The success of Web 2.0 means everyone can now publish - but at what costs, asks Nick Galvin.
April 15, 2009: A 96-strong symphony orchestra performs to widespread acclaim under the baton of the distinguished American conductor Michael Tilson Thomas at Carnegie Hall. The musicians are part of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, the first online collaborative orchestra, and come from 30 countries. They met each other face-to-face only a few days before and have been selected from 3000 players who responded to the open call for entries by submitting a video audition.
May 16, 2009: The Tucson Citizen, Arizona's oldest daily newspaper, produces its last edition after 138 years. In its heyday, the Citizen had a circulation of about 60,000. That number had dwindled to 17,000 by the time its owners, Gannett, pulled the plug. The publisher, Jennifer Boice, pens an emotional open letter in that final edition. "It has been an honour to be a part of the community, invited daily into your homes . . . " she wrote. "Newspapers don't just close, they die. And death is personal."The success of Web 2.0 means everyone can now publish - but at what costs, asks Nick... more

The seeming inconsistency between the perception of being immune from data breach risks with the rapid growth in data breach incidents, led us to think about whether organizations can actually quantify their level of breach risk. Web 2.0 sites that enable people to create content are increasingly used to carry out a wide range of attacks, according to a new security study.
Websense's State of Internet Security" (PDF), released Tuesday, notes that attackers are focusing their attention on interactive Web 2.0 elements. Some 95 percent of user-generated comments on blogs, message boards, and chat rooms are either spam or contain malicious links, the security vendor warned.
"The very aspects of Web 2.0 sites that have made them so revolutionary--the dynamic nature of content on the sites, the ability for anyone to easily create and post content, and the trust that users have for others in their online networks--are the same characteristics that radically raise the potential for abuse," Websense said in its report.
Web 2.0 sites, the company added, comprise "many" of the most visited sites on the Internet. The top 100 most visited Web properties, tended to be classified as social-networking or search sites. Nearly half, or over 47 percent, of the top 100 Web sites support user-generated content.Web 2.0 sites that enable people to create content are increasingly used to carry out... more
Social networking site Facebook (like it needs an introduction!) now has over 300 million users worldwide. Not just that but, for the first time ever in its history, it's actually making enough money to cover its costs.
The site had only 100 million users this time last year. I'm no mathmatician, statistician or an electrician but that seems like a hell of a lot of growth. Y'know, like 3X or something.
