I share this review with you because it was one of my favorite reviews I’ve read this year. And when I finished reading the review I thought about something very important that happened to me when our friend sent me the link.
My life changed.
I was transported straight to the heart of Raitt’s palpable concert atmosphere.
I read the review and I felt rushes of joy, sadness, hope and an overwhelming sense of cathartic connectedness with the fans at the concert that captured the essence of live blues so beautifully. And this review represented one of the aspects of live music I love the most...I share this review with you because it was one of my favorite reviews I’ve read... more

Modest Mouse released a new album this year and this a video for track 7 from the CD titled "King Rat". The video concept is to switch the roles of humans and sea creatures. Interesting thing to think about. I didn't realize Heath Ledger had directed the video 'til it showed up in the credits. Where have I been? “King Rat” is an animated short film directed by the late Heath Ledger and co-directed by Daniel Auber, with music is provided by Modest Mouse. The video is a visual plea against the legal commercial whale hunts taking place off the coast of Australia. The video was fully conceived down to the last detail, but unfortunately Ledger never got to see the finished product before his death. In the interest of fully realizing Heath’s final work as a visual artist, THE MASSES (a film and music company in which Heath was a partner) finished the video in his honor, with the support and advocacy of Isaac Brock.
What if, instead of humans hunting whales, it was the other way around? What if whales sailed the open seas, hunting for swimming humans so that they could chop them up and use their parts to make ginger bread men? Of course, this sounds incredibly far-fetched and obviously is, but it does make for a brilliant social commentary and one hell of a music video.
And we can thank the late Heath Ledger for it all.
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is honored to be connected with this important work and hopes that it brings attention to the illegal slaughter of whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

"In January of 2007, while visiting his homeland of Australia, Heath Ledger presented Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse with an idea to direct a video for their yet-to-be-released song 'King Rat'. Heath's vision, brave and unapologetic in its nature, would marry his love of bold and original music with his impassioned stance against the illegal commercial whale hunts taking place of the coast of Australia each year. Always one to operate from his heart and take a stand for what he cared deeply about, Heath's intention was to raise awareness on modern whaling practices through a potent visual piece without having to say a word. It was his way to let the story, in its candid reversal, speak for itself."

The 2009 Outside Lands Festival Line-Up has been announced. This year Pearl Jam, Dave Matthew's Band, and Beastie Boys will be headlining the three day festival. The festival will take place in SF at the Golden State Park Aug. 28th-Aug. 30th. Other artists including M.I.A, Modest Mouse, and Black Eyed Peas will also take part in festival.
As I said before, the festival would never be able to top Radiohead. With my minor obsession with Pearl Jam, I think it came quite close.

Modest Mouse plans to release the music video actor Heath Ledger directed before his death in January 2008, the band's spokesperson tells SPIN.com. The Dark Knight actor helmed the animated clip for "King Rat," a bonus tune off 2007's We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. No specific date has been set for the release, which is expected to happen "soon." The video was animated by Terry Gilliam
In a 2007 interview with VH1 frontman Isaac Brock spoke about the collaboration with Ledger.
"Heath and I have a mutual friend and when we were in Australia, my fiancé and some of us in the band went out on a boat with him and his family and friends and talked about the idea," Brock said of the video's origin. "The idea sort of dropped, but then he just sent me an email saying that he wanted to do it."Modest Mouse plans to release the music video actor Heath Ledger directed before his... more
