When you think Bollywood, do you think: choreographed pelvic thrusts, PG-rated love scenes, emotive ballads and uncomfortably cheesy acting? Do you also think...I COULD DO THAT? Well, now it's your chance to prove it.
Sign up at http://www.thegogame.com/bollywood as an individual or team to compete in an Indian-themed multimedia scavenger hunt through the streets of Haight Ashbury and see if you have what it takes to be crowned San Francisco's next Bollywood Star. The game goes from 1 - 3pm and more information will be provided once you sign up at: http://www.thegogame.com/bollywood
$20 suggested donation goes toward purchasing goats for tribal villagers in rural India and also puts you in the running to win our grand prize: A FREE ROUNDTRIP FLIGHT TO INDIA. Jai ho!
At the end of the game, judging will take place at the Poleng Lounge. Stick around and the party at Poleng will turn into a happy hour from 4-6pm, where you will get to see the EXCLUSIVE DEBUT of a VIRAL VIDEO that will take this effort 'round the world. Filmed entirely in Koraput, India, the video stars the villagers, their goats, and their moves in a rap music parody of the Lonely Island's "I'm on a Boat" with a simple message: "I Want a Goat". Learn more at http://www.iwantagoat.com.
So dust off those early 90's dance moves and get ready to compete at the Community Game on Saturday, November 14th. Be sure to dress for success in bangles, turbans, sarees, kurtas, gem-tones, rave-wear or anything with jewels. It's going to get gaudy. When you think Bollywood, do you think: choreographed pelvic thrusts, PG-rated love... more

I posted last year about the 'Unite Bike 2008 - Twin Cities' –Now is time for San Francisco!!
Clark Patrick Photography & Bikes and The City present:
UNITE BIKE - SAN FRANCISCO
"This years Unite Bike photo will happen in 3 different cities, in Minneapolis-St. Paul – it’s origin, in San Francisco, and in Austin, Texas. The Unite Bike idea is traveling to new places this year because from the beginning it was envisioned to be more of a new kind of solidarity then just a group photo of people with bicycles.
Unite Bike is a test of whether our generation really believes in one another and the world we are struggling to create. This fall, during a very tumultuous time in our world, we can show the best of ourselves, and in the process help create the kind of society we all aspire to, even if only for the brief moment of time it takes to create a photograph.
Do not wait for leaders. Ride alone. And they will see we ride together." – Unite Bike 2009

That's right, nearly 70% of public land in downtown San Francisco is dedicated to automobiles. This is astonishing considering that San Francisco is the second densest city in the United States and it's such a car culturally driven city AND this is downtown, where much of the population lives or works. Thus, the need for Park(ing) Day 2009! This year, San Francisco Park(ing) day happens on September 18.
It's simple. Groups, organizations and even commercial businesses can literally walk up to parking spaces, pay the meters, and set up a make-shift park - law in SF says that parking spots aren't necessarily meant for cars, which is where this idea grew from.
The program is great. It promotes public space in "unlikely" places and really gets the discourse moving on how much dedication we give to cars in urban spaces, especially in San Francisco. There are also multiple events happening around the world and the idea has really spread. Check it out! Also take a look at their very cool website @ parkingday.org.That's right, nearly 70% of public land in downtown San Francisco is dedicated to... more

On Sunday (06-28-09) was the 36th Annual San Francisco LGBT Pride Parade.
The gay community gathered on a joyful march along Market Street in the spirit of its celebration theme: "In order to form a more perfect union…"
Mayor Gavin Newson e other local authorities participated on this event to show their support and commitment to preserve everyone's civil rights.
This event that usually attracts a joyful crowd this year seemed to have motivated everyone to come out. It felt like the rainbow was attracting everyone to show their support to marriage and family equality.
Prop. 8 gave the gay community a sense of union that is beyond the aspect of civil union. It made us realize that denying lawful recognition to longtime commitment among same gender couples affects the lives of their children as well.
The thought that children of same sex gender grew up by under the social stigma of their illegitimacy status, it's enough reason to recognize that Prop. 8 is extremely unfair!
Meanwhile, gays everywhere shall stand up and keep on shouting out loud: "homophobia got to go!"On Sunday (06-28-09) was the 36th Annual San Francisco LGBT Pride Parade.

Authorities in San Francisco have announced a crackdown on "flash mobs" after a mass pillow fight on Valentine's Day left the city with clean-up costs estimated at over $20,000 (£14,600).
The worldwide phenomenon of flash mobs - in which groups of people suddenly appear at pre-arranged public places - works mainly via tip-offs through websites and text messages, with no identifiable leaders.
But it rained during this year's annual pillow fight, and mountains of sticky feathers clogged municipal drains, flooding streets and business premises.
"It was quite a mess, much more than we have experienced in previous years," said Mohammed Nuru, the city's deputy director of public works. "Everywhere was feathers."Authorities in San Francisco have announced a crackdown on "flash mobs" after a mass... more

"The problem with television is that ... the average American hasn't got time for it."
- New York Times in regards to the prototype television shown at the 1939 World's Fair.
http://bcnm.berkeley.edu/tvfuneral

The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA),
Berkeley Center for New Media (BCNM) and
The Long Now Foundation
Date: Tuesday February 17, 02009*
Time: 7pm to 10pm
Location: Berkeley Art Museum, 2621 Durant Ave., Berkeley, CA 94720
Cost: free, bring cash and id for full bar courtesy of the RockStar Bartenders
Extras: donate your Analog TV for recycling! (one per person please)
Website: http://bcnm.berkeley.edu/tvfuneral
On February 17th join author Bruce Sterling, technology pundit Paul Saffo, and other special guests at the Berkeley Art Museum to mourn the loss of our long time acquaintance, the Analog Television Signal. Born in the 01920's the signal has been an integral part of all our lives, bringing us news of the rich, the famous, the politicians, the wars, the Apollo landings, the thrills of victory, and the agonies of defeat. While Analog Television has not been a good friend to us all, it has been important to each and every one of us. Analog Television is survived by its wife Digital Television, and its second cousin Internet Television.
Please bring your Analog TV with antenna for display (and free recycling by ACCRC), as we will stack as many sets as we can in memoriam to our life long friend. At the ceremony Paul Saffo will spell out the sordid history of the Analog TV Signal's life, the group Author and Punisher will perform the funeral dirge, and just before the signal winks out for the last time, author Bruce Sterling will deliver the eulogy via pirate television broadcast supplied by Neighborhood Public Radio.
Note: Bruce Sterling will not be speaking live, this will be a televised appearance he has created specifically for this event.
Also note: Apropos of the soap-operatic life of TV, there is a chance that Congress may issue an 11th hour stay of the "do not resuscitate order" on the Analog TV Signal, however this event will go forward either way as February 17 marks the day they will begin going off air.
Donated TV's will be responsibly reused or recycled by The Alameda County Computer Resource Center who will be on hand to help with TV collection. If you cant make it, but have a TV that needs to be recycled ACCRC will take it free!
Funeral Program:
7:00pm – Doors open (free admission) Durant Lobby - Berkeley Art Museum, 2621 Durant Ave., Berkeley, CA, 94720 - add your working Analog TV and antenna to the recycling pile, cash bar
7:30pm – Museum Theater - Paul Saffo speaks, theater seats 230, overflow served by TV broadcast to lobby
8:00pm – Back to Durant Lobby for reminiscing
8:30pm – Bancroft Lobby, Art Museum - Funeral Dirge performance by Author and Punisher
9:00pm – Bancroft Lobby - Bruce Sterling delivers eulogy
9:30pm – Snowcrash of the Analog Television Signal begins
9:40pm – There is a rumor that the signal may be pirated by the NPR group
10:00pm – End of event
Midnight – Video of Bruce Sterling eulogy released on the Internet"The problem with television is that ... the average American hasn't got time for it."... more

North Beach Art Walk sponsered in part by ArtSpan and The Telegraph Hill Dwellers
October 25 & 26, 11 am to 6 pm
Fivepoints Arthouse will be showcasing several works from local north beach resident artists, as well as work by our founders, Jason Bryan, Erik Parra, and Jessica Laurent. On Saturday, October 25, we will screen films from Telegraph Hill's own Judy Irving: ì19 Arrests, No Convictions,î is about a legendary Italian-American bar owner who redeems himself as a San Francisco Bay open-water swimmer, "escaping" from Alcatraz to the mainland; and a SNEAK PREVIEW of new sequences from the double-disc ìWild Parrotsî Collectorís Edition DVD, which will be released nationally Oct. 28th.
To help increase foot traffic in our neighborhood during the weekend of ArtSpan's Open Studios, and, to create an opportunity for more artists to participate, THD's Art & Culture Committee is organizing an art walk and inviting participation of all artists and merchants in North Beach.
Artists will be included on a map along with everybody participating in the Art Walk and/or the Open Studios. Regardless of whether you're planning to show your work/performance/poetry reading on the sidewalk, in your studio, or in a gallery, we would like to know about it and get you on our list of participating artists and merchants and have you on the map. At no cost to you, we will print this list and design a map and make it available to the public.
Businesses and storefront owners are lined up to showcase an artist's work or, lend their empty storefront window for that weekend.
This event is not limited to visual arts. If you're a poet, writer, or a musician, plan a reading or performance at any location in the hood and let us know.
For more information on how to get involved and to be included in the map please email historian@thd.org

Neal Stephenson's long-awaited book Anathem will be released to the public on Tuesday September 9, 02008. Join us on this evening to hear the author read from his new work and converse with Stewart Brand and Danny Hillis of The Long Now Foundation. We'll also have a special musical performance of math-based chanting created for Anathem by composer David Stutz . A book signing, reception and all-around celebration will follow (we'll have a cash bar too). Additional copies of the book will also be for sale at the event, but we can only guarantee that pre-ordered books will be signed.
The concept behind Anathem germinated in 01999* when Danny Hillis asked Stephenson and several other contributors to sketch out their ideas of what Long Now's 10,000 Year Clock might look like. Stephenson tossed off a quick sketch and promptly forgot about it. Five years later, however, when he was between projects, the idea came back to him and he began to explore the possibility of building a novel around it - Anathem is the result.
"It is a great story, set in an alternative reality where people take long-term thinking seriously." -Danny Hillis
"Long Now’s 10,000-year clock inspired Neal Stephenson’s new story, Anathem, and now Anathem is inspiring the Long Now. In ten centuries, no one will be sure which came first." -Kevin Kelly
Tickets are $10 for the event only, or $42.50 for the event and a SIGNED copy of Anathem ($10 ticket and $32.50 book, includes tax -- only pre-ordered books are guaranteed to be signed).
Members of The Long Now Foundation receive a complimentary ticket with RSVP, and can choose to pre-order a SIGNED copy of Anathem for $32.50 when they RSVP (only pre-ordered books are guaranteed to be signed).
Tickets and Member RSVP are available through Brown Paper Tickets: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/42323
We will also be doing a live stream of this event at 7pm PST on 9/9/08 on http://www.longnow.org/anathem/Neal Stephenson's long-awaited book Anathem will be released to the public on Tuesday... more

TV’s in trouble. It might be terminal, but don’t lose hope. Using their cable and satellite TV network along with their social news website, Current is experimenting across both media, looking for a cure.
