Casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan continue to mount. According to recent figures, 4,180 American soldiers have died since the war was launched in 2003. There have been some 610 casualties in Afghanistan. And Iraqi deaths due to the invasion are said to be well over 1 million. A lot of young men and women are left dealing with the sudden loss of their spouses, their friends, and children.
Taryn Davis was 21 when she lost her husband Michael to a roadside bomb in Baghdad on May 21, 2007. Working through her grief, spending 14 hours a day on the internet, she wasn't finding what she needed. So she built a community of widow-to-widow peer support: what began as a group on MySpace has become an ongoing support and documentary project that tells the stories of women and the impact of war. And they've started holding outings together, like tubing in Texas, and surfing in LA. Davis has also been featured in 'In Their Boots,' the groundbreaking documentary series that tells the stories of men and women who are fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
You can learn more about the American Widow Project here. The dvd will be distributed free to war widows. Taryn Davis and her co-director on the film, Don Swaynos, are screening the American Widow Project at the Austin Film Festival in Texas, October 19th.Casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan continue to mount. In the 1960s, there was a dramatic push to reduce the number of mental health patients in large public psychiatric hospitals, shifting their care to local communities. However, those communities were ill-prepared to provide treatment for them, and they ended up being left or abandoned on the streets to fend for themselves.
Presently, increasingly large numbers of mentally ill persons have ended up trapped as inmates in our country’s prisons and jails, rather than receiving treatment in mental health facilities.
This article includes a number of dramatic photographs of mentally ill persons who are presently trapped in prison, as well as an absolutely chilling documentary that provides a look at the unbearable experiences that the mentally ill endure inside the prison walls.

She is waiting in line for her monthly food ration...she is only ten years old.
With 40% of the population under poverty line, Iran is ranked 27th on the 'list of countries by percentage of population living in poverty' and more and more underprivileged individuals in Iran are turning to private nonprofit charity organizations for help.
Due to the number of people in need, most charity organizations can only afford to give each person less than ten dollars a month, along with some rice and vegetable oil.
What adds to the problem is the number of orphans who rely on these charity organizations as their only source of income and food. Sometimes these young boys and girls, such as the girl in this documentary, also have to find a way to feed their younger siblings. She is waiting in line for her monthly food ration...she is only ten years old.... more
