FreeFest is back and tickets have “free’d-out” in just a few minutes, but Virgin Mobile USA, creator of one of the largest and most critically acclaimed music festivals in the country, has announced that music fans need not worry. Those still wanting to attend can volunteer their time with nonprofit organizations fighting youth homelessness in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia to earn a ticket to FreeFest. The campaign is part of The RE*Generation program, Virgin Mobile’s charitable initiative focused on ending youth homelessness.
The FreeFest volunteer program is powered by Causecast's innovative volunteer tracking and rewards technology. Now, volunteering is simple – just select one of the available volunteer opportunities, enter in your participation code after completion via the website or SMS text and redeem earned points for your ticket to FreeFest.
FreeFest is a great example of the impact consumer brands can make when they put their weight behind causes. Our volunteer tracking technology was built for this kind of worthwhile program, and we hope it will inspire other companies to do the same.
Although the festival is free, Virgin Mobile is encouraging donations be made to help provide educational opportunities for homeless youth. Homeless youth organizations working with Virgin Mobile USA include Covenant House, Sasha Bruce Youthwork and StandUp For Kids.

The annual Winter Music Conference in Miami is the single most absorbing event of electronic music dj's, producers, and supporters to take place worldwide. Not to take anything away from the pulsating beats of Ibiza or the sensual beach sounds of Sardegna and Mykonos, but the Conference distinguishes itself from the rest, by being a chance for renowned electronic artists to have their talents recognized through awards, record deals, and a merging of the minds. It is as much business as it is pleasure. All the while, travelers from across the pond and all corners of the North and South Americas pack their bags for the pilgrimage to sun, overpriced drinks, and an experience that in all encompasses the true soul of all things electronic. With little over a week to go until the official conference of 2011 [business], and 3 weeks until the unofficial conference [pleasure], here is a sneak into last year's Eden Roc Hotel Circo Loco party featuring Ibiza regulars Tania Vulcano, Matthias Tanzmann, Lee Burridge, Jamie Jones, Clive Henry, Davide Squillace, Timo Maas, and DJ Sneak. The annual Winter Music Conference in Miami is the single most absorbing event of... more

German media reported that as many as 1.4 million people showed up to the Love Parade, where a mass panic Saturday left 19 people crushed to death and 342 injured. Police blamed organizers and officials in Duisburg, an industrial city that gave the world's largest techno music festival a home after it was driven from Berlin because of noise and overcrowding.
Witnesses, however, blamed police and private security staff, saying the panic broke out after they closed the end of a tunnel – the only entrance to the festival grounds – when the venue became too full. Police denied that and said they actually opened a second exit to disperse the masses before the accident happened.
It remained unclear Sunday what exactly triggered the panic, but it appeared that several people trying to escape the pushing crowds climbed up a steep metal stairway on a ramp in front of the tunnel and fell into the crowd. Amateur video footage showed thousands of festival goers crammed wall to wall, with some trying desperately to climb out.

When I first saw the YouTube video of the Dancing Guy at Sasquatch Music Festival last year I had my doubts about whether or not it was real. But then I soon learned what I was watching was in fact real, organic and completely spontaneous. After I had my story straight, it was then time to talk to the Dancing Guy himself to see exactly how and why he started the massively joyful and inspiring swarm.

Alcohol must have contributed to this huge mistake. A presenter catches the moment at a music festival where a man mistakes a metal basin filled with yellow liquid and soap objects for a place to wash your hands. He realises at the wrong time it's all pee and urinal cakes.Alcohol must have contributed to this huge mistake. A presenter catches the moment at... more

I asked Rod Naber, our very groovy director of online design, to tell me just what was so awesome about the Treasure Island Music Festival, held this past weekend in San Francisco.
Rod went on Sunday. This is what he sent me:
I can’t believe they (literally) bused the whole festival to the island from SF. It was super well-run.
I love Grizzly Bear but they should be playing in a church or something b/c they deserve better acoustics
Acoustics don’t matter when you have lots of horns. Beirut was rad.
It was so small!
I missed the Flaming Lips which was probably a horrible mistake
A bulleted list about a music festival seems wrong.
It is wrong, Rod. But you're very concise, and sometimes (only very occasionally), we like that around here. Here, have a very gorgeously shot video of the Flaming Lips with lousy sound, and here's one with slightly better audio.
Here's a pretty clear shot of the stage as Passion Pit performed "Sleepyhead." They'll be on Current Music Presents: Embedded on November 18.

In July, while on the East Coast for the New Music Seminar in New York, RFWtv made a visit to the Vans Warped Tour stop in New Jersey. We had a chance to chat with creator Kevin Lyman and several artists including Alexisonfire. This five piece band, now in it's 8 year, has purposefully tailored their albums to be different, and continue to find growth as musician with each of their individual, respective side projects. With the release of their album Old Crows/Young Cardinals, the guys prove they can still produce crowd rocking anthems while experimenting effortlessly with sounds and timbre of the instruments and vocals they enjoy. In July, while on the East Coast for the New Music Seminar in New York, RFWtv made a... more
