Can you help "the woman with multiple personalities?" Posted by Jim_Goldblum | FEBRUARY 15, 2011
My mother, Mary Patrick, is an incredible person who not only raised my brothers and I to be incredible gentlemen, but she taught us how to be professionals, and how to have fun. She is extremely charitable; she even bought a house for a disabled family member in need. Though she does not share the same Karmic dilemma as the woman in this pitch, I am modeling the character from her personality.
Maria Noel Gordon (Genie) is a middle-aged professional, optimist, and mother of two. Her life would have been considered almost normal. She had a beautiful family, a great job, and a husband who loved her. However, she had a personality disorder, which from time to time, conflicted with her interests.
She had three distinct personalities:
A professional personality, which goes by her last name, helps her excel at work. As a Systems Administrator for a large computer manufacturing company (possibly Doug's company), she plays a key role in maintaining computer systems. One mistake could cost the company thousands, if not millions of dollars. It is a high stress job with little room for error.
She has a matronly personality which helped her raise her family and love her husband. This personality had no issues caring for her family. She loved to clean the house, make dinner, and keep everyone comfortable. This personality really obsessed over these things.
She had a fun loving optimistic personality who loved peace and frogs (no really, she really loves frogs). During the summer she would go boating by Long Island. During the winter, she went skiing. She is your modern day hippie, complete with a tye-dye hat that says Peace and Frogs! when she is in this personality, all problems and concerns in her life are far away. All that matters is enjoying life, and looking forward towards the fruits of the future.
The personalities rarely clashed, as each had their own purpose. But as time passed her children grew. Both of her children now attend college, far away from their home. Just over a year ago, her husband passed unexpectedly due to a car accident. What was once a full and loving home had turned to a deserted, lonely abode that felt cold to Maria.
Maria's matron personality no longer had a purpose. Everything had been stripped away from this personality. With no children to watch and no husband to love, the matron personality became frustrated and jealous of the other two personalities which were still living full lives.
At work, Maria the matron would take over during conferences. The personality would begin flirting with her male, married co-workers. When Maria goes out shopping, to parks, or to go boating, her matron personality would take over. The personality would begin forcing herself on other people's babies. She would insist on holding them, and would have a hard time letting them go. Eventually, she gets arrested for refusing to return a child to its mother.
The dilemma is convincing the matron personality to allow the other personalities not to be interrupted because of its loss. Because of the personality conflict, Maria is about ready to be fired from her job. Without her on the staff, the company's systems would go down causing significant losses to a company that was extremely charitable. Furthermore, if Maria were to continue down this path, her actions would eventually kill an infant; either through smothering the child, or neglect.
The Bar Karma team must determine what it is that is missing from her life. Problem is, the matron understands that the team is trying to control her. So, she hides behind the veil of the fun loving personality and the professional personality. Using the cards, James manages to piece together the missing piece of her life. The matron is forced to surface.
The team could either help the matron personality find a source of fulfillment, or they could persuade the matron to never return again by convincing the matron that she will eventually kill a child, something that she would never want to do.

I feel it necessary to really elaborate on the Karmic Dilemma Maria will be facing in this episode.
When Maria arrives at Bar Karma, I would hope that it would be after a very traumatic incident occurred due to the Matron's rebellion. Maria should be distraught, hard to interact with, and extremely confused. As a person with a mental disorder, which is really developing into a truly crippling problem, she will not take to Doug's help easily.
Rebecca_Phillips sent me a message further defining some of the issues of MPD. One of the things she mentioned was that patients suffering from MPD are very nervous around Bi-Polar patients. I would imagine that Doug wouldn't react patiently towards Maria, which in turn throws her off.
Stress is often a method of changing personalities according to Science Journals. Stress caused by a traumatic incident, combined with a new environment, further combined with an inpatient Doug; would cause Maria's personality to switch.
Her personality switches to the professional, who immediately checks her watch, realizing that she is supposed to be at work storms out of the bar and back into the world. The professional is in charge until she gets back into work.
The matron takes over, and her actions turn reckless. She crudely insults the married men, and flirts with younger single men. That is when Doug finds her; the matron accidentally flirts with him. Then, recognizing him from the bar, switches back to the fun-loving optimist who has gotten over the trauma, and cooperates with Doug. This is when Doug realizes that it is an MPD disorder.
They go back to the bar. James and Dayna try to find methods to bring out the hurt personality. The fun-loving personality talks about the Matron very awkwardly. "She doesn't like it when I talk about her. She is very private and deserves my respect."
James and his cards reveal several branches of her future. She is fired from her company, and her personal well-being turns to ruin as charities funded by the company become unfunded. Another branch reveals that she kills a baby by accidental strangulation. Maria ends up in an asylum, languishing for a crime two of her personalities didn't commit.
Dayna looks at Maria, eye to eye. They connect as women, as Dayna is able to relate to all three of her personalities, while the men look on earnestly.
Maria quickly switches through the Professional and the Fun-Loving personality, until Dayna finally convinces the Matron to reveal herself. She concedes the battle, admitting her jealousy, and her problem. She tells the story of her husband and her children. Doug steps out of the bar (for reasons that will be revealed later).
The matron, having finally revealed her issues, still has troubles coming to terms with her new reality. She refuses the drinks. Doug walks back into the bar, James looks at Doug questioningly. Doug merely nods, understanding that his need to speak has passed.
The matron, still experiencing doubts, remorse, and apprehension decides that she is ready to leave the bar. She promises to keep Dayna's advice to heart. She steps out of the bar.
Alone, Maria walks home. Imagining nice music, in a minor key, playing her out during her walk. She is standing outside of her home. The lights are on. She tilts her head, and walks in.
Her two sons are waiting for her there. They say a man named Doug brought them back home for a special occasion (whatever the season of air date may be). The matron, still realizing that she has a family, finds her place and remembers to be patient.

I like it Tim! I think so many fictional story lines are developed from real life experience and tweaked a bit for fictional reasons. GOOD stuff my friend!

In general I really like this pitch. I do have one caution. Each of the personalities sound very similar to one of the personalities in The United States of Tara. There may be some legal issues without a rework of the personalities.

Rjzatezalo:
Never heard of this show; but here is the general plot for those like me who know nothing about it:
"Tara Gregson is a wife and mother of two children in the suburbs of Kansas City who has been diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder (DID). Whenever she is stressed, she transitions into one of her alternate personalities: wild and flirty teenager T; 1950s housewife Alice; and male, loud, beer-drinking Vietnam vet Buck. A fourth personality, Gimme, is introduced later in the first season. During the second season of the series, two further personalities were introduced. The former, called Shoshana, is Tara's "therapist" of sorts, while the sixth personality's name is Chicken, an infantile representation of Tara when she was 5 years old. Tara is supported by her husband Max, daughter Kate, and son Marshall, who is gay. Her sister, Charmaine, is somewhat promiscuous and not very supportive of Tara, as she often expresses doubts about the validity of her sister's disorder. The show is set in Overland Park, Kansas."
I don't think we are into any real danger because the, "Housewife" personality is too general to copyright. The Fun Loving Hippie should not resemble a teenager, but rather a modern day hippie who has a blog, and loves Peace and Frogs. Her professional personality has nothing to do with a Vietnam vet. There are enough differences here that would be enough to disassociate Maria from Tara.
Furthermore, the two stories are completely different in terms of where the plot is centered. US of Tara wasn't the first show to focus on multiple personality disorders, and I am certain that it won't be the last. I don't see copyright violations here.
Thanks for the warning though! If you like the pitch, please recommend it.

OK! One bit of clarity though from my end. I want to make absolutely clear, if it sounded as if I was accusing you of anything unethical in this pitch, I was not! I do think it is better to play devil's advocate as it were out in the open where you can respond; rather than have this is discussed inside a studio without your knowldedge.... Good luck!

No, I understand that you were just being cautious. I tend to watch out for these things as well. Luckily, U.S. of Tara seems to be a very unique show. One would have to deliberately steal from them to break copyright laws.
Thanks for the warning though. Was good to compare the two characters just to make sure. Also, thank you for the recommendation.

I really love Rebecca_Phillips idea of the stuffies. In this case, Maria could have stuffed frogs on her window sill, left there by her fun loving personality. I would imagine that the matron, in her jealousy, would tear up the frog stuffies, devastating her fun loving personality.
Imagine that for a Cold Opener. A woman is in the room by herself. She looks angry and clenches her fists on the comforter. Eyeing the stuffies, she runs over to them and rips them apart using only her hands, nails, and teeth.
She stands up and walks away. Suddenly, her tightened grip drops and she has a nice smile on her face. She turns to see her frog stuffies, only to see them destroyed. She bursts into tears; and runs out the door.
She runs into Bar Karma, devastated. Her pain is uncontrollable.

Yeah, it would be a challenge. Thats why I felt the need to really go into depth for the dilemma. I want to make sure every personality point is hit appropriately, while staying true to the disorder, keeping a Sci-Fi bent to it.
