"This is from a documentary shown on Channel 4 in the UK called 'Young@Heart'; the name of the New England octogenarian chorus line. The performer here is Fred Knittle, who suffers from congestive heart failure. This song was intended to be a duet between Fred and another chorus member, Bob Salvini. Sadly, Bob died of a heart attack and it was left to Fred to carry the song on his own. If I'm correct, the people you see crying at 01:13 are Bob's family. The lady you occasionally see mouthing the lyrics in the audience is Fred's wife.
There were some very touching scenes where we see Fred rehearsing alone soon after Bob's death. It was an incredible film.""This is from a documentary shown on Channel 4 in the UK called... more

In an era when contemporary art is quite regularly included in investment portfolios, it's refreshing to see a man who is truly nourished by his art, who explores ideas about the relationship between art and artist, creation and destruction, and the inherent beauty of transience. In an era when contemporary art is quite regularly included in investment portfolios,... more

I saw this film last week and it has stuck with me ever since. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I'm pretty sure I wasn't expecting anything as mature, honest, or respectful as this film is of its subjects.
It's out on DVD now, and the DVD also has a short feature on the making of the doc.

It's a classic. It's been banned. It's illegal. And all it is is a little documentary of the rise and death of Karen Carpenter as told with Barbie Dolls. Mattel sued the filmmaker and won. He cannot show this film anywhere to anyone. However, as much as Mattel tries, they can't seem to get it off the Internet. We all win! It's a classic. It's been banned. It's illegal. Slavoj Zizek the irrreverent stand-up of philosophy is always worth my time. he's even better live. Above is a link to an excerpt in which he talks about "Blue Velvet."
Recently, the 40 minute clip I wanted to post was removed because of copyright, but "A Pervert's Guide to Cinema" is totally worth renting/buying.
a quote from MoMA's press release:
"The Perverts Guide to Cinema is an exuberant romp through the popular field of dreams known as cinema with Slavoj Zizek, the irrepressible Slovenian psychoanalyst and philosopher... Zizek not only presents clips from films by Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, and the Marx Brothers, to name a few, but makes his points by inserting himself into reconstructed scenes from the films."
This is well worth the download if you are as gleeful as I am about film and psychological "anatomy."

The new documentary "War Made Easy" isn't just a searing critique of how administrations over the past 40 years have manipulated the media to build support for war. The 72-minute film is a media provocation itself -- a challenge to federal copyright laws.Based on a 2005 book by Bay Area media critic Norman Solomon and narrated by actor Sean Penn, roughly 90 percent of "War Made Easy" consists of archival news footage from major television networks that would cost a ton of money to license -- if the filmmakers had paid for all it; they bought only about 60 percent from distributors. The new documentary "War Made Easy" isn't just a searing critique of... more

At BritDoc this week I had the pleasure of seeing the first public screening of Kim Longinotto's new film, Hold Me Tight, Let Me Go.
Its a spit-fest. And a hug-fest. Plus, its beautifully shot, sensitively told, and it has the power to warm your soul - and terrify you to your core.

I like how this film connects several elements of the climate crisis to help the viewer see the big picture. It's compelling throughout, with a wide range of interviews, from Gorbachev to Stephen Hawking. I caught an advanced screening, it'll be out on Aug 17th. I recommend it to everyone.I like how this film connects several elements of the climate crisis to help the... more

I love Werner Herzog. He makes these crazy movies about men losing their minds in the world, losing themselves in nature and the fragility and harshness of the human spirit. And "Grizzly Man" is just a sampling of his chaotic vision.I love Werner Herzog. He makes these crazy movies about men losing their minds in the... more

I wanna see this documentary real bad. I hope it gets a DVD release!
PLOT DESCRIPTION
Filmmaker Jennifer Venditti crafts a cinema verite-style coming of age story with this portrait of a small-town teen from Maine who struggles to embrace his outsider status while still being shaped by the tragic events of his childhood. Shunned by his classmates and categorized as a "special needs" student by his teachers, Billy boldly refuses to be victimized by his individuality in an environment obsessed with labels and conformity. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
