It's been tumultuous for the economy in the half-week since we launched The Real Recovery: unemployment benefits were extended and then October's unemployment numbers hit over 10 percent. It seems like just the right time to get to the real stories behind the economic stats.
Each week on The Real Recovery we're going to ask a big question - and then spend the week figuring out the answer with your help. For next week - we're looking at those entering the job market for the very first time.
If a tenth of America is unemployed - how hard is it going to be for recent college graduates to get jobs? For college seniors who expect to graduate in 2010? From the National Bureau of Economic Research: "The Career Effects Of Graduating In A Recession":
Graduating in a recession leads to large initial earnings losses. These losses, which amount to about 9 percent of annual earnings in the initial stage, eventually recede, but slowly -- halving within five years but not disappearing until about ten years after graduation.
Starting Monday - we're going to focus on college graduates. Here's how you can get involved:
Are you a college senior?: Post a story on The Real Recovery about your job search. Do you have something lined up? Are you just trying not to think about it?
Did you graduate this year?: How's it been out there in the job market? Have you been able to find work?
Did you graduate years ago?: How was your experience in the economic climate you had? How does it compare to today's?
You can post your story to Current by clicking the "Post a Story" button on The Real Recovery group page and then just start typing!
And also, if you want to get involved as an investigator - send me a message on Current.
Six months ago Topspin and The Berklee College of Music announced a partnership to offer an online course teaching implementation of the Topspin digital music marketing and sales platform. The course is now ready and the registration is open for the course which begins January 11th.
Non-credit registration costs $995 ($200 more to get college credit) and includes a Topspin account. The course also marks the beginning of Topsin's wider release. To date, they've been a bit selective about who they work with because, as CEO Ian Rogers admits, "Frankly, it hasn’t been ready". "We’ve been using it ourselves all year and know its shortcomings," says Rogers. "We’ve been reshaping it to meet our needs and are excited to see how it meets the needs of other marketers, starting with the Berkleemusic.com course."http://www.hypebot.com/hypebot/2009/11/topspin-and-berklee-college-partner-for-online-m... more

Professor John Beddington, the UK's chief scientist, would not be drawn on whether the Home Secretary was wrong to sack Professor David Nutt.
David Nutt was chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.
He was fired after using a lecture to say cannabis was less harmful than alcohol and tobacco.
Asked whether he agreed with Professor Nutt's view that cannabis was less harmful than cigarettes and alcohol, Professor Beddington replied: "I think the scientific evidence is absolutely clear cut. "Each year, more than two million Americans enroll in for-profit colleges, also known as proprietary schools, and their popularity has only grown since the financial crisis. While traditional four-year colleges are struggling with dwindling student bodies and budget gaps, proprietary schools are reporting record enrollments as the newly unemployed try to retool their skills so they can wade back into the job market. Some of the largest for-profit chains say their numbers have doubled over the last year."See Original blog at: http://www.futuremajority.com/node/9108

The creation of a sustainable future will require the development of conservation practitioners with a strong foundation in science, leadership, and management. In addition, these practitioners will need to engage in cross-disciplinary problem solving, to understand cross-cultural and cross-boundary issues, and to be comfortable operating adaptively in an environment of increasing complexity and uncertainty.
Through the Conservation Leadership through Learning (CLTL) initiative, we are pioneering a new model for graduate education that will prepare the next generation of conservation leaders. CLTL merges transdisciplinary University education with real-world action to create on-the-ground benefits for conservation and communities. The result is a highly integrated learning experience developed by Colorado State University’s Warner College of Natural Resources and the School of Global Environmental Sustainability in partnership with El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR) in Mexico.

A COLLEGE has banned a Muslim woman from becoming a student - because she will not take off a veil hiding her face.
Shawana Bilqes, 18, was turned away after trying to enrol on a course.
Staff asked her to remove her burka - which covers everything but her eyes - for identity fraud purposes.
But she told them she could not because of her religious beliefs, and was forced to abandon plans to sign up for the Access course to Higher Education Diploma.
"I tried to compromise but they wouldn't" she says..... I wonder how exactly she tried to compromise, did she say she would reveal her nose?
In this day and age the burka is nothing more than shrouding a woman from the rest of the world and from fully interacting with other non muslim members of society, the burka makes her an object rather than a person, an object that you can't even look at, never mind touch.
Our faces and facial expressions are an integral part to interacting in everyday life, what do you think will happen to these women if France was to pass their law banning this garment from public places?
And most importantly, other athiests, christians, jews etc must show their faces for security reasons, why not a muslim, when the burka doesn't even feature in the koran?A COLLEGE has banned a Muslim woman from becoming a student - because she will not... more

Claude Alvin Simmons and Christopher Shun Scott are exonerated due to help of UT & UTA students!
"The case was originally brought to the attention of the district attorney's office Conviction Integrity Unit by students at the Texas Center for Actual Innocence at the University of Texas at Austin and the students at the University of Texas at Arlington's Innocence Network."
I'm beyond joyful to hear this news. But really, how many more exonerated men and women is it going to take before the government realizes that there is MAJOR fault in the system? Innocent people are being sent to die for heinous crimes they didn't commit.
