Athens -- Facing a debt burden that could enslave its citizens for decades to come, Greece has gone on the offensive, declaring it will halt the production of gyros worldwide if it’s not given a larger line of credit.
“Go ahead and laugh, but I can assure you your local Greek diner or deli has at most a four-day supply of Gyro ingredients,” said Mikos Demetrius, Greece’s Minister of Sandwich Provisions. “Once that’s gone, you will no longer taste the deliciousness of the Gyro unless more credit is served up to Greece.”
At issue is the cylinder of meat that is spun roasted and sliced to become the signature ingredient of a Gyro.
Some say it is a mixture of minced lamb and beef. Others say its phallic shape is an obscenity. But Mr. Demetrius contends the meat comes directly from the giant gyrus, a distant cousin of the giraffe, which reportedly can be found only in the Greek highlands.
“We are asking the world’s financial powers to be like giraffes, to look above and beyond this little debt debate and see the big picture,” the Greek minister said. “Credit has its limits, but Gyros are forever.”
In a related development, the futures markets for white yogurt sauce were thrown into chaos as the result of the threat of a Gyro ban. Initially, the price went up to over $100 a barrel. Then it plummeted to $2.50, when traders realized that without the gyrus there is no Gyro, and therefore no need for yogurt sauce.
The McDonald’s Corporation, meanwhile, recently began test marketing a new sandwich called the McLambwich. However, the product was pulled from the menu after several diners began coughing up wool balls.
Mr. Demetrius was philosophical about entire situation: “Greece has gone from being the cradle of democracy to becoming the world’s number one party nation. It is only fitting that a sandwich will save us. Do you want hot sauce on yours?”Athens -- Facing a debt burden that could enslave its citizens for decades to come,... more

“Hambuster” is a wickedly funny six-minute 3D stereoscopic short film, co-directed by five students from Supinfocom Arles.
Now, anyone who spends time eating their way around restaurant-obsessed America knows that when it comes to food, we are now living in a brave new burger world. America is awash in hamburger options, from business-lunch burgers, to chic nightclub sliders, to great hamburger creations to eat while you sit on a bench in the park, or even better, delicious burgers delivered piping-hot right to your seat while you watch a ballgame.
Maybe today you just might like having yourself a good juicy hamburger for lunch, while sitting in a peacefully quiet place in the neighborhood park. But what if your lunch doesn’t like that idea at all, goes absolutely crazy-mad and decides to attack you? Out in the street everyone can hear your loud and bloody screams, but honestly who cares?
Includes a number of colorful pictures, as well as the darkly humorous animated short film.

Some of the most famous novels and literary moments of all time were written and inspired by cafes in Europe. From the American ex-pat writers in Paris to Henrik Ibsen's continental travels, cafes were a place to work while socializing, building stories, and of course, eating and drinking. If you've turned to coffee shops and restaurants to study instead of your room or the library, you'll appreciate the literary significance of these 15 famous cafes.

As restaurants take Foie Gras off the menu, in this ‘on the sofa’ discussion, Kirk Leech argues that we shouldn’t worry about eating it and that the detractors have got it wrong. Our intolerance of life style choices is a problem he argues, force feeding ducks is not. Respondents debate the issue and discuss the animal rights angle, reducing humans to the level of ducks, posh food, production and campaign violence. More than a culinary culture war is on the cards. As restaurants take Foie Gras off the menu, in this ‘on the sofa’... more

A Tucson restaurant won’t serve African lion tacos after all because it received “many threats on the safety of our restaurant, our families, our customers and our vendors,” its owner said tonight.
Boca Tacos and Tequila, 828 E. Speedway, planned to sell lion tacos one time, Feb. 16, as the latest in its Wednesday “exotic” taco specials, which previously included frog legs, alligator, rocky mountain oysters and rattlesnake.
“While Boca will always take the utmost pride in offering creative and unique menu items ... we will not do so at the risk of safety for their families, customers, vendors, supporters, and friends,” owner Bryan Mazon said in a news release.
In a telephone interview, Mazon said he reported threats to Tucson police “and we do have a case number.” He said there were probably 20-25 “direct threats,” and “probably hundreds” of indirect threats, many of them made on Facebook.
He also said telephone threats were called in to his own family’s home, after critics posted his personal information on Facebook.
“I can’t put my family members in any sort of harm’s way,” Mazon said. Police told him to contact them with any additional threats, he said.
Mazon said he and the restaurant never received a single threat due to any other exotic meat it has served.
On the other end of the spectrum, “we probably had over 100 pre-orders” for the African lion tacos, he said, including queries about shipments around the country. He said he hadn’t yet ordered the lion meat he would have sold.
He said he’ll announce the replacement special for Feb. 16 but hasn’t decided.

“The Empty Restaurants of New York” is an emotionally moving collection of photographs by the Dutch photographer Wijnanda Deroo. Deroo’s work depicts the hushed melancholy of vacant interiors found in the cafes and restaurants from four of New York City’s five boroughs. Instead of actual people, there is the presence of people who have been there before and who might be there again. Despite the lack of people present in Deroo’s work, there exists a tangible presence of human experience and activity, manifested in the subtle clues left behind from a once vibrant history. Her alluring use of color and composition invites the viewer into these hauntingly empty spaces with emotive power, reinforcing the perspective that beauty can be found in the least likely of places.
This piece includes a number of stunning high-resolution color photographs, a memorable slide show and the hauntingly beautiful music video, “Alone in New York.”
