Why women are leaving men for other women

(OPRAH.COM) -- Lately, a new kind of sisterly love seems to be in the air. In the past few years, Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon left a boyfriend after a decade and a half and started dating a woman (and talked openly about it).

Actress Lindsay Lohan and DJ Samantha Ronson flaunted their relationship from New York to Dubai. Katy Perry's song "I Kissed a Girl" topped the charts. "The L Word," "Work Out," and "Top Chef" are featuring gay women on TV, and there's even talk of a lesbian reality show in the works.

Certainly nothing is new about women having sex with women, but we've arrived at a moment in the popular culture when it all suddenly seems almost fashionable -- or at least, acceptable.

Statistics on how many women have traded boyfriends and husbands for girlfriends are hard to come by. Although the U.S. Census Bureau keeps track of married, divorced, single, and even same-sex partners living together, it doesn't look for the stories behind those numbers.

But experts like Binnie Klein, a Connecticut-based psychotherapist and lecturer in Yale's department of psychiatry, agree that alternative relationships are on the rise.

"It's clear that a change in sexual orientation is imaginable to more people than ever before, and there's more opportunity -- and acceptance -- to cross over the line," says Klein, noting that a half-dozen of her married female patients in the past few years have fallen in love with women. "Most are afraid that if they don't go for it, they'll end up with regrets."

Feminist philosopher Susan Bordo, Ph.D, a professor of English and gender and women's studies at the University of Kentucky and author of "Unbearable Weight: Feminism, Western Culture, and the Body," also agrees that in the current environment, more women may be stepping out of the conventional gender box.

Against all Odds - Mocca Performs in HD.

While some bands go for major contracts other bands prefer the indie path. For other bands the indie path may be all there is. For Arina Ephipania and Riko Prayitno there was graduation from the National Institute of Technology in Bandung, Indonesia, with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Interior Decorating. Instead of Interior Decorating, in 1997 Arina and Riko began a "project" they would later call "Mocca" that would add a pair of product designers, Toma Pratama and Indra Massad to the band. In five years Mocca would release their first album, My Diary, in their home country on an independent label, FFWD Records.

From the start the project appeared in jeopardy. The original band members had walked away. The first written material was not well-received. Arina, fan of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, adapted stage gestures and musical dynamics often found in jazz and folk-dixie tunes that were unusual in Indonesia. Choosing to sing in English instead of Bahasa Indonesia didn't add to the bands chances for success at home.

Regardless, by 2005 Mocca was releasing albums in Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia on indie labels. The albums were backed by international appearances and fans were posting their own music videos of Mocca tunes to Youtube. Today, while fans in America still get only imported CDs on Amazon and downloads on iTunes it isn't hard to find fans in any city, and everywhere else in the world. Until this year it was impossible to find a high quality download of a musical performance. That ended recently when a performance in Seoul, South Korea was downloaded to Youtube in High Definition. The show aired nationally in Korea on "Space at EBS TV Korea".

With millions of media hits on Youtube and iMeem Mocca has become a serious jazz swing contender. The sound is completely fresh and uplifting (Riko calls it "make me optimistic") that it becomes impossible to put down. Riko's songwriting is consistent enough that in three albums and one mini-album that its possible to listen for hours. For me, I find it miraculous how a musical genre made famous by the magic of Frank Sinatra that has been tucked away in a far away place can be brought back to life by a rare combination of gifted and persistent musicians against such odds.
