Got a question for Jonathan Frakes? Posted by NBargiel | Production Blog | MARCH 29, 2011

WE ARE CLOSED FOR QUESTIONS! Thanks for participating!

Several weeks back, Bar Karma creator, Will Wright started taking questions from the community. It’s been a fun and popular thread on our blog.

When our special guest director for next week’s episode, Jonathan Frakes – also known as Commander Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation – offered to answer questions from the community, we jumped at the chance.

So it’s time to submit your questions!

We will be taking questions in three places:

1. On the blog. This is the only post that we're taking questions in, so if you post it in the forums or commenting another blog post, we won't consider it. (This is that post, so ask away!)

2. On Twitter. Make sure to hashtag your question with #BarKarma. You can direct the question to @BarKarma if you want. But they MUST have the hashtag #BarKarma.

3. On our Facebook page. Make sure to like our Facebook page and look for the appropriate comment thread.

We close for questions on Friday, April 1 at 5PM(EST.)

The Bar Karma team and Jonathan will select questions.

Jonathan will answer them here on the blog on Thursday morning, April 7 before the premiere of episode 109 of Bar Karma, “Three Times a Lady.”

    • This isn't the first time you and Genie Francis have worked together professionally; however, is it the first time you were her Director?

I wondered if it was easier for both of you to work on the emotional aspects of representing someone with Dissociative Identity Disorder because of the strength of trust that is created in a 20+ year marriage.

Thank you both for your involvement in Bar Karma!

    • Mr. Frakes,

A few years ago you did a Vacation Bible School video (explorer theme or something like that). I was wondering if you might be willing to share your personal religious affiliation/belief and how much it influences the choices you make in your roles/projects.

Also, along that same line, in Star Trek: Generations, Riker tells Capt. Picard he plans on living forever--did that come from the script or did you ad lib it from your (if any) religious belief?

Thanks in advance for you response and keep up the great work both behind and in front of the camera!

    • Bar Karma is a new show developed in a new way. obviously the prod. crew is vastly experienced but , in my opinion you learn more from others than you learn from yourself - are there any suggestions or ideas you would like to pass on to production staff that may have occurred to you during your interaction with them.

    • Jonathan, I recall watching the TNG episode "Frame of Mind" it happened to be my favorite episode in which you were featured. How hard was it for you to get into the type of mentality necessary so that you could effectively portray someone who was crazy? Did the episode haunt you afterwards?

    • Long time passed since your first production at Liberty HS in Bethlehem, PA. Don't worry. Your secret is safe with me. Personally I enjoyed the ST:DS9 episodes you directed, as well as the movie Thunderbirds. What projects are you considering atm? A talented director such as yourself, we fans would love to know.

    • Hello Mr.Frakes,
Would you consider directing Star Trek XII if asked? You did a fantastic and I mean fantastic job on Star Trek First Contact,if JJ does not want to direct you should be the one to direct it.

    • Is the Star Trek Francise dead or will we see a new movie or series (maybe with you as Captain William Riker of the Titan)?

    • I just want to say that I love star trek TNG. I love all the messages and themes in the show. My question is, how are you and Commander Riker similar? How are you different? And how much were you involved in creating the character?

    • Mr. Frakes, as a consistant viewer of all the Star Trek series and spinoffs (though not a hard core fan ;-) and having liked most of what I saw; I was wondering if there were there any episodes you found "difficult" to act in, or perform in, either because of personal opinion, point of view, or dislike of the story line?
Being I am AS, I find myself feeling very "alien" many times and wondered if the problem ever comes up in acting situations.

    • I live in the land at the end of the Earth, I find it hard to keep up with what is going on.
What are you doing now? And... thank for choosing to go Alienways with the pitch.
I think we all need a bit more star trekky in our lifes... especially now, with more and more folk turning to wondering about UFO and questioning, if extra terrestial life does exsist elsewhere. Do you believe yourself that there is such a thing as ALIEN?

    • First I wish to just say Thank you...I was raised on Star Trek so you and everyone involved in Star Trek and TNG helped shape how I see our world and our future. Now that said, What is the most memorable behind the scenes moment you've had in your whole career? (Of course your wife would be the first! So the next after that.)
I asked the same question to John Delance(sp?) a few years back and he got a kick out of sharing his story (apparently he was quite the practical joker on the set of his soap) Oh and we would Love for you to return for our next season!

      Forever a Fan,
      Kate

    • The community here had some pretty energetic discussions about how Dissociative Identity Disorder might be depicted in the episode you directed. How much did you hear about these discussions, and what did you think about the problem of representing D.I.D, in a fair way while still making an entertaining show?

    • Where did you interest in science fiction come from? Do you know if Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction will be available on DVD anytime soon? I'm a huge fan of that show along with TNG.

I've heard that from so many other sites. It makes me think of Dark Angel, I suppose if you have a sci fi related show, the last place you want to go to is Fox.
