KABUL, Afghanistan — In what amounted to a stern pep talk by a nervous partner, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arrived here on Wednesday to exhort President Hamid Karzai and his government to do a better job of cracking down on corruption in Afghanistan.
Mrs. Clinton’s unannounced visit, on the eve of Mr. Karzai’s inauguration to another term, was meant to send a message of American support for his government, after a chaotic election in which he emerged as the winner after charges of rampant ballot stuffing and other fraud.
But Mrs. Clinton said she also planned to press Mr. Karzai for tangible results in tackling other forms of corruption, which many experts cite as one of the key culprits for Afghanistan’s deteriorating security.
“We are asking that they follow through on much of what they previously said, including putting together a credible anti-corruption governmental entity,” Mrs. Clinton said to reporters traveling with her from Beijing, where she had been accompanying President Obama on his tour of Asia.
“They’ve done some work on that, but in our view, not nearly enough to demonstrate a seriousness of purpose to tackle corruption,” she said. “We are concerned about corruption. We obviously think it has an impact on the quality and capacity of governance.”
Mrs. Clinton said she was troubled that Mr. Karzai had named as one of his two vice presidents Marshal Muhammad Fahim, whom American officials believe has been involved in the drug trade, as well as forging a political alliance with General Ahmed Rashid Dostum, a warlord suspected of corruption.
“It certainly raises questions,” she said, noting that the United States would wait to see whether Mr. Karzai confronted that issue directly or sought other means to raise confidence in his government.
Still, speaking to diplomats at the United States embassy after her arrival, Mrs. Clinton said that the inauguration provided a “window of opportunity” for Mr. Karzai to “make a new compact with the people of Afghanistan” and to create a more accountable government.

As Sarah Palin braces for a fresh round attacks linked to her book release—and Hillary Clinton returns from a bruising trip to Pakistan—Meghan McCain says the media’s constant bullying of women leaders is scaring young women away from politics.
I have admired Hillary Clinton for years. Though we disagree on nearly everything politically, I respect the barriers she has broken as a woman in American politics, and what she’s had to go through to get there. Those “18 million cracks in the glass ceiling” will hopefully make other women’s journeys in politics easier in the future, but sometimes I am not so sure.

After we posted this video last week, we learned of the tragedy at Ft. Hood in Texas. We immediately pulled the video and edited the BACKLINE episode due the sensitive nature of what happened. We wanted all the WHACKO-TV viewers to understand, we didn't water down the message in this new show, but we did take out some rather foreshadowing comments in the piece. We apologize for Wolf Douglas, who at times, is less than a journalist. After we posted this video last week, we learned of the tragedy at Ft. Hood in Texas.... more

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was met with hostile opposition during her recent visit to Pakistan. if you’re not an Obama acolyte and need some motivation to watch another one, imagine By The People: The Election of Barack Obama more like Rocky. Except Hillary Clinton is Apollo Creed and Barack Obama is played by Sylvester Stallone (who reportedly had to lose 175 pounds and wear baggy clothes for the role). The major difference, Barack Obama didn’t lose while getting the crap kicked out of him. He won and barely got a bruise.

According to a new book by campaign manager David Plouffe, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama seriously considered Hilary Clinton for Vice President. In the end Obama sided with Senator Joe Biden saying, "I think Bill may be too big a complication. If I picked her, my concern is that there would be more than two of us in the relationship."

Just when you think those that run our country have experience to do a good job, to provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare, along comes the status quo-which happens to be greed and money and power.
Nobody can overturn the money changers tables alone. Well Jesus did.
If we don't pay attention to the warnings and the warners....
October 20th, 2009 on Frontline is a chance to learn about how we got in this financial crisis. Just maybe then we can do something to avert it from happening again, if we can get experienced, conscious and conscience Americans to provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare of our country.Just when you think those that run our country have experience to do a good job, to... more

It was not quite the tempest triggered by John Lennon claiming in 1966 that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. But the Gallup Poll got the winds racing through the world's TV studios Thursday with a new survey headlined, "Hillary Clinton Now More Popular Than Barack Obama." According to the Gallup numbers, 62 percent of the voters view Clinton favorably while Obama's thumbs-up rating is down to 56 percent.
The woman who ran for president as "Hillary" with no last name needed has become about as noncontroversial as, say, Meryl Streep. When she pops into view, she is generally talking about issues that unite Americans such as toughening international sanctions against Iran and punishing rapists in the Congo. Depicted in the press as one of the administration's stay-the-course hawks on Afghanistan, she has undoubtedly confounded conservatives who were convinced that her foreign policy views were a little to the left of Hugo Chavez's. Even her one sharp-edged moment in the Cabinet (responding to a student questioner in Africa by snapping, "My husband is not the secretary of state. I am.") underscored her independence from the former president.
If there is a larger moral here, it is the virtue of resilience. Aside from Al Gore and maybe John Kerry, there is no living political figure who came closer than Hillary Clinton to being president. As Elaine Kamarck, a former top adviser to Gore who teaches at Harvard's Kennedy School, points out in her new book Primary Politics, Clinton had a delegate lead over Obama based on the primaries alone. Since 2008 was obviously, in retrospect, a Democratic year, her failure to successfully contest the caucuses probably cost her a four-year lease on the Oval Office. Other losing candidates sulked and disappeared (think of Gore heading to Europe in 2001 and growing a beard). She became secretary of state without any public hint of dwelling on the might-have-beens.It was not quite the tempest triggered by John Lennon claiming in 1966 that the... more

Speaking with NBC's Ann Curry on Monday morning, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unexpected revelation: She will not run for president again.
"No," she said with a laugh, responding directly to a question regarding her political aspirations. "This is a great job, it is a 24/7 job and I'm looking forward to retirement at some point."
"Clinton, who will turn 62 at the end of the month, would be nearing 70 by the time of the 2016 election, the next in which President Obama is not expected to run," The Washington Post noted.Speaking with NBC's Ann Curry on Monday morning, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton... more
