Why do I make Dumb Dog Trick videos?
I started doing photography in black and white. Developing photos in the darkroom. Eventually I stopped because, even though my prints were large and beautiful, it was such a pain in the ass to make them. I started making videos when digital technology made it easier to make short films or videos than it used to be to make a single print.
Dumb Dog Tricks is obviously inspired by the David Letterman Show's Stupid Pet Tricks. Did you know that when Animal Planet started Pet Star, Animal Planet got Letterman's Stupid Pet Trick coordinator to round up the talent. And, yes, I was turned down from Pet Star by that dude (can't remember his name) because my act didn't have "pop." But, heck, to be honest, he was pretty nice about it. He was also one of the few people I ever had a real chance to talk about it with. Early days of email. I also think the guy worked pretty hard wrangling a selection of animals. Lots of dog candidates.
So, what do you do? Make your own show.
Who needs pop when I got Dumb Dog Tricks? The point of Dumb Dog Tricks and really any dumb dog video, very funny dog video or what-have-you worth watching is to share the love and fun that pet ownership brings.
I pray you be easily entertained, however, as Dumb Dog Tricks are like Modern Art, the mystique is elusive, if you know what I mean. And how could you know what I mean! Har! Get it? It's that dumb.
What did I just watch? Why did I just watch that? What the hell? I want those :42 back. Hey look, there's links to more of these stupid videos. Hmm I'll try this one.
It has taken me about three years to balance the level of corniness with the immense stupidity and proper tone. It has not come easy. The theme music sound was made by scraping a '57 Chevy bumper against a curb. The photos appear chaotic, even paleolithic in their stark simplicity. The sound of the crazy man's voice conjures images of cigars, cognac and whispered secrets.
The experience of a dumb dog trick visually is similar to what one think when one of our pets leaves a surprise on the carpet -- What the crap is that?
Peace and love to all throughout the land.

Dr. Carol Osborne, DVM., presents a Web Series on Today’s New Approved Veterinary Vaccination Standards & Protocols for Dogs & Cats.
Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus (MLV) vaccine is given after 6 months of age, it produces an immunity which is good for the life of the pet (ie: canine distemper, parvovirus, feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not “boosted” nor are more memory cells induced.
Not only are annual boosters for Parvovirus and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. “There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines.
Puppies receive antibodies through their mother’s milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks. Puppies & kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks of age. Maternal immunity will neutralize the pet vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced.
Pet Vaccination given at 6 weeks will, however, delay the timing of the first highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart suppress rather than stimulate the immune system. A series of vaccinations is given starting at 8-12 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age. Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at 1 year 4 months) will provide most pets with lifetime immunity.Dr. Carol Osborne, DVM., presents a Web Series on Today’s New Approved... more

SHOCKING video has emerged showing a LIVE MOUSE scurrying around inside a bag of hamburger buns at a Philadelphia McDonald’s restaurant – and the former employee who recorded the disturbing footage says it was the “sixth or “seventh” time it happened.
“I was going back there to get something else and I heard some rustling, so I turned around, and I look, I seen a mouse inside the bread. Not on top of the package, but inside of the package,” Karruim Demaio told a local Fox News affiliate.
He added that the buns were not discarded. A manager instructed him to throw out buns that were chewed, then remove rodent droppings left on the remaining buns for customers!

The last couple of weeks have been a sad time for me and Riga[German Shepherd].
Dixie was our best friend. We had to put her to sleep a couple of weeks ago. She was getting sicker, and she was not going to get any better. We had to send her on to the Rainbow Bridge to wait for us there. It has been a big adjustment for Riga---she was never away from Dixie more than a few minutes her entire life. And for me, I never went anywhere that Dixie and Riga didn't go too. Dixie and Riga traveled more than most people in their entire lifetimes.
This is a post about Dixie I put on a German Shepherd Dog forum about 4 years ago. It pretty much sums up Dixie. Dixie would go to meet everyone she saw-----and everyone she met was her friend.
-------------" There are some large open lots and fields next door to the motel that Dixie, Riga and I are living at right now. Adjacent is a large parking lot where truckers park their 18 wheelers and either sleep in the cab sleepers or stay in the motel. There are woods and tall weeds covering about half of that lot--and next to that across a drainage ditch that has creek running through it is a large field with tall grass and trees. There are perhaps a dozen or more homeless people who live in the woods behind the truck lot.
Every morning and once or twice during the day I take Dixie and Riga over to the empty lots to run. It is convenient, and I don't have to do a lot of cleaning up.
The homeless people are usually hanging around, and Dixie(miss social butterfly) has to go meet and get attention from everyone she sees. So I get a lot of compliments on what wonderful dogs they are, and everyone has to tell a story about how they had a GSD or knew a GSD once that was such a great dog.
This morning---it's bright, cloudless, and there is frost all over. I heeled Dixie and Riga through the motel and stopped at the office, put them on a stay outside the office while I paid for the next week. It's a usual routine---and Dixie and Riga are perfect even without commands(they know what to do). Lots of people are coming and going----and most of them pretty much ignore Dixie and Riga---a few make a wide berth around them(for no reason other than their own preconceptions).
So, I finished my business at the office, and we heeled across the parking lots to the open fields and woods. I gave them the OK GO, release, and they were both off like shots off into the woods. They were back a few minutes later, and I let them run a little.
As we were just leaving, there was some shouting and a guy waving at me---about 75 yards off---so I waited while he hurried over. It was Jay, one of the homeless people who lives in the woods around there. He said Dixie and Riga had come to their campsite(they live in tents) to greet everyone and give them kisses and get some petting. He had come out all that way just to tell me thanks for bringing them over---they all loved starting the day with a warm GSD greeting and attention.
I thought to myself that on a GSD scale, you are a much better person if you live in a tent in the woods and give them attention and affection than if you drive an Escalade and have Gucci luggage and ignore them."------------------
My Dad used to say, "Try to live your life so that when you have to go, everyone is sorry to see you leave."
By that definition---Dixie led one of the most successful lives ever.
Goodbye Dixie---we will all miss you very much. The last couple of weeks have been a sad time for me and Riga[German Shepherd].... more

A dog allegedly was spotted driving a mobile home down the street in Darwin, Australia, after learning how to drive by observing his owner, observers claim.
Woodley, a 2-year-old German Koolie, allegedly took the mobile home for a spin while his owner, Richard McCormack was in a store, The Sun reported.
"I came out and saw the bus going down the road. I couldn't believe it," McCormack said.
This isn't the first time Woodley has tried to take the wheel, his owner explained.
"He sits next to me when I'm driving and in the driver's seat when I'm not. The handbrake is on the dashboard and he's seen me release it many times. He was just copying me. He's tried it on before," said McCormack.
The vehicle was eventually brought to a stop when bystander Phil Newton, 30, jumped in an open window and put the handbrake back on after seeing that a dog was navigating the mobile home.
"This was weird, even for the Northern Territory," he said.

A cat descended a 30- to 40-foot Saguaro cactus in Arizona after being stuck on top of it for three days.
The cat, black with white markings, apparently became stuck on top of the cactus in a desert area near Saguaro Lake, KNVX-TV, Phoenix, reported Friday.
A witness said he first saw the cat there three days before it came down.
Slowly but surely, the cat started to climb down Friday, starting face-first before turning around and backing its way down. Near the bottom, it leaped off the cactus, making a safe landing.
The feline was seen wandering in the area after news crews left the scene.
