Japan-based Sumitomo Corporation will team up with International Power GDF Suez and PT Supreme Energy to build two geothermal power plants in Muaralaboh in West Sumatra and Rajabasa in Lampung.
The power plants will have a total capacity of 2x110 megawatts (MW) each. State power utility PT PLN will then buy the electricity with the price of 9.4 US cents per kilowatt-hour for Muaralaboh and 9.5 cents for Rajabasa.
The investment value for the Muaralaboh power plant reaches $661 million, while the Rajabasa plant hits $683 million. The mining permits for the two geothermal blocks were awarded in early 2010 and would last for 35 years. The plants are expected to begin commercial operations in 2016.
Indonesia is home to 40 percent of the world’s geothermal reserves with the potential of producing more than 27,000 MW of power. However, as of today, the country can only generate 1,341 MW of power from geothermal power plants, or only 4.6 percent of its total potential.
“The two projects are part of the second phase of the 10,000 megawatts [MW] fast-track program,” PLN president director Nur Pamudji said during his speech at the signing ceremony of the power purchase agreements (PPAs) at the Finance Ministry in Jakarta on Friday.
“Electricity produced from the plants will be connected to the Sumatra interconnection system which spans from Lampung to Aceh,” he added.
Coinciding with the signing, Finance Minister Agus Martowardojo announced that the government had issued guarantee letters for PLN’s business worthiness (SJKU) for the two projects to help developers find financing.
“The guarantee letters are part of the ministry’s commitment to accelerate the construction of power plants using renewable energy, coal and natural gas by independent power producers [IPP],” he explained.
Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa claimed the guarantee would pave the way for the resurgence of geothermal development in the country. He said a few decades ago, Indonesia was known for its most effective and efficient Kamojang geothermal power plant in West Java.
“But after that, we spent too much time on discussing plans, but not in executing them,” he emphasized.
Pamudji expected that the issuance of the guarantee letters could be a good precedent for other geothermal projects. He reported that the company was now in negotiations with several other developers across the country.

Indonesia has the potential to become the world's geothermal energy superpower, said Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore.
Gore spoke Sunday to 350 participants from 21 countries gathered in Jakarta for the Asia Pacific Summit for the Climate Project.
"Scientists and engineers are now saying confidently that certain forms of enhanced geothermal electricity production may represent one of the largest resources of carbon-free electricity available in the world today," Gore said, Indonesia's Antara news agency reports.
"And Indonesia could be a superpower of geothermal electricity. With the new regional super grids that are being proposed on every continent, it can be a significant advance for Indonesia's economy."
Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy, claims about 40 percent of the world's geothermal reserves.
By 2020, the Indonesian government wants to provide electricity access to 90 percent of its population; about 65 percent currently have access.
Last March Indonesia's energy and mineral resources ministry revised the country's geothermal potential to 28,100 megawatts, up from 27,000 megawatts a decade ago.
The ministry's geological agency said that with 30 years of operation, Indonesia's revised geothermal potential was equal to 12 billion barrels of oil. That compares with the country's current oil reserves of 6.4 billion barrels.
Under Indonesia's national energy policy, the government aims to obtain 95,000 megawatts of power from geothermal sources by 2025. Less than 1,200 megawatts of geothermal energy has been explored.
Because of their dependence on agriculture and limited resources, developing countries in the Asia-Pacific area are more vulnerable to climate changes, yet the region has many opportunities to deal with the issue, Gore said.
During the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December 2009, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono announced plans to voluntarily cut emissions by 26 percent by 2020.
Gore praised Yudhoyono's Copenhagen initiative, saying that the president had spoken at a time when no other leader of the Group of 77 nations -- a coalition of developing nations -- was willing to step up and make such a commitment.

Happy Earth Day, everybody! Just when we thought our faith in the drunkards had been restored, we spotted this disaster area left behind after throngs of Marina District revelers took their overconsumption outdoors yesterday afternoon. After a brief stop at the Marina Dateway, where the neighborhood grocery store was experiencing a run on domestic beer and ladies were overheard discussing the caloric content of various vodkas, we found this scene on the grass at Fort Mason around 7 p.m. Saturday evening.
What looked something like this during the afternoon, by sunset looked like a good place to catch Hepatitis. That's also when the seagulls started swooping in, probably looking for beer can rings to choke themselves to death with. (Because of how disappointed in humanity they were.)
Not to get all hippie-preachy or anything, but this is kind of an offensive amount of trash, right? Do normal and reasonable human beings not look at that mess and say, "...maybe we ought to like, I don't know? Take some of this trash with us? To a trash can?" or "Maybe we should bring that coffee table back home?" We've seen our share of litter-y days in Dolores Park and some embarrassing trash pileups in Golden Gate Park, but leaving actual pieces of living room furniture is a whole new level of prickish park use.

I have been a CurrentTV fan, an avid watcher and even participator since the beginning. I was one of the first people wearing my CurrentTV shirt and other "swag" they sent me for being such an active member. But when CurrentTV decided to trash their amazing user-generated content, it lost a lot of its appeal to me. I still watched certain shows and reports, and reporters, but it wasn't the same and I stopped being such an active member here in favor of other sites and threads.
Then CurrentTV did the best thing they could have in their quest to spread truth, they hired Keith Olbermann. Now i'm not gonna sit here and debate the facts and fictions of this argument of his dissmisal. I for one was upset with how often Olbermann was not on tv due to health issues, but I understood. Hell, his fill-in hosts were never that bad. Mr. Olbermann did a great job with what he was given, very low viewership on the channel as a whole, many cable companies not even carrying currentTV, unpaid bills, faulty graphic and technical issues and a set that broke mid-broadcast never to be repaird. He was then left with nothing but a black background in an empty studio. Still every weeknight there he was, to bring us the truth and fight for what most of us know is right and just.
No one on TV was covering #OWS in the begging, but Keith was. He was there from the beginning providing a fair and balanced opinion with tons of F A C T S!!! Then they brought in a bunch of nobodies to supplement him. Most of these hosts just don't have what it takes to keep a program such as theirs successful long-term, let alone short term. Hell most of their viewers were from K.O. viewers anyway. So now their numbers are plummeting.
So CurrentTV has gone and trashed their biggest asset, just like their user-generated content shows..... Oh and Who did they replace him with? A disgraced NY Governor. (thats a whole other topic in itself)
So once again, here we are again, CurrentTV taking two steps forward, and five steps back....then shooting itself in the foot again. Al Gore, a man I respected and held in high esteem, please stop making these stupid mistakes. Hyatt, you too!
STOP treating CurrentTV like every other capitalistic endeavor that anyone has been a part of and maybe start using the ideals and beliefs you claim to have, and actually reflect that in your programing and actions. You want to fill in some time, give the viewer generated content shows back...Hire people who are respected and are good at their job like Keith Olbermann, Rachael Maddow, and etc... Stop taking 2 steps forward and 5 steps back and TOGETHER WE CAN ACTUALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE! ISN"T THAT WHAT CURRENTTV WAS ALL ABOUT? INFORMING PEOPLE AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR THE BETTER???

"We conclude that the recent decline of Arctic sea ice has played a critical role in recent cold and snowy winters."
Well there you have it. The scientist claim it so it is true. A true excersise in orwellian doublethink.
***
Scientists have tied the rapid decline of Arctic sea ice, caused by global warming pollution, to the recent extreme winters that hit the United States last year and Europe this year. In “Impact of declining Arctic sea ice on winter snowfall,” a new report published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Sea ice decline is contributing to catastrophic, deadly winters in two ways, the researchers find. The loss of ice changes wind patterns over the northern oceans, which in turn disrupts the jet stream, allowing cold polar air to plunge across the northern hemisphere. “If there is a dramatic loss of Arctic sea ice, the westerly winds that blow across the North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans are weakened,” lead author Jiping Liu, a senior research scientist at the Georgia Institute of Technology, told Climatewire. “This means we will have a wavier jet stream.”
The loss of ice and warmer temperatures mean that there is much more evaporation from the Arctic Ocean, leading to a higher moisture content in the polar air that is pulled south. That means that intense snowfall is more likely, especially as the polar air collides with warm, moist air from the south."We conclude that the recent decline of Arctic sea ice has played a critical role... more

The world's greatest snow-capped peaks, which run in a chain from the Himalayas to Tian Shan on the border of China and Kyrgyzstan, have lost no ice over the last decade, new research shows.
The discovery has stunned scientists, who had believed that around 50bn tonnes of meltwater were being shed each year and not being replaced by new snowfall.
The study is the first to survey all the world's icecaps and glaciers and was made possible by the use of satellite data. Overall, the contribution of melting ice outside the two largest caps – Greenland and Antarctica – is much less then previously estimated, with the lack of ice loss in the Himalayas and the other high peaks of Asia responsible for most of the discrepancy.

This is huge. More than I ever could have possibly imagined. And more is coming in the days ahead! The Bild piece was just the first of a series.
Mark this as the date that Germany’s global warming movement took a massive body blow.
Today, not one, but two of Germany’s most widely read news media published comprehensive skeptical climate science articles in their print and online editions, coinciding with the release of a major climate skeptical book, Die kalte Sonne (The Cold Sun).
Germany has now plunged into raucus discord on the heated topic of climate change
What has set it all off? One of the fathers of Germany’s modern green movement, Professor Dr. Fritz Vahrenholt, a social democrat and green activist, decided to author a climate science skeptical book together with geologist/paleontologist Dr. Sebastian Lüning. Vahrenholt’s skepticism started when he was asked to review an IPCC report on renewable energy. He found hundreds of errors. When he pointed them out, IPCC officials simply brushed them aside. Stunned, he asked himself, “Is this the way they approached the climate assessment reports?”
Vahrenholt decided to do some digging. His colleague Dr. Lüning also gave him a copy of Andrew Montford’s The Hockey Stick Illusion. He was horrified by the sloppiness and deception he found. Well-connected to Hoffmann & Campe, he and Lüning decided to write the book. Die kalte Sonne cites 800 sources and has over 80 charts and figures. It examines and summarizes the latest science.
Conclusion: climate catastrophe is called offThis is huge. More than I ever could have possibly imagined. And more is coming in the... more

The supposed ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming is facing an inconvenient challenge after the release of new temperature data showing the planet has not warmed for the past 15 years.
The figures suggest that we could even be heading for a mini ice age to rival the 70-year temperature drop that saw frost fairs held on the Thames in the 17th Century.
Based on readings from more than 30,000 measuring stations, the data was issued last week without fanfare by the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit. It confirms that the rising trend in world temperatures ended in 1997.
Meanwhile, leading climate scientists yesterday told The Mail on Sunday that, after emitting unusually high levels of energy throughout the 20th Century, the sun is now heading towards a ‘grand minimum’ in its output, threatening cold summers, bitter winters and a shortening of the season available for growing food.
Solar output goes through 11-year cycles, with high numbers of sunspots seen at their peak.
We are now at what should be the peak of what scientists call ‘Cycle 24’ – which is why last week’s solar storm resulted in sightings of the aurora borealis further south than usual. But sunspot numbers are running at less than half those seen during cycle peaks in the 20th Century.
Analysis by experts at NASA and the University of Arizona – derived from magnetic-field measurements 120,000 miles beneath the sun’s surface – suggest that Cycle 25, whose peak is due in 2022, will be a great deal weaker still. The supposed ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming is facing an... more

Former fellow of George Soros’ Open Society and current Stanford University scholar Evgeny Morozov has called on Google and other search engines to become thought crime enforcers, by providing warnings about websites that contain “conspiracy theories” such as the belief, held by a majority of Americans, that global warming is not primarily man-made.
Morozov, whose biography confirms him as a well-connected insider, decries in a Slate piece how the Internet is a useful tool for “People who deny global warming” as well as “the anti-vaccination movement,” calling on Google to provide a “socially responsible curated treatment” that would marginalize such beliefs by amending search results.
His solution is to, “Nudge search engines to take more responsibility for their index and exercise a heavier curatorial control in presenting search results for issues like “global warming” or “vaccination.” Google already has a list of search queries that send most traffic to sites that trade in pseudoscience and conspiracy theories; why not treat them differently than normal queries? Thus, whenever users are presented with search results that are likely to send them to sites run by pseudoscientists or conspiracy theorists, Google may simply display a huge red banner asking users to exercise caution and check a previously generated list of authoritative resources before making up their minds.”
Morozov describes the potential that such a move will be judged as Google “shilling for Big Pharma or for Al Gore” as “a risk worth taking”.
This represents a similar argument to Cass Sunstein’s “cognitive infiltration,” an effort by Obama’s information czar to slap government warnings on controversial websites (including those claiming that exposure to sunlight is healthy). In a widely derided white paper, Sunstein called for political blogs to be forced to include pop ups that show “a quick argument for a competing view”. He also demanded that taxes be levied on dissenting opinions and even suggested that outright bans on certain thoughts should be enforced.
Giving companies like Google, which has grown to virtually become the gatekeeper of the entire Internet itself and is already engaging in SOPA-like acts of censorship, the power to denote which political and scientific positions are acceptable and which are fringe “conspiracy theories” is an insult to free thinking and smacks of Chinese-style thought control.
Morozov’s argument is also completely undermined by the fact that the two so-called fringe “conspiracy theories” he forwards as being in need of Google’s thought crime control, skepticism about global warming and the dangers of vaccines, are views held by millions of Americans and are not “fringe” at all.
According to the most recent polls, less than half of Americans now believe that global warming is caused by human activity, a number that has been slipping for the past several years.

Transcript of Rick Santorum's climate change talk in Belmont, NH:
Voter: I was wondering how you’ve integrated your financial policies with the findings of current climate change science.
Rick Santorum: The question is on how do I get my policies with climate change science.
I get asked this question a lot, and you look at the data and you can see some change in the climate.
But then again, pick a point in history where you haven’t seen a change in the climate.
The climate does change.
The question is, what is causing the climate to change.
And I think most scientists, in fact, I assume all scientists would agree there are a variety of factors that cause the climate change.
I don’t think any scientist in the world would suggest there isn’t a variety of factors, and I think the vast majority of scientists would say there’s probably a hundred factors that cause the climate to change.
And so why have we decided that this one particular factor, carbon dioxide, is in fact that tip of the tail that wags the entire dog.
Why from a scientific point of view do we make the assertion that this is in fact what is the case when there is a whole lot of other factors out there that could be affecting it?
So, that’s the question.
Some people have very strong feelings that it is that.
There are a lot of other people who don’t.
Here’s the question.
Let’s even assume, for purposes of argument, not that I agree with it, but for purposes of argument, that they are right.
Then what would be a rational response?
Well, if you have a problem and you want to craft something, what should that thing that you’re crafting do?
Solve the problem.
Do any of the proposed solutions put forward by Al Gore and his friends do anything to solve the problem?
Even the scientists who support the theory will admit to you that it doesn’t do anything to solve the problem.
So query, why support the solution, other than you may have some other agenda that may be in place here.
Right?
And let’s go back to what that agenda is.
There’s a common theme that you should be hearing here.
They don’t trust you to allocate resources in a way that they believe is best, and so they want to have a system that forces you to do what they think you should do in running your business and your lives.
Rick Santorum may want to pay a visit to the EPA website, where he will learn that scientists and policy makers have identified a number major greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere by human activities, including methane, nitrous oxide, and flourinated gases.

Thailand may start trading of water derivatives, giving investors a means of hedging against disasters after the nation’s worst floods in almost 70 years, the Securities & Exchange Commission said.
The regulator is studying the possibility of introducing contracts whose value would be linked to rainfall, or the level of water in the nation’s major dams, said Vorapol Socatiyanurak, who started as secretary-general of the SEC in October. He declined to say when trading might begin.
The total face value of global weather-related derivatives grew by 20 percent between 2010 and 2011 to $11.8 billion, according to a May 20 report by the Washington DC-based Weather Risk Management Association. Demand growth was seen in contracts related to rainfall, snow, hurricanes and wind from industries such as agriculture, construction and transport, it said.
The majority of weather contracts are traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. (CME) CME snow contracts, for example, are based on the exchange’s Snowfall Index, a measure of average monthly snowfall in certain U.S. cities. Traders “determine what amount of snowfall would be detrimental to their businesses and take futures or options positions based on that,” the exchange said on its website.
The risk for Thai water derivatives “would be a lack of trading liquidity,” said Joe Vongkitbuncha, head of equity and structured derivatives at Asia Plus Securities Pcl, the nation’s third-biggest stock brokerage by market value. Still, the contracts may be useful to big conglomerates, whose supply chains and manufacturing “rely heavily” on business continuity, and to agricultural businesses, he said.
