The TaoLive press covers the protest of the cutting of the Oak grove trees outside the UC Berkeley stadium. Tree sitters have resided in the grove for the last 9 months. A fence was erected last week for the "protection" of the sitters. Police will issue citations or arrests for any sitter leaving the trees.
This coverage was taken on September 1, 2007: The day when 70,000 fans arrived for the game between Tennessee and UCB. Many fans were hostile to the tree sitters but declined to be interviewed. The TaoLive press covers the protest of the cutting of the Oak grove trees outside the... more

This is a very interesting development and it will test our nation's laws, our values, and assumptions made about us. The Lakota Indians have announced that they have unilaterally withdrawn from all treaties with the United States, have renounced any US citizenship, and have formed a sovereign country within an area that covers part of 5 US States: Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.
Their new nations leader have gone to the Bolivian, Chilean, South African and Venezuelan embassies, and will continue on their diplomatic mission and take it overseas in the coming weeks and months, they told the news conference. They consider past treaties with the American Govt. merely "worthless words on worthless paper."
I personally applauded their strength and courage to stand up and say enough is enough, give us what's ours. It will be exciting to see how this plays out. This is a very interesting development and it will test our nation's laws, our... more

The Michigan Earth Keepers are protecting the environment with hands-on projects that prove one person can make a difference.
During 2007, the Earth Keepers:
Continued annual Earth Day clean sweeps that have removed 370 tons of hazardous waste from the environment aross a 400-mile area.
Held the the fourth planting of a wild rice restoration project that teams at-risk teens with American Indian guides teaching respect for nature and battling racism.
Sponsored an energy summit that convinced 500 businesses, churches/temples and homeowners to reduce power consumption.
Helped midwest musicians form the Boreal Chamber Symphony for a classical music concert that raised money for the Lake Superior Defense Fund.
The Earth Keepers include members and bishops/leaders of nine faith traditions with 140 participating churches/temples, American Indian tribes, several environment non-profits, university students, teenagers, a 20-member core team plus a 400 person volunteer army.
The Earth Keepers have been funded by grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans plus donations from the public.
The Earth Keepers have broken federal hazardous waste collection records for three years in a row and the EPA says the group is an example for others on how to form an effective coalition that accomplishes its goals.
Earth Keeper volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson looks back at 2007 and four years of environment protection.

The San Francisco Peaks are a unique mountain ecosystem which are managed as public lands in Northern Arizona. The Peaks are held Holy by more than 13 Indigenous Nations. A small ski area is threatening expansion and attempting to make fake snow from treated sewage effluent filled with harmful contaminants. A coalition of tribes and environmental groups have unified to prevent the environmental destruction, community health hazards and extreme desecration that would be caused by the proposed development. Although the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals blocked the ski area plan, the case will be reheard in Pasadena on December 11th, 2007.

For reasons that may never become clear I feel compelled to present this link.
Please discover that there is great diversity of culture, ideas and traditions within the Native American world, even as it exists in its subverted state.
I also submit the following quote that I find to be good food for thought as we approach a day of giving thanks for good in our lives.
"Once I was in Victoria, and I saw a very large house. They told me it was a bank, and that the white men place their money there to be taken care of, and that by and by they got it back, with interest. We are Indians, and we have no such bank; but when we have plenty of money or blankets, we give them away to other chiefs and people, and by and by they return them, with interest, and our hearts feel good. Our way of giving is our bank."

I am from Indianapolis Indiana. The city of Indians in the land of the Indians. At one time the population was rumored to be over 2,000,000 in the Ohio river valley with the bulk centered in the land that now is Indiana and Ohio. Many would be surprised to learn that there are still 40,000 Native Americans in Indiana and that there is also a growing populaiton of Indians of a diferent sort. East asian Indians and Sikhs in particular represent a growing percentage of the population and there are now over 10,000 in Indianapolis alone. The citys first public arts facility is earning our citys name by creating a celebration merging the two cultures for a true meeting of East and West. The exhibit will feature art from noted East Asian artists, cultural photography of both types of Indians, and Native American artifacts and regalia. The opening will feature Pow Wow dancers, Native American drumming and singing accompanied by world famous Bengali musician Badal Roy who is a Jazz/rock legend. Badal toured with bands like the Greatful Dead, played nine albums with Miles Davis, two with Ornette Coleman, One with Ritchie Havens, and also with Steve Gorn. Steve Gorn is a floutist and has played with Paul Simon, for this concert and his collaboration with Badal he is using his native east asian Bansuri flute. I am from Indianapolis Indiana. Centering prayer is a way to prepare your mind - to assist your body - in accomplishing goals - like fighting structural evil such as some corporations who care only about profit and not nature.
The goals of the non-profit Turtle island Project (TIP) include promoting respect for the environment and for Indigenous peoples - like the Celts, Native Americans and other Earth-based cultures.
Rev. Dr. George Cairns of Chesterton, Indiana explains what he learned from the founder of centering prayer - Father Thomas Keating.
A research professor of theology at the Chicago Theological Seminary, Dr. Cairns made his comments at the TIP first regional conference along the shores of Lake Superior in northern Michigan.
Dr. Cairns, who is the TIP co-founder and board president, is returning to Michigan's pristine Upper Peninsula on Fri., Nov. 9, 2007 to hold a free ecumenical retreat for clergy and others interested in interfaith prayer and creating social change.
Everyone is welcome at:
"Quest for Harmony: The Contemplation of Nature in the Christian Tradition promotes interfaith prayer and will examine Christian Celtic traditions" that will be held at Eden on the Bay Lutheran Church in Munising.

"Nike on Tuesday unveiled what it said is the first shoe designed specifically for American Indians, an effort aiming at promoting physical fitness in a population with high obesity rates.
The Beaverton-based company says the Air Native N7 is designed with a larger fit for the distinct foot shape of American Indians, and has a culturally specific look. It will be distributed solely to American Indians; tribal wellness programs and tribal schools nationwide will be able to purchase the shoe at wholesale price and then pass it along to individuals, often at no cost.""Nike on Tuesday unveiled what it said is the first shoe designed specifically... more

Chris Yazzie lives alone on a quiet stretch of land where he tends to his modest corn crop, planted with blue corn seeds from his Arizona reservation. He left his Navajo family at 19 to attend the only tribal college in California, D-Q University, formed in 1971 after young Natives occupied a parcel of land in Davis.Yazzie, now 25, has chosen to join that tradition of resistance. As the only student left at the troubled college, which closed abruptly in January 2005 after its accreditation was revoked, he is now the unofficial caretaker of its 643 acres, living in a single dorm room and relying on food donations and visits from the local Native community.
