Ultra endurance events don't need to be high budget. Some teams have enormous budgets and can afford mobile homes and the like. But the experience can be had for a fraction of the cost by roughing it in the back of a transit van. In 2007 Luke cycled the entire route of the tour de France. In this article (part 4) he rides the Tour de France prologue and watches the Grand Depart.Ultra endurance events don't need to be high budget. Some teams have enormous budgets... more
The most popular article on this site so far has been “this is the way to experience life – 100 goals in 100 weeks”. I have decided to follow Ian Ushers lead and write my list of 10 endurance events I want to complete before I die. So no more excuses, it’s time for me to take action!
And in the process to ask for your help. Can you help me reach any of these goals ? Do you have any of the same ambitions ? Would you like to do one of them together ? Do you have the skills or experience to guide, teach or advise me and help me to reach any of them? I’m keen, hungry and willing to learn. The most popular article on this site so far has been “this is the way to experience... more

The Tour de France is one of the world’s great sporting events. A national institution in France and cause of great celebration around the world. Roughly 3500km long and over about 20 days it is a gruelling test of body and mind.
In 2007 I rode the entire route 1 day ahead of the professionals and thought I would put together an overview of my trip and provide some pointers for others tempted to tackle a stage or the whole route. This is part 1 of a series of articles documenting my story. The Tour de France is one of the world’s great sporting events. A national... more
Setting out on an adventure can be a daunting experience especially when we are travelling alone. We fear that we will be just that “alone”. This is rarely the case, more often it is the people we meet and the experiences we share that form the best and strongest memories of our journey.
I enjoyed this experience recently spending 5 months rock climbing in Fontainebleau, France and today’s guest post by Nathan Winters describes just such an experience of the power of connection with new people when he embarked on an amazing 4300 mile bike ride across America.Setting out on an adventure can be a daunting experience especially when we are... more
The psychology of completing ultra endurance events is one of staying in the moment. but looking deeper, why are we participating in the first place ? What drives us to push our bodies far beyond our preconditioned limits. Lance Armstrong has said “All endurance athletes are running away from something”. Is he right? This video uses images from ultra endurance cycling and considers “suffering” in the makeup of an endurance athlete.
I hope you enjoy this inspirational cycling video – Please take a moment to comment afterwards and give your thoughts on Phil’s view of endurance cycling psychology, what drives you to complete ultra distance events ?The psychology of completing ultra endurance events is one of staying in the moment.... more
The mountain cols of the Tour de France have been the scene of epic battles since the very start of the race in the early 20th Century. For amateur riders they provide a a chance to test yourself on a battlefield with no hiding places. Riding one or two in a day is a big challenge! This cyling video is about Phil Deeker who’s ambitions were just a little bit bigger. He rode 319 of them in 29 days clocking up a staggering 4580 km with 82,300 metres climbed.

Doesn't matter where this happens, but it sickes me that these atricles are not properly covered widely by the press or... you have to search for them, if you hear it on the news. The local newspapers feel it more important to cover celebrity lawsuits than to cover what has happened to our roadways where more and more pedestrians and cyclists are getting killed. Hating to live in a place where the outdoors is a place to fear if you walk or petal, to get around!Doesn't matter where this happens, but it sickes me that these atricles are not... more
This 7-yr-old girl is now an orphan because a truck veered into the shoulder her parents were riding tandem and killed them both. The driver is out walking free and was never ticketed or charged.
This happened near my hometown of San Antonio and although it's breaking hearts amongst locals, I wanted this situation to be known on a larger scale because I know it's not just a San Antonio or Texas issue. Cyclists are being treated no better than deer even in cities with a bike-friendly attitude. If you are a Texan, please to go to biketexas.org and sign the BikeTexas Safe Passing petition. If you are not, please do all that you can within your own community to ensure the cyclists and pedestrians have rights out there on the road and have a better chance of getting home safely. This 7-yr-old girl is now an orphan because a truck veered into the shoulder her... more
This short film uses the words from Tim Crabbe's classic novel about road cycling. "The Rider". It is probably the greatest book ever written about cycle racing and gives a unique insight into the mindset of bike racers. This film is dark in character and focuses on one aspect of a winning bike racers psychology. Not necessarily nice or pleasent but without it, a bike racer will never reach their potential. This short film uses the words from Tim Crabbe's classic novel about road cycling.... more

...but there has to be some kind of economic incentive; companies would have to incorporate it into their practice somehow. Let's say a company has 500 people, and every day 400 of them spend at least 30 minutes on the hypothetical power generating machines (machines which, when combined, generate even more electricity, the way a supercomputer brings together smaller components to do big tasks). that would create how much electricity? companies who give back substantial power to the grid would be rewarded with tax breaks. Individuals with both mental and physical skills would be favored over those with only physical or only mental attributes. Natural Selection restored. Health would be all encompassing and self-bolstering, from individual to company to grid......but there has to be some kind of economic incentive; companies would have to... more
