Little girl shot in the throat by brother, then goes to school with a bandage

A nine-year-old girl was 'accidentally' shot by her brother but kept it quiet until the following day when a teacher at her school realised what had happened.
The two children had been left home alone in Wisconsin, when they heard a dog barking and thought someone was trying to break into their home. They went to get a 9mm handgun from a room in the house, Green Bay police said.
The girl’s older brother, who is aged between 11 and 12, shot her just below the throat - apparently by mistake - while handling the gun, but then tried to hide the wound by bandaging it while their father was still out at work.

The children’s mother does not live at the home, police said.
Their father drove them to school on Friday morning seemingly unaware of what had happened, but a teacher noticed the girl was feeling unwell and called an ambulance and the police.

The girl told the teacher at Elmore Elementary 'my brother shot me last night’, said Jim Runge, of Green Bay Police Department.
‘The teacher felt something was wrong, could see something was not right with the girl (and) started questioning her. (She) initially denied (and) said she was fine,’ he added.

It was the two kids, they heard noise outside, heard the dog barking, so the girl knew where the gun was in dad's room, went and got it.

‘At some point she either handed it to her brother or he grabbed it and then a shot (went) off and struck her in the chest, just below the throat. And it exited her back, just behind the shoulder.
‘I've seen the pictures of the wound and to me it's just amazing that this little girl is going to go home tomorrow or the next day.'
The bullet, which exited through her shoulder, did not hit any of her vital organs and she did not require surgery.
The girl is expected to leave hospital in the next few days.
Amanda Brooker, of Green Bay Area Public School District, said: ‘A fourth-grader arrived at school (and) was not looking well. (The) teacher noticed, brought her down to the main office (and) realised she was seriously injured.’
Child Protective Services will help police in the investigation, who must decide whether to charge the father with any offences, reported television station WLUK FOX 11.
No charges had been made in connection with the incident as of Friday evening.
