Dutch protesters object to this month's internet release of the controversial 15-minute short film, directed by Geert Wilders, a right-wing politician who describes Islamic ideology as "the enemy of freedom".
The BBC Reports:
Some protesters in central Amsterdam carried signs that said "Stop the witch hunt against Muslims".
"We can no longer remain silent. There is a climate of hate and fear in the Netherlands," said Rene Danen, a spokesman from anti-racism organisation Nederland Bekent Kleur (The Netherlands Shows its Colours), which organised the protest.
The film has already been condemned by several Muslim countries, including Iran and Pakistan.

The Dutch government has decided to raise its terror alert level because of an upcoming short film by far right politician Geert Wilders and the possible response it will yield.
There is a lively discussion going on in the Netherlands about this film already. How far can one go when pronouncing his opinion or political views? Does freedom of speech mean freedom of insult? The Dutch government has decided to raise its terror alert level because of an... more

A decade ago, Jeff Mangum, a songwriter from the Louisiana backwoods, and his broken-down band released what some critics have called one of the generation's greatest albums, a gloriously odd musical curiosity. "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" is a musical tribute to Anne Frank.
Photographs, the music video (Aeroplane Over the Sea) and a very touching Holocaust Tribute video are included.A decade ago, Jeff Mangum, a songwriter from the Louisiana backwoods, and his... more

This is a basic backgrounder for Americans, primarily, who might think Europeans do nothing all day but bitch about Americans. Don’t get me wrong—they do love bitching about Americans. But they also like bitching about each other, as well. Bordering countries, especially, have complex caricatures of each other, even when an outsider might think they’re more or less the same. This is a basic backgrounder for Americans, primarily, who might think Europeans do... more

While the era of big-box bookstores and amazon.com changed the way people get and browse for their books and media, libraries are not dead. Here in the Netherlands, they are very much alive.
In this video I visit the new crown jewel of all libraries in Amsterdam. It is the largest in Europe; an amazing cultural space with a long list of amenities that are worth checking out, if you ever find yourself in this city. While the era of big-box bookstores and amazon.com changed the way people get and... more

A provocative anti-Islam film is set to be screened in Holland next week. The feature-length was made by outspoken - some might say bigoted - right-wing Dutch politician, Geert Wilders, pictured. It has drawn criticism from moderate politicians from all camps, and much anger from the Muslim community in the Netherlands. Supporters say the Koran will be revealed as a 'source of inspiration for intolerance, murder and terror'.

A big storm is approaching the Netherlands, my home country. The Dutch have always lived with the challenges of the sea, and took measures to keep it from taking over. Have a look on the wikipedia page about the Deltaworks, a state of the art project that both keeps the Netherlands save from the sea and still takes into account the environmental impact of a dike and levee system.
The Dutch seem to have the coming storm under control, no panic necessary:
