Who is Bar Karma's Mystery Band? (UPDATE!) Posted by Jim_Goldblum | Production Blog | FEBRUARY 17, 2011
UPDATE:
Congratulations to @laurenlush16 and @Itsbatman_Durr for discovering tonight's mystery band, 6BROOKS. And thank you to everyone who did an incredible job on this riddle! If you want to learn more about the band's upcoming EP "5 Smooth Stones," and download their single with Bella Boncat, "Slow It Down," head over to freethealtonido.com.
Please enjoy 6Brooks' music video:
And here is an explanation for the riddle:
The columns on a chess board are called files, the rows are sometimes called brooks. There are eight brooks on a standard board but a pawn begins the game on the second brook and only has to move six spaces forward to reach the end of the board. Once a pawn has moved six spaces, or "crossed six brooks", it can become anything it wants. It can even become a queen, the only chess piece more valuable than a rook. That is, once a pawn crosses six brooks, it can "trick rooks". In Through The Looking Glass the Red Queen tells Alice that, to become a queen, she has "to jump the first of six brooks," which she winds up doing as a pawn on the chessboard. Of course, a brook is also a stream, which is why she might be "wading on fish hooks" while she's jumping the brooks of the chessboard.
The "five smooth stones" is a reference to David and Goliath. When David is asked what he needs to fight Goliath, he asks for only five smooth stones. This brings us back to the original pawn metaphor. David needs five smooth stones to defeat Goliath and become royalty, just like a pawn needs six brooks to defeat a rook and become royalty.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
And they're here, with a video riddle - just for you. Solve the riddle, and you'll have the band name.
The first two Current TV Creation Studios community members to crack the riddle and discover the band's name AND POST A LINK TO THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE IN THE COMMENTS get some Bar Karma swag. So what are you waiting for? Solve the riddle, get some stuff. Have at it. We'll announce the winners and have a nice surprise right before the episode airs!
Some of you asked about Bar Karma's mystery band whose song was over the closing credits of the first episode. Well, you're in luck, because our mystery band is BACK with more music in episode 102 which premieres Friday, February 18 at 10/9c on Current TV.

Nice job on figuring that one out! You are awesome!
Also very interesting puzzle. If we can keep little things like this coming, I think we will get some really good interest on the site and dug into the community development part of it. Sometimes I know I forget the huge amount of fun all of this is.

ok thinking out loud time lol maybe itll trip something in someone elses thoughts
Two pawns in a position to trick rooks........alice and the rabbit maybe, fooling the guards
Eyes focused right on the battle, with fixed looks... on duty or something, like queens guards
Ask Alice when she jumped, if she waded on fish hooks.......bait? worms?
Like the Red Queen Babbled in Alice's Big Books.......gobbledygook? or just another alice referance?
Turns out she hid five smooth stones in mixed nooks........david picked 5 smooth stones to get goliath, alice toppled the queen so to speak.. grrr

I am completely, entirely, and thoroughly exhausted on this subject. So, guess I'll just have to wait and see who won. I've researched every band suggested on the comments page. The name doesn't seem to have any relation to Alice in Wonderland. It was simply a diversion on rhyme scheme.
Who knows.

The whole song is about Alice in Wonderland. The chess board was one of the more critical scenes of the book when Alice fought against the Jabberwocky. The White Kingdom (good) against the Red Kingdom (bad).
Two Pawns possibly symbolize the two rappers (White Kingdom), trying to trick the Rooks. I can assume this because Alice was one of the White Queen's pawns on the chess board.
Asking if Alice when she jumped if she waded on Fish hooks. Well, the Caterpillar would be the one more likely to ask this question. In the book, he was just called the Caterpillar. In Tim Buton's film he was called Absalom. The only guy who raps by the name of Absalom isn't as good as the rappers in our riddle; so moving on.
Like the Red Queen Babbled in Alice's Big Books. Well, she babbled about a lot of things. She claimed it was better to be feared than to be loved. She screamed Off with her head. Was easily upset. I believe the reference to Alice's Big Books is really just a reference to Lewis Carrol's book about Alice.
In a Alice in Wonderland miniseries (on SyFy), there were Stone's of Wonderland. Not sure what this would have to do with our two singers. I checked to see who did the music for the mini series. It was composed music by Ben Mink; so no relation to our band.
So . . . yeah. Just going in circles here. Maybe someone can take my analysis and figure it out.

This is probably going to sound like a ramble post, but whatever, maybe it will help somebody...
Alice had to cross six brooks to be crowned queen in Through the Looking Glass and started out as one of the White Queen's pawns.

Trying to find a group that fits the Rhyme scheme has been fun. Thing is, not many bands fit the scheme, and there aren't any Alice characters other than maybe Jabberwoky that fit the scheme.
Jabbawockeez (which is the closest I can find) is a dance group. I don't think they do any singing. So, still looking. Difficult though.

Probably Murda Mook and Wordsmith
Two Pawns, Two Rappers - Literature references - Rhyme pattern.
Which she go to rock with Murda Mook?Which she got to rock with (the next two words is the band name). So this is why I don't think its a name of a person, but of a group. Then again . . . its all a little too vague and it can be misconstrued.

Two pawns in a position to trick rooks........ it's obvious with the pawn and chess board on the screen. It's a chess game.
Eyes focused right on the battle, with fixed looks...........they are concentrating intesely on the game.
Ask Alice when she jumped, if she waded on fish hooks.......Alice in Wonderland? Waded as in going through water and captured by fish hooks? Can't understand this one so well.
Like the Red Queen Babbled in Alice's Big Books.......Off with their heads!!!!???
Turns out she hid five smooth stones in mixed nooks........Ann Fairbairn book?
I am thinking too much into it, probably the above doesn't mean anything.
