Live: Odd Future Berate All The Old, Ugly Bloggers At Santos Party House

Well, that was hostile. You will all have your own highlights from this, the second live NYC appearance from everyone's favorite stupendously inappropriate underage L.A. rap collective, but as for me and my house, we'll stick with the latest chapter in mastermind Tyler the Creator's ongoing compendium of asthma humor. "Who the fuck got asthma here?" he demands, toward the end of this bruising, seething, intermittently thrilling hour-long affair, when we're all indeed out of breath, emotionally if not physically. He holds up an inhaler and starts howling like a baby: "SWAAAAAAAG! SWAAAAAAAAG!" We laugh. We are grateful for the chance. These guys are not funny in the traditional sense. Seconds earlier, Tyler had introduced a new song with "I plan on getting on Bill O'Reilly and having a bunch of white parents hate me for this motherfucker"; seconds later, he notes, "I just wanna slap the fuck out of all parents, and bloggers, and fuckin' ugly people." The guy knows his demo.

Quoting these guys swearing a lot is basically my role here. This show is in all likelihood less absurd and more logically structured than OF's first local gig, at Webster Hall's Studio in November, but that's relative; the personnel tonight is whittled down to Domo Genesis (disarmingly cheerful), Hodgy Beats (pint-size, hilariously combative, openly contemptuous of "the old people in the back"), Left Brain (no impression), and your DJ, Syd, who looks, like, 12. Oh, and Tyler, of course, towering over everyone. He takes the stage in a hoodie with "Fuck the Greater Good" emblazoned on the back, screams "Who the fuck invited Mr. I Don't Give a Fuck?", stops the song, kicks all the photographers offstage, disappears, waits until the song restarts, and then bursts out to scream, "Who the fuck invited Mr. I Don't Give a Fuck?" again. He does not comport himself like a guy on Vampire Weekend's label. He's wearing knee-high striped socks. His voice is a bloody, serrated rasp. His frequent, ferocious stage dives are expressly designed to encourage lawsuits. It's great.

This weekend in London: Bands work the turntables at the Old Queen's Head, Plastic People and Proud

Story by John Power, le cool London & Slutty FringePhoto courtesy Be Events Bands playing at being DJs is nothing new, and with record sales the way they are you can't really blame them for pocketing some easy money when they can. Still just because something can be done, it doesn't necessarily mean it should be. So for much the same reason that I wouldn't pay money to see a DJ strap on a guitar and murder 'Smoke On The Water', it's fair to say that I usually have little interest in witnessing the bassist from some long past it brit pop band mime along to a pre-mixed CD. Still as ever there are always exceptions to the rule and as it happens this weekend throws up three club nights featuring bands (or members of) whose relationship with club culture goes beyond turning up, pressing play and trousering a manilla envelope stuffed full of cash. First up we have Castle Donnington's Late of the Pier who aking time out from prepping their new album will stage a takeover of the Old Queen's Head in Islington this Friday. Their debut 'Fantasy Black Channel' was a brilliantly overblown glam stomp and certainly no stranger to the dancefloor, and with various members such as LA Priest's side projects having a distinctly more electronic feel you can be sure that the decks will be in safe hands. Just in case you did need reassuring though they've done the one thing that bands running club nights tend to excel at and brought some friends along for the ride. So alongside the Pier you also get sets from maverick popster Micachu and a mystery guest so special they've been accorded three exclamation marks in the press release. Now, at the time of writing this they were keeping their lips zipped but amateur sleuths out there may want to take a quick look at who runs LOTP's current label, Phantasy, and produced their debut album and then draw your own conclusions... That same night at Plastic People in Shoreditch you'll find The Horrors' Joseph Spurgeon holding court at the launch his own night, Wispa. The past twelve months have seen The Horrors reinvent themselves dramatically with 2009's acclaimed Primary Colours and busy themselves with various side-projects, remixes and DJ appearances at some of London's best clubs like Cocadisco. Judging by the night's line-up Spurgeon certainly knows his stuff and the venue's dark, intimate dancefloor and much loved soundsystem should provide the perfect location to indulge in some serious acidic beeps, techno beats and dubstep bass from the likes of Detroit's James Cotton, DFA's Capracara, Cherrystones and of course Coffin Joe himself. Finally on Saturday it's the turn of Eel Pie Island's finest, Mystery Jets, to leave the instruments at home and dig out their records instead. They'll be guesting at the ever busy Be presents... at Proud in Camden, and judging by the fact that this is about their 5th appearance in the club's 3 and a bit years it's fair to say that they must be doing something right. As ever with Be expect a mish mash of indie, electro and disco and completing the night's lineup are a trio of international acts doing what they generally do best, play live. So get there early to avoid the long queues at this ever popular clubnight and catch sets from the likes of Australian electro punk tearaways Teenagersintokyo, French electro poppers KiT and best of all New York's Jessica 6, more familiar to the world at large as part of Hercules & Love Affair. Importantly though whilst we are willing to make an occasional exception for bands moonlighting behind the decks, let's be clear that's where we draw a line in the sand and our strict blanket ban on nights that involve the daughters of aged rockers, soap actors, models, footballers, Big Brother 'stars' and most importantly all past, present and future T4 presenters remains firmly intact. London club review: Catch

The rise and fall of Shoreditch as London’s prime clubbing location has been a well-observed process; a scene built on a home-made attitude to fun, adored by the fashionable crowd, it eventually shouted so loudly about its own fabulousness that the hordes descended. Old Street on the weekend is not a great place to be. Abashed but not broken, the club kids migrated North and East, and now much of the good stuff is to be found in Mile End and Dalston. The venues of Shoreditch remain however, and when they’re not entertaining the masses with Music To Drink Stella To and special offers on shots of colourful pre-vom, more than a few are feeling the pinch, with empty bars and quiet nights evident.
Catch is one of the oldest standards of Shoreditch geography, and one of the few still trying to cater to the original Shoreditch set. Although I’ve been thrown out of there a few times on weekends when people were causing me trouble, their mon-fri line-up generally offers a few treats, and more often than not, these nights are the ones the cool, hip and trend-setting folks of the neighbourhood flock to. A Rebours is one such night, held upstairs on a Thursday once a month; loosely based around a different theme each month, by midnight it is inevitably packed with an indeterminately young crowd, and while black is the prominent colour, the clubnight is a few million miles from the goth and metal nights of Camden. It sits on that curious cultural boundary between trying to be fashionable and being what will be fashionable next. It is like being in a time bubble, the boundaries between retro and now have blurred, nobody takes it too seriously but it still seems important – right now anyway, until the next thing comes along.

Cocaine Mafia: Coke's huge market in Europe and the African supply chain that gets it there

I grew up hearing about Colombian drug cartels dumping huge amounts of cocaine into the United States to feed America’s insatiable craving for the fine white powder that made entertainers and socialites feel amazingly cool. Our government went to war against drugs with billions of dollars and helicopters, social programs and guns. Eventually, for lots of reasons, cocaine use trailed off in the United States. In recent years the drug lords have seen their trade route through the Caribbean produce fewer mansions, private armies and the lifestyle of kings. But they found a new market.

In recent years, Europe has been consuming more cocaine than anywhere else in the world. So I headed there to find out how all that coke was getting into Europe.

Unlike the US, where coke was associated with high rollers and the rich and famous, cocaine today is the European everyman’s drug. We found it in pubs in England, public bathrooms in Italy and wherever young people gather to have a good time. The UK, Italy, and Spain have become the largest consumers of cocaine in the world. The bulk of it still comes from South America, but the trade route has changed. In order to meet their growing demand, South American drug lords use West Africa as their crucial transit point to get the drug into the European Union. With chronic poverty, rampant corruption and loose borders, parts of West Africa have proved to be willing partners in flooding Europe with drugs.

I tracked the drug at one point to a South American drug trafficker who’d settled in Guinea Bissau, but I had to find out where it was going from there. My producer, Joanne, and I traveled to southern Italy, where we heard smugglers gained easy access to the European continent. When we reached the tiny town of Castel Volturno, one of the largest cocaine trafficking hubs in Europe, we felt as if we had stumbled into an African slum.

Castel Volturno is a notoriously lawless town, overwhelmed with poor immigrants and controlled by the local mafia. I’ve reported from a lot of hot spots in the world, but Castel Volturno oozes with a special eeriness. We were searching for a drug trade that was practically invisible, but all the time we could feel the watchful eye of the Camorra, the local mafia, whenever we moved. People were often afraid to talk to us about cocaine or who was running the place, but we pursued every angle we could while our unseen targets watched us.
