I have always been a chocoholic. I have pictures of me as a kid on Halloween stuffing chocolates into my mouth. I was such a chocoholic that in the early 80's a magazine called Choclatier came out and I was one of the first subscribers. From this magazine I learned about all these new wonderful chocolate makers such as Godiva, Neuhaus, even our old American standby's Hershey and Nestle had upscale versions that weren't normally available in stores, but I have to say my fall back was always See's Candy.I have always been a chocoholic. A while ago it was suggested that I write about each of the spots on the 49 mile drive of San Francisco. Today I decided to write about the next spot, Chinatown only to realize that I had written about it already. So I started to skim through the list and discovered something…I’ve pretty much covered all the spots on this list.A while ago it was suggested that I write about each of the spots on the 49 mile drive... more

(CBS/AP) Cut it out. That's the message a group of Jews and Muslims want to deliver to proponents of a proposed circumcision ban scheduled to be on the ballot in San Francisco ballots this November. And now they've taken their message to court.
The group filed suit on Wednesday to block the measure banning male circumcision, arguing that California law bars local governments from restricting medical procedures.
"It's a measure that would basically infringe upon my rights as a Muslim to practice here," said plaintiff Leticia Preza, 31, who has a 4-year-old son and baby daughter. "It would also take away my rights as a parent to choose what's a good procedure for my child."
Other plaintiffs share similar sentiments. "As Jews, we take the threat of banning circumcision personally," said Jeremy Benjamin. "This measure singles us out, along with the Muslim community, as illegitimate and unwanted in our own city."
The city by the bay is set to be the first U.S. city to hold a public vote on banning male circumcision, after city officials confirmed last month that the initiative had enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.
The proposed law would ban circumcision on males under the age of 18. What if a child is born into a religion that requires circumcision? It wouldn't matter - the scalpel wielder would face a misdemeanor charge punishable by a $1,000 fine or up to one year in jail.
Supporters of the ban say male circumcision is an unnecessary, painful, form of genital mutilation that parents should not be allowed to force on their child.
But the measure faces fierce opposition, especially among Jews and Muslims who consider circumcision a sacred religious rite. They say the ban would violate their constitutional rights.
International health organizations promote male circumcision to help reduce the spread of the AIDS virus, but there hasn't been the same kind of push in the U.S., because nearly 80 percent of American men are already circumcised, compared with a 30 percent average worldwide.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says the procedure cuts both ways. In its official policy statement on circumcision - updated in 2005 - the academy says circumcision has the potential to reduce the risk for bladder infections and help prevent transmission of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS. But they also say there's anecdotal evidence of potential downsides, like pain and a reduction in sexual sensation.
No matter how you slice it, this is one emotionally charged debate

“The Wanna Be Oddie” is a wacky three-minute animated short film by the young California animator Ben Lam Jun Bin. This one was initially inspired by old-timey black & white Mickey cartoons from Disney, but it quickly ends up crazily veering off into a weird 3D futuristic robot world. All poor little Wanna Be Oddie wanted was a drink of some nice cold milk from the vending machine, but things quickly spin into a wickedly slapstick other-worldly experience for him! This one will definitely quench your thirst for a little bit of very happy fun-time!
This piece includes a number of black-and-white pictures, as well as the very funny animated short film.

“Helios: Eadweard Muybridge in a Time of Change” is an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), which presents the first-ever retrospective examination of all aspects of artist Eadweard Muybridge’s pioneering photography. Best known for his groundbreaking studies of animals and humans in motion, what a magnificent photographer Eadweard Muybridge was and what a brilliant eye he had is too often overlooked. In addition to his iconic studies of animals in motion, Muybridge (1830-1904) was also an innovative and successful landscape and survey photographer, documentary artist, inventor and war correspondent.
The works in this exhibition have been brought together from 38 different collections and include a number of Muybridge’s photographs of Yosemite Valley, images of Alaska and the Pacific coast, pictures from Panama and Guatemala and urban panoramas of San Francisco, most of which were published under the pseudonym “Helios.” The exhibition also includes examples from Muybridge’s experimental series of sequential stop-motion photographs, such as his masterpieces “The Horse in Motion” and “Animal Locomotion.”
This piece includes a number of vintage photographs from the exhibition, a photo-gallery, a music video and a stop-motion animation.

Well, I’m still a bit in shock over this, but yesterday I received a call from Runa Raven Press and they have asked me to write a book about Baghdad by the Bay: San Francisco. Now Herb Caen did a fine job with his original Baghdad by the Bay, so I’ll have to call it Baghdad by the Bay: Revisited. The city has changed a lot since that book was written and at first it was just going to be a repurposing of my blog posts, but now I think I’ll need to step things up a notch or two.Well, I’m still a bit in shock over this, but yesterday I received a call from... more

Go into a very dark room on a bright day. Make a small hole in a window cover and look at the opposite wall. What do you see? Magic! There in full color and movement will be the world outside the window — upside down! This magic is explained by a simple law of the physical world. Light travels in a straight line and when some of the rays reflected from a bright subject pass through a small hole in thin material they do not scatter but cross and reform as an upside down image on a flat surface held parallel to the hole. This law of optics was known in ancient times.Go into a very dark room on a bright day. Make a small hole in a window cover and look... more

Although California is presently the only state with an official Harvey Milk Day, cities all across the country will be holding rallies and events today to honor the first openly gay man to be elected to public office and an icon of the gay-rights movement. Milk, who would have been 81 years-old, gave us his life 32 years ago, knowing that the first of any civil rights movement, who clearly and loudly proclaim their right to equality, most often meets a violent and sudden end. Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. He fought to end discrimination against gays and lesbians and built coalitions of gay-rights groups, labor unions and small-business owners. He was 48 when he was killed a year later by a former supervisor, Dan White.
“The Times of Harvey Milk,” a documentary film, won the 1984 Academy Award for Documentary Feature. The movie “Milk,” was released in 2008, directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Sean Penn as Milk and Josh Brolin as Dan White. “Milk” received two Academy Awards, for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor. In August 2009, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Harvey Milk the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contribution to the gay rights movement stating, “He fought discrimination with visionary courage and conviction.”
This piece includes a number of high-resolution photographs, a photo-gallery and four videos, including the full version of the Academy Award-winning documentary “The Times of Harvey Milk.”
