Let’s get the hoary ol’ cliche out of the way right off: sex sells. That’s a formula relied upon by anyone involved in the media — including podcast producers hoping to up their hit counts (and thus, permit me a moment to address the search engines directly: sex, sex, sexity, sex, sex, sex. And, in conclusion, boobies) — and it’s certainly something wholeheartedly embraced by the practitioners of burlesque. Thing is, as revealed by director Deirdre Timmons in her new documentary, A WINK AND A SMILE, contemporary burlesque has started throwing a little post-modern self-awareness into the stew, making performances both the rip-roarin’ celebrations of undulating flesh they always were, and more knowing send-ups of the self-same celebrations, calling into question notions of beauty, eros, and the proper deployment of brightly dyed feathers.
Fortunately, Timmons — who herself has spent some time strutting the stage — knows enough to balance her doc’s intellect with the stuff that gets the (fully clothed) butts into the seats: performances that range from the genuinely erotic to the raucously satirical (better brace yourself for Ernie von Schmaltz, a cross-dressing female performer who flaunts a prosthetic pot-belly and prodigious faux chest hair). Come for boobs, hang around for the brains — now that’s what I call a full-service documentary.

A pair of feminist performance artists have been out on the streets flashing their merkins (pube wigs) to make a political statement. Sinead King and Katie O'Brien say they're frustrated by the lack of feminist debate these days among young women and the wider public as well. So they set out to draw attention to themselves and their cause, and start asking their own questions... They are the Muffia, and they want to know "Why don't we resent the way the media portrays women? Does no one care that women are mutilating themselves with cosmetic surgery? Why do so few young women know what feminism is?"
Do you think such performance art is a positive way to spread the feminist movement?A pair of feminist performance artists have been out on the streets flashing their... more

Usually nice and moderate American actress, performance artist, activist,(sri lankan-american actress) Thushari Jayasekera turns trouble maker on youtube as she gives a piece of her mind to FOX chairman Peter Chernin who has made a statement that there will be no residuals & no fair negotiations on healthcare & pension for SAG. This is support of all the SAG members who are rallying. She attended the Wed. March 4th, 2009 rally organized by actor Scott Wilson, along with the Hollywood Wild Bunch, Dan Kelpine, Ed Asner & others and saw a sign that intensified her upset which was false advertising by FOX which read "FOX Gives" in philanthropy' well then actors will line up to get some of what they are giving.
On early Wed. 4th, she called the studio and Mr. Chernin directly to campaign for a fair deal as an effort to create awareness for actor's plight but she was routed to a message machine and she left a polite and pleasant message expressing her views and concerns as new media-internet was also a broadcast platform and residual agreements should follow for studio generated shows going online.
On the youtube clip, she takes a different turn because "hey its youtube and you can't be just nice on youtube" but keeping true to her range of style she manages to keep some humor in because "well i never met the chairman but saw a picture of him for the first time on a picket later that day- he seems kinda cute."Usually nice and moderate American actress, performance artist, activist,(sri... more

"Art takes total commitment, but few artists maintain it around the clock. An exception is the Taiwanese-born performance artist Tehching Hsieh (pronounced dur-ching shay), specifically, the five, grueling one-year pieces he executed, mostly in New York, from 1978 to 1986. Their subject and material was time itself.
The Museum of Modern Art is devoting a small, gripping exhibition to the documentation of “Cage Piece” (1978-79), the first of Mr. Hsieh’s One Year Performances. It entailed spending a year in near-solitary confinement in a cell-like cage doing absolutely nothing. The show makes an altogether apt debut for the Modern’s new series of project exhibitions devoted to performance art. Few pieces communicate the medium’s potential and its demands in such a basic, resonant way.""Art takes total commitment, but few artists maintain it around the clock. An... more

Radio Picture Pod (c) Live Jelly 2009
Commentating Opinionator: T-Girl
This is created by a Thushari
We couldnt resist making a lil sketchady pod in response to an article about a marriage between President and the people. It was linked to an article link posted by Mr. Smiley on twitter. (all mighty twitter)
we make fun gently kind sketchady cause we suport our pres & free speech. it is symbolic
used some stuff that was written on our jellynoose twitter pod some text by ad & nvm some of my own ideas too. its kinda amateurish but there were no rehearsals
might get beter after few more pods of its kind.dont laugh at me laugh with me.
BV-editing
we wil never make fun of our guiding leader mean spiritedly after all we were 1 among many who proclaimed his safe arrival to the nuptials
*and just like our hero Stephen Colbert we will copyright and trademark new twists in words that we make. in this pod, note new ways of using some words. and never ever use sketchady or skedchadist or sketchadians without paying us$775 .
And Mr. Limbaugh note the Presidential Office has a new defender! caus its like that!
We hope to follow in our own footsteps: but just to give you a feel of what this pod taste like think of it as a simple village girl, originating from a small land, who is not too bright growing up in America to develop some sort of boopish style embedding a layer of jessicasimpsonesque essense with a dash of Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert and a tsp of Limbaugher then combining with a pinch of Carlos Mencia. (on second thought don't know if we should say with a dash of daily show and colbert report writers etc;-)
But this is in our own jelly flavored style.Radio Picture Pod (c) Live Jelly 2009

a photo from upcoming ad campaign-not so secretly leaked at: http://www.angelfire.com/film/livejelly/adc.jpg
an American actress Thushari, who only a few had heard of thus far & who is in an upcoming global ad campaign, called some credit card companies that she had cards with and told them her payments will be late, due to lack of acting employment or consistent income flow at the end of the year. She also asked for reduction rates for the high interest cards & that she will pay off whatever amount she can.
She yelled to Live Jelly that, "Considering the current lack of acting work for me in film, commercials & tv, it was the responsible thing to do under the circumstances." She, also, submitted to some temp agencies & other employment & started to write more contreversial blogs. She further blabbers on that," I have plenty of performance arts pieces, sketch & stage stuff that I can do but no self generating income from it but will keep practicing my craft for the sake of my art." She further states with confidenence and hopeful whimsy, "I know I will get hired more in 2009(than 2 one day jobs this year in film/tv & 3 stage pieces) & I m sure to get a steady union gig"
She told Live Jelly that her parents taught her to pay her bills if possible on time & if not work out a fair solution that is beneficial to both sides. The fact that she purchased items using the cards & the companies had given her credit to do so demands that she keeps her agreement with them.
**We agree with our fellow part-time contributor to LJ: all these callings & taking positive action probably beats being under financial pressure, depressed & no way out.a photo from upcoming ad campaign-not so secretly leaked at:... more

Some videos you just have to see to believe. On Thursday, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin appeared in Wasilla in order to pardon a local turkey in anticipation of Thanksgiving. This proved to be a slightly absurd but ultimately unremarkable event. But what came next was positively surreal. After the pardon Palin proceeded to do an interview with a local TV station while the turkeys were being SLAUGHTERED in the background!! Seemingly oblivious to the gruesomeness going on over her shoulder, she carries on talking for over three minutes. Watch the video below to see for yourself. Be warned, it's kind of gruesome. Some videos you just have to see to believe. On Thursday, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin... more

I knew of The Steve Lady years before he became known as The Steve Lady, if you call cowering with wide eyes and curiosity as he elegantly sauntered past you with a pair of his closest friends at the End-up to their familiar spot at the bar like they had just burst out of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. No, I wouldn’t say I really knew him as much as I was intrigued and intimidated by this aura of glamour he and his friends exuded when they walked in a room. I assumed all sorts of things about the trio, like they were descendents of some old world aristocracy, blue bloods educated in European boarding schools who had parents like Dianne Von Furstenberg or Aristotle Onassis and visited the French Riviera annually. They seemed to be the type who had definitely flown on the Concorde many times, so high, so fast, so first class. Steven was quite tall, and the slender lines of his physique just screamed for high couture to be draped upon him: broad shoulders, small waist, those super-model hips jutting forward from his body, sharp enough to cut, and his chin and cheekbones and the intensity of his large eyes, burning like lasers with a hundred yard stare, and that subtle sneer, somewhere between a smile and disdain. He didn’t just walk into a room so much as slice his way through. He frightened me so I never really met or spoke to him for years. One Halloween he dressed up as Cruella Deville from 101 Dalmatians and that was the first foreshadow of the magic yet to come. He was shockingly complete—a dead on likeness of the animated uber villain.
Over the years of consistent nightclubbing through the eighties and early nineties when everyone knew without a doubt where they would be spending their Saturdays and Sunday nights out (Product and Uranus and Klubstitute and Dragstrip to name a few), every time I saw The Steve Lady he looked devastating. His sense of style never adhered to anything over-wrought or campy or from the drag bins. He recognized the power of simplicity and would always choose a look that landed well off the beaten path of drag kitsch and more from the pages of Vogue magazine, fashion period history, specific works by celebrated photographers like Helmut Newton, or imagery from film makers like David Lynch or even Abstract Expressionist German theater and modern Performance Artists. His looks were always high concept, using his vast knowledge of art and enduring images of beauty like a palette of paints to create his unique and elegant forays. He appeared as a force of visual perfection that would humble great beauties throughout history and take your breath away time and time again. He had vision and plans unyielding to any limitations or doubts until as always perfection prevailed.

"You for Office"
Now you too can deliver the great rhetoric filled speeches of today's most important politicians. Why settle with hearing politicians when Politaoke allows you to become them. Politaoke, an audience participatory political karaoke bar, changes the face of politics and karaoke by allowing audience members to take on the role of political leaders. Who needs American Idol when you could be a presidential candidate?
Politaoke made its US debut at the Hallwalls Center for Contemporary Art in Buffalo New York as part of the Infringement Festival and toured across the US in cities across the country from July 30th until now. Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival will be the final stop on this Summer "Whistle Stop" Tour. First performed in January 2008 in Germany, Politaoke has been expanded to include speeches, interviews and other appearances by American politicians currently in and running for office.
Politaoke provides the audience a platform to perform, mock and finally hear and see clearly what their politicians say. Completely nonpartisan, Politaoke allows the audience to decide how to interpret each politician's words, whether serious or in a sarcastic manner. The politician's speeches and interviews are provided, word for word, only edited into sections (songs) of 1 - 8 minutes. A series of debates, interviews and television appearances are also provided as duets.
Created by Diana Arce, Politaoke is a natural progression in her (in person) work as an artist, filmmaker and activist, who is interested in using artistic methods as a platform to engage in political and cultural critique and commentary in the public realm. Much of her work stems not only from her personal experience, but also from contemporary politics, economics and news. She is also notorious for her prize-winning karaoke performance at Pan Am Lounge in Berlin.
Politaoke will run daily September 26-28th from 7-9PM every half hour on the free Water Taxi at the Fulton Ferry Landing.

Few artists can say they created a painting while free falling from an airplane. For 25-year-old action artist Matt Cheney, it’s all in a day’s work. Though it may seem unconventional, action sports are as much a form of artistic expression as they are competitive sports. And Cheney has further explored the idea of action sports as art by integrating activities like snowboarding, skateboarding and skydiving with oil painting. Here’s how…
Cheney’s action art is inspired by abstract painters like Jackson Pollock and Saburo Murakami who defined action painting during the abstract expressionist movement of the Post WWII era. Intrigued by the performative nature of action painting, Cheney uses various action sports (which he loves) to create the movement behind his work. Working with a crew of several people, Cheney uses video cameras and still photography to document the visual experience of his paintings. “The whole process for how it’s done, from the oil paints to mixing the pigments and thinking about the composition, is free spirited and spontaneous. I love the idea of preserving a moment in time.” For his senior project at the Art Institute of Boston, Cheney built a halfpipe in a studio and created paintings like Pink on Black while skating up and down the halfpipe.
Cheney embarked on his largest scaled painting to date. With the help of Waterville Valley in New Hampshire, he designed a 12’ x 8’ canvas wall ride structure at the base of a jump, which he painted using his snowboard as a big palette knife.
