Police in Brazil are investigating the death of former world boxing champion Arturo Gatti.
Gatti, who was raised in Montreal, was discovered dead in an apartment in Porto de Galinhas — a seaside resort community — in northeastern Brazil.
According to numerous reports, foul play is suspected. Gatti’s blood-stained body was found early Saturday morning. He was in Brazil on a second honeymoon with his wife.
Gatti was born in Italy but grew up in Montreal.
He was one of the most successful boxers in Canadian history — capturing both the United States Boxing Association junior lightweight title and International Boxing Federation’s world junior lightweight title in the mid 1990s.
Two years ago, Gatti retired from boxing. He was 37 years old.
