Hey storytellers, as you know, we’re big fans of the all-new 2011 Mazda2. Today we have another sponsored challenge to integrate our favorite subcompact wonder car into episode 5 of “Bar Karma.”

Two characters are inside an all-new 2011 MAZDA2.  Can you follow your inner driver to describe the scene that ensues?

When considering your integration ideas, make sure to check out the pitches currently in Story Development:

The Football Player

  The Expectant Mother

The Man in the Hospital Gown

The Failing Businessman

Your characters can get in the car, stand next to the car, converse in the car, or drive into frame or out of frame with the car. They can even sit on the car!

Also, here’s some additional info about the car to consider:

Mazda2 is all about connecting with the Inner Driver that lives in all of us and delivering the emotion of motion we call Zoom-Zoom.  Great things really do come in small packages.

Need more information? Check out the Mazda USA website: http://www.mazdausa.com/mazda2.

Rules to abide by:

This car is not interested in partying. No drugs or alcohol, please.

The car will not be used for or engaged in any acts of violence. That includes collisions, explosions, using the car as a weapon, and not wearing your safety belt

No high speed peel outs, burning rubber, or sexual innuendo.

Let’s stay away from competitor references.

Finally, Mazda reserves the right to add or delete any of the above listed standards

As the show starts there is a Mazda 2 inside bar karma. James is behind the counter and Doug walks in from back. In surprise Doug asks why is there a car in the bar! James responds that it's a piece of art, culture, like everything else on the wall. "It's a representation of early 21st century movement towards practicalism." James continues, subtly listing off features such as gas mileage and affordability which set it apart from other cars of the time and justifying the looks and color as artistic.

From here the door opens and the story continues, with the Mazda sitting in the background.

The character is scared and doesn't believe what they're told inside the bar about the future and their karma. They run outside and jump in their Mazda2. They drive around the block but every time they turn the corner they turn onto the same block as Bar Karma and wind up coming back into the bar for an explanation from Doug, James and/or Dayna.

  • The driver hooks up a cable that goes from a metallic bracelet or necklace he is using to the car's GPS system (or some kind of personal "electronic" amulet in which he associates a lot of meaning). The idea is to explicitly connect the "inner driver" of the driver to the car's driver system. The GPS would direct/guide the driver to the external destination that matches where he/she wants to go, following some hint or gudance from within (i.e.: matching inner and outer paths).

This one goes at the end of the episode....

As the staff of Bar Karma say their farewells to the patient in the hospital gown, Dayna hands the patient a car key. The patient looks up, slack jawed and gasping as if about to ask "What's this?" Dayna interrupts with "Don't ask any questions. It's been here waiting for you for decades." The... more

In the Failing businessman I have him try to start the car only to go back inside. Dead battery but hard to believe since everything works..it's karma you know, when he leaves to go back into his life at the end, the battery is fine. Plenty of ways to have him show off the car, Or it could be his key no longer fits his car or if elctronic ignition, it just won't work. The car is tied to his decsion preventing him from leaving.

It's 11:50pm on New Year's Eve. But, unlike most other bars in the world, only James, Doug and Dayna are present in this one. This is an strange phenomenon and Doug calls James out to explain it. James is oddly serene as if he expected the bar to to empty on what should be the busiest and most upbeat night of the year. Doug steps up to James who is cleaning the beer taps and... more

A huge smile on his face, Doug guides his Mazda 2 over the test track. "Feel that? Hear that?" he says to Dayna, her hair blowing around her face. She laughs at his adolescent joy.
Cut To: Doug drives his replica car around the walls of Bar Karma. He's making the engine sounds.
    Dayna and James watch.
"Ok. I get it. But does he have to do the sound effects too?"
Close Up: Doug navigates the tight obstacle of a chair-back. He makes the sounds of peeling rubber and revving through the gears.
Title: "Drive with all your senses engaged."

Here's probably one late in the game as the pilot is probably all done.

Could have a "Batman type" introduction scene running over the standard features of the Mazda2 outside to inside detailing the standard features as well the not so standard features like abilities to warp time-space or what ever is cooked up (yes, that was an unintentional Notso... more

Man in hospital gown steals the keys to the car... he goes outside and fumbles to open the door... just as the door opens he drops the keys... looking around and under the car, he climbs into the car and the door slams closed locking him in. He searches the car glove box and interior looking for another set of keys.... reaching accross he opens the oposite door.... climbing into the seat he makes his way out of the car... only to find himself right back in the bar.....

Doug gets in the car and starts adjusting his seat. He starts having fun playing with the controls, making it seem like the 6-way controls are more like a massaging chair. Then he grabs his iPhone (AT&T Product) and plugs it on the auxiliary jack and starts rocking out to a mix version of the Zoom Zoom song.

I see the failing businessman giving a graduation present to his teenage daughter in a flashback. He doesn't really know her all that well, since he throws himself into his work and travels often, but went to enough trouble to find out that the Mazda2 was her dream car, and figured out a way to make her dream come true. This could be contrasted to a scene after everything comes crashing down, when he has to sell all of his assets, including all the family cars, to pay back debts and damages to his angry investors.

Two young guys driving in the car together. They stop at a traffic light. Passenger in the car looks at himself in the visor mirror, turns to his friend and says "We're so bitchen." They both smile, the light turns green and they speed through the intersection. Hollywood & Vine? -- YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO PAY ME FOR MORE PITCHES :P

Mom and her rebellious teenage son are pulling up to Bar Karma. It's obvious that her life may be falling apart and his behavior is a consequence of a lot of turmoil and possibly bad decision making on her part. Her cell phone is dead and she is going to need to jump in the bar to make a call. She walks into Bar Karma and she enters the other side 15 years younger and pregnant. Is this a chance to start over?

Okay, so this is for the Mazda2 to show up in Episode 5 (a scene INSIDE the car) and we have 3 potential storylines so far for Ep 5: Expectant Mother, Man in Hospital Gown, and Failing Businessman.

I'm gonna go with Failing Businessman first:

A well dressed man in his early 60s enters the bar. Looking befuddled and thinking "this isn't the type... more

I would love the idea of Doug going outside the bar to look for how to solve the persons karmic problem, only to be stuck inside the Mazda2. I think we can all agree it would be amusing to watch Doug have a bit of a frustrated tantrum in a Mazda after checking all the usual places people put things (Glove box, the sun visors, under the seats) and finding nothing. The scene would confine... more
