What do you think an office space would look like 50 years in the future? Our production designers and VFX team need to know. We know it'll be sleek and minimalist. And maybe screens are gone, and holographs have replaced everything. You tell us.

What bothers me the most about ‘future’ sets is the excess of speculation, and lack of respectable grounding. Now don’t peg me for a realist scrooge -- if the show is set in 2500, then I have no problem with flying cars and holographic secretaries. But in 50 years, I think it's a bit of a stretch to expect a Tron-scape, meals in pill form, and a robot dog that... more

  • Another suggestion, a bit less "radical":
An office that has its main architecture & decoration reflecting ideas from Frank Loyd Wright + Buckminster Fuller + Feng Shui + Virtual Reality & Hologram Tech (which were unknown to them at their time).

The way technology is expanding, there won't be a need to step out of your house. Most of the work will be done inside of your house where Video chatting has been taken to the extreme. Companies do meetings in front of the computer, appearing in a virtual office where they all gather. You will hold the knowledge of the world in your hands as the internet is easier to access from... more

Even now, we're starting to see electronic devices that combine multiple aspects. Video game systems let us communicate with people around the world. We can browse the internet on our phones. We can watch tv on our computers and use our tvs as computers. I feel that in 50 years, we'll easily have one device combining most of what we use now (computer, phone, music player,... more

  • I think the office space would be essentially made of "holographic" furniture (with a certain degree of adjustable "mass" or density), built in efficient and aesthetic shapes based on natural (and human-made) shapes and patterns.

For example, an office with furniture (and maybe even walls and core structures) made with bright (luminous) and... more

Hanging gardens of Babylon- except not just the foliage-- the relaxation furniture is all we will need for our bodies to lounge in while our minds do all the work again with the help from our own hard ware in our brains.
All needs from phone calls to down loads. So much of our tasks will be handled thru- micro chip technology, that essentially we will handle our work day... more

Just a guy in a recliner wearing a pair of virtual sunglasses with a bank drive by deposit tube next to him
Fish tanks, some plants and a treadmill

The virtual sunglasses have everything conceivable built in -
    phone
    internet
    all networked devices
    multiple conferencing
    software all voice command

bank deposit tube delivers anything the employee needs ordered through the sunglasses- food, papers, coffee, etc

Considering interior designs of 50 years ago, the 1950's or 1960's.... the standard elements of an office still apply: Desk, chair, phone, filing systems, typing instrument, possibly a few entertainment things, and a houseplant.

To prevent this office from looking overly designed, I'd recommend that you avoid blatant themes and stick with elements... more

Offices will be similar, but the main difference is the "Office Spy" program, which is commonplace in offices across the world. You enter in a list of things you want Office Spy to watch for and alert you of. Office Spy will send you instant messages when one of these acts is committed and ask you how you want to proceed -- Allow, Punish, or Terminate. If you... more

The office will be paperless. Everything will be wireless. Hi-res digital, touch-surfaces everywhere.

Workstations will be like large desktop iPads. Handheld portable assistants as compact as an iPad, as intelligent as a 5th grader — the personal digital assistant is a handy, portable portal to the ubiquitous wireless network. Phone, video, computer and entertainment... more

Your office is filled with what seems real people, however, it is all animations of people who work from home by lying in a "Work Translander" that lands you at your job. No getting sick form other people. No calling in sick. No commute. No hassle.

As business becomes global, office workers will need to relate to their customers wherever they are in the world. To help with this, each individual office/cubical will mimic the time zone and weather of your customer's location.

For example, Company X provides payroll services to small companies all over the world. Employee Al services customers in New York ,... more

many people feel nostalgic about things from 50 years ago, and that nostalgia may find it's way into the design of modern settings 50 years from now, like our furniture. Look at how poular the old fasioned telephones are. Right now think geek has a bluetooth, old hadset that looks like a payphone handset. Look at how many women dress like they're from the 50's that are in their 20's & 30's. 50 years from now might look like now but with higher functionality.

The office 50 years in the future should functionally be pretty similar to the office of today with updated technology.

Paper thin monitors and touch "keyboard" surfaces.
DryErase Boards that are actually large monitor surfaces that you write on with a "marker" stylus and erase with an "eraser" stylus.
    iPad in place of notepadsmore

I agree with Lrn_Willis ... we won't be too far removed from where we are now, but... here's what I see:

As we condense our lives and jobs via the computer, the needs for what lies in a work space cubicle would becomes less. Perhaps they become narrower but taller- more like a roomy phone booth. Your chair would be more upright and ergonomic to the extreme.... more

Lots of Robotic/digital servants with limited AI for data mining, janitorial duties, and personal assistance. A massive amount of Augmented reality using eyeglasses, screens would seem to be displayed a few feet away from a users face. Multifaceted screens like Win 7 phone Screens. Semacode and Rfid tags would allow for digital art, virtual monitors, and adds to be displayed according to the user and track their location. Work Stations are mobile allowing workers to be almost anywhere in the building. Many cameras allowing for Telepresence and observation of employees. Augmented reality controllers worn like gloves akin to minority report.

another aspect of business i would like to see happen in the future is:

in a global society i would like to see that whole industries, businesses, etc are not located with such concentration in one area....WALL STREET....9/11/01...the problems don't have to be an attack...could be solar flares affecting the grid...etc. etc.....but in a global society we should not and will not have to maintain singular areas of concentration for such powerful elements of society as economics, farming, energy medicine, education, etc etc etc

The office should be minimalist with a glassy/transparent style with holographs.
