As restaurants take Foie Gras off the menu, in this ‘on the sofa’ discussion, Kirk Leech argues that we shouldn’t worry about eating it and that the detractors have got it wrong. Our intolerance of life style choices is a problem he argues, force feeding ducks is not. Respondents debate the issue and discuss the animal rights angle, reducing humans to the level of ducks, posh food, production and campaign violence. More than a culinary culture war is on the cards. As restaurants take Foie Gras off the menu, in this ‘on the sofa’... more

At the Kayabuki restaurant in Utsunomiya, Japan, there are two costumed monkeys who are employed as waiters. A Tucson restaurant won’t serve African lion tacos after all because it received “many threats on the safety of our restaurant, our families, our customers and our vendors,” its owner said tonight.
Boca Tacos and Tequila, 828 E. Speedway, planned to sell lion tacos one time, Feb. 16, as the latest in its Wednesday “exotic” taco specials, which previously included frog legs, alligator, rocky mountain oysters and rattlesnake.
“While Boca will always take the utmost pride in offering creative and unique menu items ... we will not do so at the risk of safety for their families, customers, vendors, supporters, and friends,” owner Bryan Mazon said in a news release.
In a telephone interview, Mazon said he reported threats to Tucson police “and we do have a case number.” He said there were probably 20-25 “direct threats,” and “probably hundreds” of indirect threats, many of them made on Facebook.
He also said telephone threats were called in to his own family’s home, after critics posted his personal information on Facebook.
“I can’t put my family members in any sort of harm’s way,” Mazon said. Police told him to contact them with any additional threats, he said.
Mazon said he and the restaurant never received a single threat due to any other exotic meat it has served.
On the other end of the spectrum, “we probably had over 100 pre-orders” for the African lion tacos, he said, including queries about shipments around the country. He said he hadn’t yet ordered the lion meat he would have sold.
He said he’ll announce the replacement special for Feb. 16 but hasn’t decided.

“The Empty Restaurants of New York” is an emotionally moving collection of photographs by the Dutch photographer Wijnanda Deroo. Deroo’s work depicts the hushed melancholy of vacant interiors found in the cafes and restaurants from four of New York City’s five boroughs. Instead of actual people, there is the presence of people who have been there before and who might be there again. Despite the lack of people present in Deroo’s work, there exists a tangible presence of human experience and activity, manifested in the subtle clues left behind from a once vibrant history. Her alluring use of color and composition invites the viewer into these hauntingly empty spaces with emotive power, reinforcing the perspective that beauty can be found in the least likely of places.
This piece includes a number of stunning high-resolution color photographs, a memorable slide show and the hauntingly beautiful music video, “Alone in New York.”

“Back of the House” is a behind the scenes look at the world of fine dining by photographer Michael Harlan Turkell. This collection of photographs reveals restaurants’ often unrecognized subcultures; it presents the artistry, diligence, precision and camaraderie that endures throughout the chaos.
The vivacious celebrity chefs who are prominent in today’s pop culture give the impression that their work merely springs from their own energetic imaginations. In reality, their product is the work of a large team of people whose efforts and skills too often go unrecognized and unappreciated by both gourmands and the general public. Turkell’s project celebrates these people’s hard work and captures perfectly the atmosphere of the back of the house.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution photographs, a slide show and a documentary short film.

Wow, I love this scene! There's so much going on with this group of guys. A gaggle of cooks on break, looks like they're outside of some fancy restaurant down in Greenwich Village. For a minute there, I thought the one guy had his foot chained to the ashtray. Terrific shot, makes me wonder what those cook guys are looking at, what they're all laughing about. And I really like that other guy's bright red sock...must be to let everybody know that he's the Holy Moly Super Captain Marvel Cook! Yep, sure must be.
