It's an exhibition to see and to listen to the one that from January 14 to February 3, 2012, the Palazzo Reale in Palermo, the Sicilian Parliament building, dedicates to BIOS Vincent, a young artist from Trapani, who lives and works between China and Italy. "The wall sounds", curated by Martina Cavallarin, is BIOS first solo show in Palermo, expected return in his homeland after the recent artistic experiences in China, in Boston and Berlin.
The exhibition is under the patronage of the Sicilian District, the Sicilian Regional Assembly and the Fondazione Federico II, and promoted by Sicilian Association Promotion, with the contribution of Galleria Affiche Milan and Galleria 71 Palermo. Sponsored by URSA Italy SrL.
THE EXHIBITION
BIOS builds for Palazzo Reale a most unusual path, which runs from the lower floor, where the visitors are greeted by video with the artist's performative acts, to the central hall on the upper floor, where a labyrinthine installation consisting of more than 40 works envelops the visitors in large coils of matter by strong colors that take over and lead to the great wall entirely covered by a work of considerable emotional dimensions.
Facing the panels sprinkled with cement, perforated by bullets of various calibers, Magnum, sinkers, Lupara, and the wall installations with numbers, words, letters, signs violated by a specific and targeted use of firearms, the visitors are carried away by the echo of an invisible firearm shot, of answers ever given, of unexpected gifts, a disillusioned hope or an erased memory.
BIOS looks at the world from the hole inflicted by bullets on its surfaces and its art looks like self-taught, but rather is borrowed from a unique cultural journey from ancient manuscripts such as graphics or medieval literature, engravings, sacred art and an imaginary visionary - says exhibition curator Martina Cavallarin.
BIOS has a personal research that investigates the social dimension focusing on topics such as abortion, ecology, oppression, violence, physical and mental barriers through an art that uses performance - in which the hunters shoot virtually on its prey, a metaphor for excellence, or in which the artist portrays the "Pinocchio" and simulated crucifixions - and wall installations, paintings that becomes sculptures welcoming color, scarification, objects surrounded by numbers like logo - as the 194, a figure that evokes the number of abortion law in Italy - or words, letters written.
"Those of Vincent's are the walls of life, telling the story of men who have lived - writes the architect Michele Premoli Silva who designed the exhibition - Walls that, like those of houses in places of combat or conflict, marked by bursts of bullets that have carved their alphabet, remembering that broken lives. BIOS has chosen to tell the life of the world through the wall".
Accompanies the exhibition a prestigious catalog published by Fondazione Federico II Editore in three languages - Italian | English | Chinese - with critical essays by Martina Cavallarin | Micol Di Veroli | Michele Premoli Silva
THE ARTIST
BIOS Vincent
born in Erice, Trapani, on 24.11.1976

He is currently engaged in the process of environmental installations in which there is the use of renewable energy sources. Since 2000 his work has been exhibited in various solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad.
Lives and works in Milan and China and works with several studies of architecture in the development of projects between art and architecture.

Aside from its rain and coffee, Seattle, Washington is known for many things subversive, from Grunge music to the activist driven WTO riots. This region of America raised the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee. Today, there is a culture here that is only represented anonymously in the reclaimed public spaces of the city. Images dot the urban landscape in the typical street mediums that are used across the globe; spray paint, stickers, paste-ups, stencils, wheatpasting, posters, video projection, art intervention, guerrilla art, flash mobbing, installations, post-graffiti, mosaic tiling, murals, wood-blocking, LED art, reverse-graffiti and yard bombing.
You will see that these are not commercial enterprises or vandalism graffiti, but individual creative statements... something we can all relate to. Street art as a medium has been popularized internationally by the likes of Shepard Fairey, Banksy, D*Face, Paul Insect, Swoon, Twist, Neck face, Faile, Space Invader and WK Interact. It can take on many purposes and sometimes involves activism, phenomenology, repetition, attention capture, culture jamming, direct action, guerrilla messaging, propaganda, subvertising, decoration and territory claiming.
The following is a small window into this temporary world that's constantly being revised in a flux of new symbols. It's a snapshot of work on the Seattle streets over about a 3 year period, a visual capsule in time, not a comprehensive representation of Seattle street art and the people involved over the years. Some of the work only existed for a day before it was written over by other artists or removed by the city... a reminder that nothing is permanent, and control is an illusion in the chaos of a city. Enjoy.

OR - "Where has all the good porn gone / long time passing . . . "
When I was a young teen, porn was quite the precious commodity. You couldn’t just grab your iPhone out of your pocket and go to XXXBigButtHoneysFuckySucky.com and have two women licking each other’s unmentionables at a moments notice. You had to work for it. It came down to either shoplifting it from the local newsagents, finding what used to be known as “forest, or woods porn” (more on this later) or nicking some from your mate’s dad’s stash.
The late 90’s was all about sitting up late at night with SBS on mute, waiting for Weather Woman or Chinese Ghost Stories. That moment where all the waiting was finally rewarded with a brief flash of tit or – no way – is that vag? That moment was always spectacular and well worth the effort.
Let’s travel forward through time a little. . . . .

New Record Price Set for Russell Young's Marilyn Feb 20th, 2011
Last week, Russell Young’s ‘Marilyn Crying,’ from his hugely successful Diamond Dust Collection, was auctioned by Phillips de Pury & Company, and sold for a world record price in London
The Marilyn was incredibly successful at the auction, and amid fierce bidding between 8 collectors eventually sold for $48,000 breaking the previous artist record. Young's previous record for $44,000.
Represented by Guy Hepner, Russell Young’s Marilyn diamond dust pieces are virtually all sold. The diamond dust technique utilized is Young’s work is used by few artists, and creates an incomparable refraction of light that brings his remembered idols to life.
In the 'Marilyn Crying,' painting, Russell Young captures the eternal glamour of old Hollywood, the elegance of an everlasting beauty, and pairs that with a mastering of a unique technique and use of color that has not been matched.

Alex Guofeng Cao Feb 01th, 2011
Alex Guofeng Cao
Alex Guofeng Cao came to New York searching for his pursuit, came upon photography, which easily became his passion. Inspired by such masters as Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Edward Weston, and Robert Mapplethorpe, Cao ceaselessly studied and experimented with all methods and techniques in photography. While adept with color, Cao’s preferred medium is the black and white image. Cao’s deep fascination with the subtle gradations of tone between the deep black and the stark white are the generators for all the colors he needs to create his world.
The most recent body of work by Cao is a series of images of popular culture icons. At a glance almost anyone can identify some if not all of the characters in the menagerie of stars. But, upon closer inspection, one can see that these stars are composed of a constellation of tiny repetitive images each slightly differing from its neighbors. The arrays of miniscule visages that compose and conspire to form the larger portraits are iconic images themselves. The plot thickens as one realizes that there is a play, a dialogue between the chosen characters that inhabit each other.
The method of creation for Cao is really that of composing a mosaic of memories into an impression of the present. Impressed and greatly influenced by the ideal forms and proportions of the iconic and statuesque sculptures of the ancient Egypt, Greek and Roman eras, Cao’s works can be said to have their roots in western antiquity. Another great source of inspiration are impressions from his trip a decade ago of the mosaic floors and walls of Naples and Pompeii. It’s the combination of these two base strategies that allows Caos’ works to take shape.
The images are imposing and arresting to say the least. With their immense dimensions, their presence can be felt from quite a distance away. The powerful oversized main images and the armies of tiny images that compose them are specifically paired to create a dialogue. The histories and backgrounds of each of the characters are pitted against each other. The image of Marilyn Monroe is populated by countless diminutive images of the Mona Lisa. These two women are, arguably, the most famous women in the world. They share an unusual bond in that they are both, in some ways, fictional characters. The pairing also suggests another connection in that they are both fantasies. One is the fantasy of the 20th century and the other is the singular fantasy and imagination of DaVinci.
As one looks closer and closer at the images and scrutinize all the intricate details, one may begin to realize that hidden within the sea of tiny repetitive images are carefully chosen codes and clues that the author inserted in strategic locations, as a reminder of the events and situations in which these characters were involved in history.
In the end, the process of encoding and layering of information of the times is ultimately the goal. As time passes, so does information get deposited into the works. These images undergo evolution and change as time passes, and they bear the marks of a collection of history, as well as the author’s intent.

Andy Warhol's Mao Jan 31th, 2011
Andy Warhol's Mao
Andy Warhol's Mao Tse Tung (1972) is a silk-screen portrait of the Chinese leader that was made in many versions. It is one of the series of silk-screens that he made on the subject of fame. They began in the early 1960s with his many portraits of Marilyn Monroe whose sad death in 1962 led him to contemplation of what it meant to be famous and what it could possibly be worth. The fame of the individuals in these portraits was usually of the Hollywood variety and various representations of Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, and others are among the best known. Usually the different versions employed the same image--sometimes repeatedly within the same piece. In every instance, however, Warhol's method was to use appropriated images. They were usually taken from the press or from Hollywood promotional materials and adapted for the artist's purposes.
In these paintings Warhol also made many points about applying mechanized methods of reproduction to "fine arts," thereby turning fine art into consumer goods. And, by implication, the people in the 'fame' portraits were, in a sense, consumer goods themselves. He called his studio "The Factory" and he and his assistants turned out as many as 80 silk-screens per day. Despite all this emphasis on mechanical reproduction, however, he always preferred the signs of the human touch in the work.

Pop Art Market Stronger Than Ever
Nov 15th, 2010
Last Wednesday evening, November 10th, Christie's New York held an auction of post-war and contemporary art featuring many Guy Hepner artists and recorded oustanding results. Once again, the art world was reminded exactly why the genre was originally deemed 'Popular' art: This past week's showing proved the demand for Pop Art continues to match exactly what is available.
Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, two artists that defined the period, both represented by Guy Hepner, comprised a dominating portion of the lots, and with good reason:
Each work that went to auction by Andy Warhol sold. Warhol's piece, "Big Campbell's Soup Can with Can Opener (Vegetable)," reached an incredible $23,882,500, while his "Marilyn," (pictured below), climbed to $4,450,5000. "Jackie," went for $1,650,500, "Dance Diagram," hit $1,538,500, and "Dennis Hopper," hit $965,500.
Roy Lichtenstein's results were no less impressive. The apathetic red-head in Lichtenstein's "Ohhh...Alright," from 1964 broke a record for the artist at $42,642,500 while one of Lichtenstein's later works, a fragmented thinker, and "Dennis Hopper," hit $965,500.
An insatiable demand for Pop Art exists and continues to expand the contemporary art market.

Warhol Paintings: Flowers
Nov 01th, 2010
Andy Warhol changed art forever. He is an undeniable, defining feature of modern art history, and his work is prized as a pivotal and necessary feature at Guy Hepner. His Flower Paintings series comes late in his life, and offers an expanse of insight into a legend's artistic mind through a seemingly mundane subject.
The idea to paint flowers as the subject of a major series was apparently suggested to Warhol by Henry Geldzahler, then curator at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. To some degree, the pictures belong to a long art historical tradition of still-life painting.
"With the Flowers, Andy was just trying a different subject matter. In a funny way, he was kind of repeating the history of art. It was like, now we're doing my Flower period! Like Monet's water lilies, Van Gogh's flowers, the genre." (Gerard Malanga as cited in A Year in the Life of Andy Warhol, New York 2003, p. 74).
The Flowers paintings followed Warhol's Death and Disaster series of 1962-1963--sensational images of electric chairs, suicides and horrendous car-crashes. While the Flowers can be seen as the vacuous flip-side of this horror and violence, there are some critics who believe that they are still permeated by Warhol's deep obsession with death. "What is incredible about the best of the flower paintings (especially the large ones) is that they present a distillation of much of the strength of Warhol's art--the flash of beauty that suddenly becomes tragic under the viewer's gaze. The garish and brilliantly colored flowers always gravitate toward the surrounding blackness and finally end up in a sea of morbidity. No matter how much one wishes these flowers to remain beautiful they perish under one's gaze, as if haunted by death." (J. Coplans, "Andy Warhol: The Art", Andy Warhol, exh. cat., Pasadena Art Museum, 1970, p.52).

NEW Artist: FC SOFIA
Nov 01th, 2010
Guy Hepner is thrilled to announce the new representation of Neo Pop artist, FC SOFIA.
Artist FC SOFIA's discourse is situated at the crossroads between Pop Art and the Nouveaux Réalistes. Like the latter, they use objects lifted from the reality of their time, and do so thanks to a new and hyperactive tool: the Internet; a veritable global supermarket of raw material at their disposal for their works. This progressive approach has situated FC SOFIA at the top of the art market, and an exciting addition to Guy Hepner.
FC SOFIA creaties a union of both art and symbol, producing works that are in direct reference to the myths of consumerism, luxury and fashion, then playing on form and void the better to express the alienation provoked by accumulation at all cost. Each FC SOFIA work screams an integration of pop and visual culture, underscored with an associated commentary on the cult of consumerism and many other facets of modern society.
The couple, Catherine and Frederic, currently lives and works in Paris as one of the hottest artists on the market and at Guy Hepner. If ever there was way to reinvent popular art themes in a consumer society, FC SOFIA has found it. Soon to be on view at Guy Hepner, FC SOFIA offers an true originality in every sense of the world, while still rooted in a modern context.
