, because you play with your feet.

Nice one; Chelsea against Man U is still the best match up in the Premier league, but I think Man City are about to become the top English side in blue.

This will open up the flood gates to all sorts of appeals against poor decisions. It will mean that the case for a video ref grows ever stronger...

It's rubbish, the refs word should be final. All this backtracking and appeals just spoil it in my opinion.
Plus, I can't stand Chelsea. :D

Just heard Mark Halsey has been punished! He has been put in charge of the high noon clash between Chester and Shrewsbury in Coca-Cola League Two! HAHAHA!

Players on the continent and the world over have been masters of the cynical foul for years. Though it goes against the British tradition of fairplay i happen to think there is a time and a place for it in football. It has happened to England on numerous occasions and England players have failed to do it on numerous occasions. In this instance i don't see there was any need but in the future... maybe an England WC Quarter final when Christiano Ronaldo is through in the last minute we'll be glad to see a JT rugby tackle taking one for the team.

Carvalho would have made it back and the distance to goal was way to big for a sending off. Don't get me wrong, Terry himself knew he was gonna get a card but I think the red was harsh.
Vidic on the other hand deserved a red.

Justice has been served. Should never of been sent off in the first place.

I think that is only fair, I watched the game and it seemed like a pretty poor decision, he was almost in the opposition half!
It was particularly key when you consider Vidic's tackle on Robbie Keane in the Liverpool game.

True, but it was blatant cheating. If a player dives in the box (or anywhere for that matter) people are very quick to criticise. With this challenge, where Terry had clearly been beaten, Terry just hauled Jo down yet all anyone does is defend Terry, I don't think it was a sending off either but it was cheating all the same.

Beta_Boy:
It was a sending off, he was the last man and he didn't even try to disguise the foul. It would have been a great tackle in a game of Rugby. I'm quite surprised that they have rescinded his ban.
I bet Sir Alex has a great big anti-Man-U-conspiracy moan about this one.
