For weeks I have listened to complaints about the Obama’s coming deal with the big banks that was sure to leave main street Americans out in the cold while giving criminal Banksters a get out of jail free card. Today that deal arrived. It is a modest down payment on what the US needs to restore the housing market on main street. Given the Republican Party’s unwillingness to do anything at the federal level to help suffering Americans, it was the best Obama could do, with the help of State Attorneys General from both parties from every state but Oklahoma, whose AG sided with the Banksters. The deal neither leaves main street Americans out in the cold, nor does it give criminal Banksters a get out of jail free card. For weeks I have listened to complaints about the Obama’s coming deal with the... more

Back in the Totalitarian Corporate Plutocracy of Fitzwalkerstan, formerly Wisconsin, things look pretty bleak for Fartfuhrer Walker, as he is at bay, desperately seeking escape from both the law and the people. As campaign season rolls along, Republicans everywhere have been using dog whistle language, and sometimes direct statements, to demean minorities. Republicans seem unable to function without the politics of fear and hate. One Republican candidate for the US Senate faced a terrible dilemma. He could not attack black people, because Michigan has such a large black population, so he went after Asians instead. As campaign season rolls along, Republicans everywhere have been using dog whistle... more

“Born to Die” is the new music video directed by the celebrated photographer/filmmaker Yoann Lemoine, from the chart-topping major label album debut by 25-year-old retro chanteuse Lana Del Rey. A number of malcontent bloggers have taken snarky aim at Del Rey, taking issue with the size of her fantastic pout, with the fact that she changed her name from the far less exotic Lizzy Grant, and for presenting an image they feel is just too cool to be real. Nevertheless, Del Rey comes across like a gangster Lauren Bacall, finds musical inspiration in the bright lights of Monte Carlo and can sing with enough grace and longing to break your heart after just one verse.
This piece includes color photographs and the music video.

Their inspiration for a style of resistance never before seen in Russia, was the riot grrrl punk movement, including groups like Kathleen Hanna’s Bikini Kill, and flash mobs. The young women of the collective, average age 25, have revealed only the smallest details about their lives. None will divulge their day jobs. They only use first-names. In the two weeks since their mid-January action, the all-female group has become a potent symbol of anger at the status quo in Russian society and their videos have gone viral all over the world. Like many young people in Russia, the members of the Pussy Riot collective are furious at Vladamir Putin’s plans to seek the presidency again and his return was the impetus behind the formation of the group (as well as their song “Putin Has Pissed Himself”). http://www.freeturbine.com/index.php/news/general-music-news/item/pussy-riot-revolt-in-russia-putin-s-got-scaredTheir inspiration for a style of resistance never before seen in Russia, was the riot... more

The decision to defund Planned Parenthood by Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is especially hurtful to poor women, who have no health services other than Planned Parenthood. I am convinced that they are not being honest about their claimed reason, and that their real reason is to support the ongoing Republican vendetta against Planned Parenthood. I fully support aid for breast cancer screenings for women, and am happy to tell you that there is a way we can support breast cancer screenings for all women, but leave the Komen foundation to their political intrigues. The decision to defund Planned Parenthood by Susan G. “The First Time I Ran Away” is a beautifully animated music video for M. Ward’s new solo album, “A Wasteland Companion,” set for release on Merge April 10th. The “Him” from the indie music group She & Him is Matthew Stephen Ward, known by his stage name M. Ward, a singer-songwriter and guitarist who rose to prominence in the Portland, Oregon music scene. The delightful animated video was directed by Joel Trussell and his team of animators, who use M. Ward’s lyrics as a basis to tell the three-part story following a girl who’s run away with her pet llama and fish. The soft, pastel colors are a perfect companion to M. Ward’s soothing voice.
This piece includes colorful illustrations and the wonderful animated music video.

“The Wolf I Used To Be” is a magical animated short film, a collaborative project created by artists at London’s Nearly Normal Studios. The film is a short narrative about a wolf’s drastic life change. Everyone has their own interpretation about what “The Wolf” might mean: it can be seen as a reflection of modern life. The grass always seems to be much greener on the other side, but as is often the case in real life, it truly isn’t.

There are few lies Republicans will not tell to demonize the poor, as justification for cutting off the needy to give bigger tax cuts and subsidies to the greedy. Many of those lies are quite absurd, like this one. Those lazy, good for nothing [minority implied] wastrels are cashing their federal benefits and running to the strip club for a lap dance. They are so serious about propagandizing US voters with this BS, that they are actually trying to pass a law to prevent their made-up complaint. There are few lies Republicans will not tell to demonize the poor, as justification... more

“The Last Goodbye” is a powerfully emotive music video portrait of the rock duo Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince, directed by the Oscar nominated actress Samantha Morton. The Kills celebrate ten years of musical partnership with this poignant and captivating video. The melancholic song “The Last Goodbye” offsets the usually hard-edged sound that Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince are known for, with haunting vocals and a nostalgic piano loop.
Shot in monochrome on crisp, silvery 35mm film, the video reflects the beautiful simplicity of the track, while using an old-school photo-booth to provide an intimate backdrop for Mosshart’s intense and heart-warming opening performance. Her introduction is followed by a series of touching poses that casts a tender light on the musicians’ longstanding and spirited friendship, as Mosshart and Hince share memories of their first meeting and a decade of collaboration.
This piece includes black-and-white photographs and the heart-warming music video.

Many years ago, during my time as a child and through young adulthood, I was immersed in the (sometimes solitary) lavish joys of nature in rural South Carolina. The memories of the steaming, dusty red clay roads and the smells of downstate piney-woods are now fading away, replaced by years of gritty urban life in Chicago’s inner-city. However, that doesn’t mean that now I’ve become completely blind to the beauty of rural landscapes. I just have to enjoy it from the comfort of a chair, in more climate-controlled conditions. So this video is pretty perfect for me.
“Yosemite HD” is an amazing four-minute time-lapse short art film, a collaboration between Sheldon Neill and Colin Delehanty. They made numerous trips to Yosemite National Park, where they captured the beautiful landscape it offers for visitors every year. Set to “Outro,” from M83′s lovely and stratospheric “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming,” this might be the best music video you could ask for. So stop whatever you’re doing right now, put this video in full-screen mode and breath very deeply during the film’s duration!
This piece includes colorful high-resolution photographs, as well as the exhilarating short film.

So having my website offline today has been pretty interesting i found myself bored, doing some updating offline and reading a lot of current website. my music site is pretty powerful in the midwest region and chicago and i found some people were stunned at first then read the protest website and they are happy. But i can say in 7 years my website has been on the net it has NEVER been offline for "a protest" or a scheduled downtime like this.
So as many of webmasters i also have my website offline today in response to the PIPA and SOPA legislation that is going through congress. But in reality for a 12 hour to 24 hour suspension on a lot of websites is it really being effective as in what will be the true outcome to this situation.
Remember the Wall Street Occupation sure there was a lot of hype, buzz and press about it but nothing has really been done and they have been doing a ton of work outside the box in the streets (not just online).
So you knock down some major websites for 1 day sure it might disrupt internet traffic but most people will just go oh i will just log in after the protest. Sure it might make people go WTF is going on here but it is just 1 day its not like websites are protesting for say 1 week or even 1 month, you want to really cause some buzz and press knock down a few of these major websites down for 1 month and people would loose there minds without google, wiki or other websites that people survive off of basically.
You really do not understand how co-dependent you are when it comes to search engines, or indexing sites when it comes to your own personal website or branding, everyone has there own unique website they have bookmarked or visit on a daily basis and if this new bill starts to knock down and censor all these websites the internet will be a very lonely place and very empty place, remember back in the dialup internet days something to that degree where the whole .com era was just taking momentum.
As for copyright i am ALL for copyright protection and so fourth i was thinking though instead of just censoring out websites why not put a warning like google does for sites that phish attack or might cause malware? A nice warning that this site might be monitored for copyright infringement and its up to you if you want to visit that website, it would be a simple and easy solution rather then all the search engines and other providers just totally blocking the website or link.
Me being in the music industry i want talent to be heard or listened to or watched i want there song to become a big hit i want there video to be viewed or heard. Its not all about making millions of dollars they always have time to get that later on in time from events or company sponsorships or albums sales at events. As for MP3s well if someone wants to download them they can always find a way to do so, the same for movies and music videos if its on the internet its liable for getting downloaded or ripped.

PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting “creativity”. The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites; they just have to convince a judge that the site is “dedicated to copyright infringement.” The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year. That’s for a fix that won’t work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is bad for creativity and does not protect your rights.
This piece includes a video about SOPA.

“Prom Night” is a wild, high-energy eight-minute narrative short film by director/performer/choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall, which premiered at SXSW last year. Rowlson-Hall stars as a/the/your prom-date in this beautiful, surreal, reference-laden piece. The film takes a very simple concept, a look at the cultural trappings that come with dream girls and trips to the prom, and knocks it out of the park.
Hall, who stars in the film, looks straight into the camera and takes the viewer through a dance in an empty school gymnasium decorated for the prom. While The Ronettes’ “Be My Little Baby” plays, through a series of wardrobe alterations and spontaneous costume and hairstyle changes, Hall leads the viewer through a litany of archetypal lovers: from the holy virginal, to Lolita, to Carrie. “Prom Night” is such an engrossing dance/performance short film that you won’t dare take your eyes off of it.
This piece includes color photographs and the completely absorbing short film.

Yesterday Barack Obama proposed that Congress give him the authority to merge six separate agencies related to commerce, in move sure to confound Republicans. Although nobody will be fired, this will eliminate 1,000 federal jobs by attrition, save $3 billion, eliminate duplication of effort, and provide one-stop access for business. In theory, this should be a Republican wet dream, except for one thing. There are 16 shots in Lars von Trier’s hauntingly beautiful prelude to “Melancholia,” a movie about love, family and the apocalypse. The soundtrack for the overture to “Melancholia” is the exquisite prelude to Wagner’s 1859 opera, “Tristan and Isolde,” an opera Wagner described as “one of endless yearning, longing, the bliss and wretchedness of love; world, power, fame, honor, chivalry, loyalty and friendship all blown away like an insubstantial dream,” for which there is “one sole redemption-death, finality, a sleep without awakening.”
The movie, among Mr. von Trier’s greatest, stars Kirsten Dunst as Justine, a young advertising copywriter who, shortly after she gets married endures two separate yet related catastrophes. A wedding party at an oceanside golf resort owned by Justine’s brother-in-law ends with her new husband leaving, which in turn brings on the depression that overtakes her and seems to inaugurate the end of the world or her dream of the same. Many of the movie’s themes are introduced in the overture’s first eight minutes, a masterpiece in miniature that presents a deep reflection of literary, artistic and cinematic allusions.
“Melancholia” was named Best Picture at The 2011 European Film Awards in Berlin; the film also won awards for cinematography and production design. Previously, Kirsten Dunst won the Best Actress Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival for her performance in “Melancholia.” Last week, The National Society of Film Critics named Lars Von Trier’s end-of-the-world drama “Melancholia” Best Picture, and Best Actress honors went to Kirsten Dunst for her performance in the film.
