Shyne Speaks For First Time Since Release

On Monday, just days after former Bad Boy artist Shyne was deported to Belize ater a nine year prison sentence [click to read], the rapper is finally speaking up. However, his first words have not been given directly to the media, but to the students of the high school he once attended, Wesley College. Shyne, who has recently changed his name from Jamal Barrow to Moses Michael Levly, explained that he has not converted to Judaism as commonly reported, but that he now looks to Biblical figures for inspiration.

"In life, you are what you are and this is what I am," he said. "I don't want to be like Michael Jordan. I want to be like Moses or King David or King Solomon. Those are the guys I aspire to be like. I didn't want to be like the kingpin on my block; I wanted to be like the guy who parted the sea, that's why I chose that name."

He also spoke about the importance of education, encouraging Wesley's students to avoid the lure of street life. He used himself as an example of what could happen if children took that path.

"I came up on the streets with guys that gangbanged and were into criminal activity, and those tools never worked," he said. "Those tools, you either end up spending the rest of your life in prison or sleeping in a grave. But with the tools that you are getting here as far as education is concerned, that is the ultimate tool and with that tool you can transcend any situation because I am just like you. I grew up on Curassow Street. When I was coming up we didn't even have toilets. But one of the things my Uncle Finnegan and my father, Prime Minister Barrow, implored upon me was education, education, education, education.

"What I do have to say is not, 'Listen man, I am on a gangster roll,'" he continued. "No, listen: Look what gangster roll got me. Look where it led me. And I am not telling you what to do because I am not a preacher and I am not everybody's father, but I am exhibit A of what's going to happen if you don't stay in Wesley College. If you don't go to that sixth form, if you don't try to go to the university you're going to spend the rest of your life in the cooker or you're going to be in the grave. That is what this is about."

DX News Bits: Hip Hop Diploma, Immortal Technique

A Midwest college has expanded their diploma program to include a degree in Hip Hop Studies, which is a first of its kind.

McNally Smith College of Music, located in St. Paul, Minnesota, added a three-semester program this year that allows students to not only learn about the art form through studying its history, but also through performance in emceeing, deejaying, and drumming.

While a supporter, College President Harry Chalmiers stated the move may worry some scholars. “There are people who might say, ‘If you have Hip Hop in a college, isn't that almost a contradiction in terms?’” he told CNN.com.

However, seeing the potential of a music genre that includes different cultural aspects, Chalmiers continued, “When we look at Hip Hop closely, we see that we can study its impact on people's lives, on society. Where does this music come from? When it's angry, when it's sometimes vicious, vile or rude, why is that? What are people trying to say? These are important questions to ask.”

Faculty member Kevin Washington compared the possible backlash of Hip Hop being taught in schools to that of another musical genre. “Jazz started like Hip Hop -- out of the urban neighborhoods, black neighborhoods. There was a language, there was clothing, there was a style that everybody started copying. So when they started putting jazz in schools, there was controversy at first…I felt that we [are] in the same situation with that.”

In other news, the Hip Hop Chess Federation has teamed up with Immortal Technique [click to read] to teach teenagers about the rising violence occurring in the San Francisco Mission District.

Along with the Brown Berets of Watsonville, Technique will speak to John O’Connell High School students this Friday concerning violence within the Latino community, and what actions they can take to prevent it from spreading.

“Immortal Technique is a Hip Hop artist who has a special place in the hearts of Latino youth. John O'Connell High Schools faculty and staff have always been proactive in their approach to keeping their students effectively informed. We're honored to have Immortal Technique and the Brown Berets share their ideas on the best moves we can all make, to reach an authentic and enduring peace on these streets,” Adisa Banjoko, CEO of HHCF said in a press statement.

Dame Dash Speaks On Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel

Dame Dash is no stranger to beef - and certainly no stranger to beefing with Jay-Z. Compounded by the fact that his name popped up amongst the drama between Jay and former Roc-A-Fella artist Beanie Sigel [click to read], it's no surprise Dash weighed in on the matter.

“Him and the licensee who licensed Roc-A-Wear went behind my back and obtained the license to the company that was licensing PRO-Keds and stopped making the State Property PRO-Keds,” said Sigel regarding Dash on Philadelphia radio station Power 99. “It was all geared towards Roc-A-Wear.”

In a brief interview with MTV, Dame declined to discuss any specifics regarding Sigel. He did, however, express his regret at the situation.

“I love Jay, I love Beans — what’s the reason for beef?” said Dash. “That’s stupid. What’s the reason for beef? People die, people don’t feel good — I want people to laugh. What’s up, y’all?”

Dame also revealed his initial reaction to Sigel's accusations on the radio. “I was surprised. I was hurt for him, more or less, because I know that ain’t him,” explained Dash. “But I don’t want to speak on that. Whatever [Beanie's] going through where he’s got to do that … I could understand where he may look at things and feel that way. I can see that. He’s probably got a lot of people around him and nobody to really tell him what’s going on. It was a different environment for Roc-A-Fella back then. I feel bad for those cats. I love those cats. I hate that they struggle. I hate it. I hate to see anybody struggle. I don’t embrace that. I’m not one of those dudes that get happy when I hear something bad about somebody I had a bond with. I really loved those dudes. You see Ski down there, I knew Ski for 20 years. That’s my man. Sometimes people have different agendas for why they don’t wanna be my friend. But at the end of the day, I’m always there for them.

HipHopDX: You’re a major humanitarian. So many artists give back by just cutting a check, why was it still so important for you to sink you heels into the dirt and remain hands on with your outreach efforts.
Wyclef Jean: I mean I’m from the hut, to the projects, to the mansion. Like I said, at the end of the day we all gonna go back to the dirt. So you have two choices on Earth: you can either choose to do something and be relevant to the race that comes up after you, or you can just sit around and die with all of the wealth you’ve got. I was always raised on the gift of giving back. That’s just the righteous thing to do.

DX: Would you say that today’s immigrants still experience a level of discrimination upon arriving here in the United States while attempting to integrate into the American way of life or is that factor a thing of the past?
Wyclef Jean: No, it’s definitely not a thing of the past! Immigrants still got it rough. Wherever they’re coming from, there’s always the stereotype and they always have to work very, very hard to over prove themselves.

Hip Hop Album Sales Week Ending 11-1-2009

Michael Jackson will be finishing 2009 at the top of the charts he dominated for so many years. With the release of the documentary of his last days, This Is It, Epic Records, the imprint Jackson sustained throughout the early '80s, has released a soundtrack. Michael Jackson's This Is It Soundtrack debuted at over halfway to platinum. Over three Michael Jackson releases were sprinkled throughout the Top 200 this week, affirming his status as Forbes top-earning dead celebrity, trumping Elvis Presley who reigned in 2007 and 2008.

Jay-Z [click to read] still stayed Top 10 with Blueprint 3 [click to read] as the emcee tours North America. The rapper known for his former battles with Nas, The Game can add onetime protege Beanie Sigel [click to read]. A staple in Jay's Roc-A-Fella Records roster, the South Philadelphia rapper and his mentor have parted ways after Jay reacted to a string of arrested, rumored drug abuse and poor business management on Beanie's part. If the polite interview commentary elevates, Blueprint 3 may become a bigger piece of discussion.

The Black Eyed Peas [click to read] are just a 100,000 units ahead of Jay-Z in overall sales. The E.N.D. [click to read] held rank from last week, after being out for over three months. The California veterans are striking new chords with their latest single "Meet Me Halfway." will.i.am has also been announced as a collaborator on Rihanna's Rated R album.

The biggest surprise on the charts this week was rapper Tech N9ne's [click to read] validation through K.O.D. [click to read]. The Kansas City rapper, who has sold over one million records independently in the course of his career, had a Top 15 debut in the fourth quarter, selling just under 30,000 units. King Of Darkness features strong commentary on religion and spirituality. The release unveils Strange Music's latest roster, including Krizz Kaliko [click to read], Big Scoob, Brotha Lynch Hung [click to read] and Prozak. Veteran New York emcee Bumpy Knuckles (a/k/a Freddie Foxxx [click to read] also appears, as well as Three 6 Mafia [click to read].
