Scene 1 by Stingblade A young woman enters Bar Karma. She had decided that she wants an abortion and is offered a series of timelines. -
Scene 2 by bjspeperco the song "sunshine" by john denver begins too play as a young asian pregnant girl hurries into the bar and takes a seat in a small booth in the far corner of the bar -
Scene 3 by butterfield8 A Man and Woman duck into a bar from a cold snowy day but there is heat coming from them. The move to a dark corner by the fireplace. he pulls her close and looks into her eyes and slowly takes her coat off -- -
Scene 4 by butterfield8 she laughs and wipes snow from his shoulders, gets close and says "order me a bourbon baby, i want to freshen up". she gives him soft lingering kiss and he holds her face and looks into her eyes. "i love you katherine" she smiles and walks towards dayna and asks where the bathroom is -
Scene 5 by butterfield8 "apple martini?" doug asks while slicing apples into rings as jason approaches the bar. "i think we'll keep it simple, one bourbon & tonic on the rocks and a vodka soda please." "ive never noticed this bar before" jason says"but it is a perfect place out of that snow storm. its starting to come down hard." doug puts the drinks in front of jason. jason pulls his wallet out of the inside of his coat pocket and his wedding ring falls out on the bar and seems to spin forever on its end doug puts the drinks -
Scene 6 by butterfield8 "how long have you been married" doug asks. "9 years" jason says looking at the wedding ring spinning slower and almost done. a song comes on the jukebox...a blues song like "change it" by Stevie Ray Vaughn. Kathryn is by the jukebox moving her hips to the music and dances towards jason. she grabs her bourbon and smiles at him "dance with me" she asks. "come on baby, you know i dont dance" he smiles back. just then james comes out of his office door. "your loss" she says and dances over to james. James and kathryn dance as all look on. jason puts the wedding ring back inside his wallet -
Scene 7 by butterfield8 the song ends and everyone claps. kathryn thanks james for the dance and moves towards jason..."one more dance kathryn" james asks. she does a slight double take but is intrigued that he knows her name..."ok" she smiles "one more but i have a feeling if there is more than the one I will be in trouble." dayna is at the jukebox and pushes some buttons, a news slower song song starts. james pulls kathryn in closer. "you know you shouldnt be drinking" he says. "too early in the afternoon?" she asks cautiously. "too early in life" he replies. "I'm almost 40" she laughs. "not your life" james says. this jars kathryn but james holds onto her as they dance and she relaxes and feels safe. "i'm just late" she says as tears well up in her eyes. -
Scene 8 by butterfield8 dayna helps jason off with his coat. he just stares at kathryn with his wallet in his hand. "are those your kids" dayna asks refering to the pictures in his wallet. "yes" jason says "erik is 8 and maia is 5." "they are beautiful" dayna says hanging his coat. "i cant imagine my life without them" jason says turning back to his drink. "you have kids" jason asks doug. "no" doug admits "ive got to figure out my own life before i mess up anyone elses." "that's just it" jason says " your life isnt yours anymore, its all for the kids, what is best for them...which in the end is what is best for you...but its not always that easy." jason takes a long drink and looks at himself in the mirror -
Scene 9 by butterfield8 tears fall off kathryn's cheeks "excuse me" she says "i need some air..." she moves towards the back door. jason notices kathryn in distress "baby whats wrong" he gets up from the bar and moves towards her leaving his wallet on the bar. james stops him and asks dayna to help kathryn with the door to get some air. -
Scene 10 by butterfield8 james guides jason back to the bar and touches the pictures of jason's kids in his wallet. two panels of windows appear, one of erik, one of maia. "what are you afraid of" james asks. jason looks at the images of his smiling kids and a tear runs down his cheek "i am terrified of ruining my children's lives. i want to wake up with them in the same house everyday. i dont want to miss a minute. i want to give them the best life possible. what will there lives be if i get a divorce?" as jason talks about his fears he touches the panels and possible outcomes appear as branches of a tree. erik a college football player? or a womanizing bar tender? maia a struggling songwriter? or she has a practical job because she is sacred of taking any risk. it is all too overwhelming for james -
Scene 11 by butterfield8 dayna and kathryn sit at a little table and chairs in the back alley where someone may come for a smoke break. the snow is falling slowly, beautifully. kathryn looks out in the distance. "i am almost 40 years old. i have always wanted to have a baby. and a baby made from such love. i love him so much. i have tried to end our relationship so many times. i never thought id be in a relationship with a married man. but it is so real and so honest and i have never felt safer in any relationship. i can be me, the real me and he loves me for who i am." "but i know he doesnt want any more kids.” but how can I even consider an abortion -
Scene 12 by butterfield8 "what do you want kathryn" dayna asks "i dont want anyone to get hurt." as kathryn's thoughts pour out of her, the grafitti on the alley brick walls comes to life showing her hopes and fears. "i dont want jason's wife to be hurt. i dont want my actions to hurt his kids and effect their lives. he says if she ever found out about the affair she will kick him out and not let him see the kids. and he cant bear that. he cant bear not being in their live every day. being a father is the most important thing to him." "i keep hearing you talk about what is best for him and his kids and his wife but what do you want?" -
Scene 13 by butterfield8 as kathryn continues to tell her innermost thoughts the grafitti wall keeps morphing "i want to have our baby. i want to look into her eyes and see him and me. i want him to be a part of her life. i want his children to know her. i dont want them to resent her. i dont want her to be a secret. i dont want her to be ashamed of our love. i dont even need him to live with us...just be a part of our lives." am i being selfsh. is an abortion the best answer so nobody gets hurt -
Scene 14 by butterfield8 Jason is pacing and getting increasingly frustrated. he bangs on the back door “Kathryn!” doug stand there pulling on the door as well (he wouldn’t mind finding a way to come and go from the bar as he pleases…). “old man – you open this door right now” Jason threatens “if anything has happened to her…” james reassures him “dayna is with her,” james leads jason to the lounge area and turns on an old tv set“lets watch the game” “ whose playing” Jason asks as a college football game appears on the tube…they sit in silence…(doug is still at theback door trying to find a way to open the door. -
Scene 15 by butterfield8 doug gives up and sits with the guys. "i never played football" doug says "i use my brain not my brawn..."football is an amzing game" doug says "like chess. you have all these plays built, all these strategies, you watch their games to know what to expect and be prepared for it.... erik plays football. a real natural too. he's got a nose for the ball." "but even when you have a carefully designed play, the tides can quickly turn..." just then the quarterback is intercepted -
Scene 16 by butterfield8 nothing in life is a guarantee. nothing is set in stone. you can have the best plan, the best intentions, and things can still not have the best outcome. “you’re telling me” doug says.“or you can have something happen in your life, something challenging and painful but it defines who you are and makes you stronger and leads you down another path…doesn’t sound like we are talking about football anymore Jason says looking towards the back door -
Scene 17 by butterfield8 “another vodka” Jason asks. james gets up and goes to the bar "i love kathryn. i have never felt this way before. we have been together for 4 years and i can tell her anything, i tell her everything, i love just laying in bed with her and listening to music and telling each other about our days. she supports me but doesnt let me get away with bullshit...and the sex did i mention the sex. it is unbelievable. its like she is made for me and i am made for her.“how I miss sex” doug says wandering off in his mind… -
Scene 18 by butterfield8 I just can’t. I cant leave my family. I cant leave my kids. its not about me. its not about how much I love Kathryn. when we were first together I said to her “life is too short, you only live once…” I never thought I would fall in love with her. I know I am being so selfish. I never thought we’d both be…“trapped” Kathryn says as she opens the back door …snow falls in from outside -
Scene 19 by butterfield8 Jason goes over to Kathryn and holds her in his arms…are you ok? he asks….i love you she tells him. he grabs her face in his hands. I love you too baby. dayna is by the jukebox again and slow music comes on. Jason slowly sways back and forth as he holds her…almost dancing -
Scene 20 by butterfield8 james doug and dayna sit at the bar watching. whats going to happen doug asks james? is she going to have an abortion? is he going to leave his family and forever alter his kids lives…dayna “don’t you get it yet…one action doesn’t create on reaction or outcome. and they can only take one step at a time. if she has the baby, it doesn’t mean he will leave his family, it doesn’t mean that his kids will turn into drug addicts…or if she decides to terminate her pregnancy, it doesn’t mean that his kids will grow up problem free..or that she wont have another baby later with a man that is free to love her -
Scene 21 by butterfield8 but how are we gonna help them? doug asks “do you really want to help them doug or just think it will help you get one step closer to getting out of here…” dayna asks…james comes out from behind the bar and tosses doug a rag to clean up and grabs dayna’s hand…”we already have helped them doug…” james and dayna dance as jason and Kathryn continue to sway -
Scene 22 by butterfield8 doug takes the rag and goes to wipe the juke box screen. the camera moves to the jukebox and into the cover art of the female artist singing a blues song about love, heartbrake and hope. CD title "cinco de maia..." -
Scene 23 by butterfield8 doug walks towards the tv. the sound is still on... the tv announcer "erik johnson intercepts the ball at the 3 yard line...amazing comeback for the senior who was in a horrible car crash last year and came back to lead this raiders team..." -
Scene 24 by butterfield8 doug goes back behind the bar...and passes a section of cards mementos...camera zooms in on a picture of "Eve's First Birthday"
