Five-time European champions Liverpool sent a warning to the rest of the continent with a 3-1 win at PSV Eindhoven which saw them top their Champions League group.
They had already qualified for the next stage before last night’s final group stage matches, but the win, coupled with Atletico Madrid’s 0-0 draw with Marseille, will see them among the top seeds for the second round.
Elsewhere, Michael Ballack’s Chelsea side confirmed their place in the knock-out stages following a nervy campaign with a 2-1 win over CFR Cluj. The Romanian minnows finished bottom of the group despite an impressive opening win at Roma.
The Italians recovered from that defeat to qualify by beating Bordeaux 2-0.
Werder Bremen claimed the UEFA Cup spot in Group B with a 2-1 win over giants Inter Milan, coupled with Anorthosis Famagusta losing 1-0 to Panithanaikos. That result saw the Greek team top the group ahead of Jose Mourinho's Inter.
